Stephen Crockett is a really talented writer. This book shocked me, made me cry, and gave me hope. In the end it's a happily ever after story--but he does make you look at your own disappointments and how you choose to deal with them. Stephen, even though you may not realize it, its your tender heart and true humanity that led you to this place. Many harden their heart, make tons of money, have all the outward trappings and appearance of success, yet they are shells who chose to stick it to others to deal with their disappontments--you didnt lose your heart. Jesus loves you --let Him catch you. Thanks for sharing your story.
For those who like an inside view of someone's personal hell with addiction, this life story is it. Great companion to his black tar book. Very proud of the guy.
You see them on street corners, hiding in doorways, furtively watching, waiting for their next fix, selling drugs, or perhaps they have just had a shot. When you see drug addicts or alcoholics on the streets, or in the dark corners of bars, do you ever wonder why, and how, they became addicted? What made this person take that particular route through life, and at what stage couldn’t they say no?Perhaps you walk by pitying them, looking on with distain, smugly thinking that you will never be in their position, you would never become an alcoholic, or a drug addict. If you do, just stop and think. Who are you to judge? There is a very true saying “You cannot judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes.†As we go through our lives we make decisions, some very minor, or so we think at the time, however, everything we do comes with consequences. The face we put on to the world is not necessarily the person within, many of us hide behind masks. Sometimes this is done in the knowledge that we want to be deceptive, mislead, and bend a person to our will. However for many others it is a necessity, the only way to deal with the demons within, self-preservation.Stephen Crockett life changed at a very early age, when he could no longer endure being surrounded by religious fanaticism, made to attend church, and being beaten if he asked questions. It was in his 18th year however, just before graduation that his drug and alcohol abuse really took hold. Stephen had tried drink and marijuana before, however, whilst his fellow class mates were getting ready for the graduation photo, Stephen was sitting in the car park, passed out drunk. He missed his graduation ceremony because he was in hospital, recovering from asphyxia, and acute alcoholic poisoning.Missing that ceremony seems to be a turning point, in his own mind he became invisible, unworthy, from then on he began his quest to blending into the background, suffering tremendous feelings of disappointment in himself, and depression. His decision to leave the countryside for the town opened his eyes to a whole new world, and he became addicted to Heroin, the mother of all illegal drugs, which claims more lives than all the others put together. Stress and depression become his monsters in the closet, as trapped in his miserable existence he turns to drugs and alcohol. Soon he becomes part of the underground scene, dealing drugs, and living from fix to fix, in a drugs and alcohol induced haze. This book, and its companion ‘Black Tar’ has opened my eyes to a world I knew nothing about. Stephen has a very frank way of writing, and in his own unique no holds barred style, he talks openly about the addiction he has had for decades. What will the future hold for you if you go down the same route? Well, as Stephen so graphically explains, you will lose everything – no not just physical things, but yourself, self-worth, friends, and so much more.So what has become of Stephen now?Is he drugs free, and if so how did he do it?Find out by reading his compelling story - I guarantee you it will be an eye-opener!I downloaded this book using my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
This book bothered me. I read the author's book Black Tar first and it was an engaging story. But this book contradicts what the author wrote in Black Tar....he said he never had more than "just a girlfriend"....in Black Tar he was engaged. This book is not a diary...it is 100 pages of rambling and musing. The author uses the word "you" excessively when he means "me". He does not speak for all addicts. Also, the lack of grammar is very distracting from the writing. He does not know the difference between your and you're nor the difference between a plural and an '.
I've read all his books. The guy knows what he is talking about. Feel proud that he recovered. The best of his books is Black tar.
Gave good insight into the mind of an addict. Sad story.

Review
“Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. The stark photo by Paul Strand illustrating The Ugly Laws: Disability in Public conveys perfectly the realities and subtleties described in its pages—including the fear, pity, and revulsion with which the public so often regards those with physical disabilities.” -California Lawyer"This book is, as Schweik convincingly caharacterizes it, 'a history of the harm done by—let us allow the phrase some force—lack of regard.' It provides useful background for understanding current efforts to encode and enforce protections for the disabled and disadvantaged."-Marilyn Chandler McEntyre,The Christian Century“Shweik combines a sophisticated grasp of disability, critical race and social theory, extensive archival and legal research, close textual analysis, and broad reading in a wide range of historical and other literatures. Her account brings the insights of disability history and theory to bear on systems of exclusion, subordination, and othering more generally in American life as the United States entered the twentieth century... This is a powerful book, essential reading for scholars of disability, race, gender, sexuality, immigration, urban, legal, social movement, and twentieth-century history more generally—indeed, for anyone concerned about law and its power and the limits of that power to define borders of belonging.”-American Historical Review"The Ugly Laws is a focused and deeply mined interrogation of a familiar cultural figure—the unsightly beggar—that has not until now been critically examined. Schweik is a virtuosa of both close reading and the big picture, merging historical scholarship with analysis of the discursive elaboration and cultural work of the unsightly beggar figure. The Ugly Laws is an essential text." -Rosemarie Garland-Thomson,author of Extraordinary Bodies“Overall, this is a thorough, careful, and sensible work, which is both fascinating and also moving as an account of social oppression of disabled people.”-Metapsychology Online Reviews“What is ugliness, and how ugly is too ugly? Perverse though such discrimination might seem today, Schweik suggests that re-examining such laws ‘might prove very useful as a way of foregrounding the inevitable ambiguity of the category of ‘disability.’”-The Chronicle Review"The range of concerns illuminated by Schweik's materialist and historicist focus on the ordinances proves that The Ugly Laws has succeeded, as the book's poignant last words put it, in showing how much more we understand when we begin to face the history of disability'"-Jean Franzino,Register of the Kentucky Historical Society“In analyzing the ugly laws, Schweik reveals how individuals have come to define their identities around work and self-sufficiency, and how the failure of those with disabilities to do so can result in character assassination of these individuals as frauds and morally bankrupt, diseased tricksters and thieves. A subtle and complex study.” -Choice"Schweik uses ‘unsightly beggar’ laws in American cities in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to explore fundamental questions about disability, race, gender, and class in new and often startling ways. The book is beautifully written, delightfully thought-provoking, and deeply researched. It is quite honestly the best work of scholarship I have read in a long time." -Douglas C. Baynton, author of Forbidden Signs“Susan Schweik... has written a brilliant study of the ugly laws that illuminates this largely forgotten corner of the American history of body impairments, aesthetic norms, and urban spatial regulation. Schweik’s book serves, too, as a powerful demonstration of the vast potential of disability studies, like gender studies and queer theory with which it is frequently allied, to enlarge and to transform our understandings of what is frequently taken for granted as natural, to shed new light on the subterranean recesses of culture, and not simply to assist us to think “outside the box,” but to question whether there needs to be a box at all... The riotous encounters she analyzes, with their mixture of menace, chaos, conflicting cultures, and colorful characters, paint fascinating, Dickensian word pictures that bring to life the illusive, urban crowd and its antagonists in compelling and analytically pointed ways.”-Journal of Social History

The Ugly Laws is a very thorough and interesting historical account of how the disabled were treated and mistreated in America's past. It does have its shortcomings, however. For one thing, it is very verbose and repetitive. It also delves too deeply into side issues such as language semantics and characters in fiction literature. It would have been much better if it had more stories of real people affected by the ugly laws, such as Arthur Franklin Fuller. Still, in spite of its problems, The Ugly Laws captured my attention and kept it for the duration of my reading of it.
This book was one that scared me. Being a victim of polio I could easily have been put away.
This book has two faces. On the one hand, it reflects an enormous amount of original research, locating obscure local ordinances from around the country and relying on important archival sources. Kudos to the author for not merely resting on the research of others. I am keeping this book on my shelf as a reference. But the book is almost impossible to read cover to cover. Instead of just starting with a theoretical framework and using that theory (or theories) to describe the results of the research, the theory overwhelms almost every chapter. And the author seems to continually shift perspectives -- trying in the same page (and sometimes the same paragraph) to describe the enactment and enforcement of the laws as a historical events, critically examine the motives of the actor under various perspectives, and also explain how the incidents were used and understood in the modern disability-rights movement. While each point is important, mushing them together makes it hard to understand anything.
This is utterly appalling that people were treated so inhumanely due to have disabilities! I'm amazed at how humanity can be towards others that are different from themselves and then to pass laws against innocent persons is unbelievable. My rating does not reflect the author. It's like watching the news and being turned off by all the crime being reported. I would suggest this book to others. I'm keeping it in my library.
Ugly Laws is an important contribution to disability studies. It is carefully researched, well written and explores and generates important ideas. It is a model of the type of scholarship that will advance this exciting relatively new field.
All I can say is buy it! You won't be disappointed only intrigued. Shipped fast and packaged nicely! A Must Read!
Fascinating and important read!
In "The Ugly Laws: Disability in Public", Susan Schweik writes, “My aim here is threefold: first, to provide a fuller account of the story of unsightly subjects than has yet been written; second, to rethink aspects of U.S. culture through the insights of disability theory (and in turn to rethink aspects of disability studies through an encounter with the history of the American ugly); and finally, to illuminate the conditions of disability – and municipal law’s constitution of those conditions – in the late nineteenth century and at the century’s turn, so as to better understand law, culture, and disability in the present†(pg. 2). Schweik believes that “it was probably more the norm than the exception for this law to show up on the code books of American cities sometime in the late nineteenth or very early twentieth century†(pg. 3). Those who implemented the law did so in a manner suggesting that disability was the problem of individuals, rather than something requiring a reworking of “broader social inequalities†(pg. 5). In her work, Schweik draws upon the ugly law terminology coined by Marcia Pearce Burgdorf and Robert Burgdorf Jr. (pg. 7). Others historians, such as Rosemarie Garland Thomson in her "Extraordinary Bodies", examined the law in a passing manner, but Schweik forefronts it, focusing specifically on Chicago’s 1911 law, which has taken on mythic status in disability studies. In her focus, Schweik chooses “to embrace a model of disability, broadly construed, as a political process. Hence, [she focuses] on a particular form of political behavior, a blatantly conventionally political moment, the passing and implementation of a law, in order to understand that political event in the context of modern disability formation†(pg. 11).Schweik writes of the intersectionality of her model, “Gender, race, sexuality, religion, and national identity are inexorably intertwined with disability and class in the culture(s) of ugly law, producing a variety of ugly identities, both at each specific moment of ordinance enforcement…and in the broader social order that framed, ignored, fought over, and accepted the state and city codes†(pg. 141). The laws’ most flagrant violation of due process involved the interpretation of female beauty. The laws examined women’s “lack of attraction and beauty,†as well as “leanness and stoutness, shortness and tallness,†if they were awkward, the condition of their hair, the size of their breasts, and whether or not they dressed pleasantly (pg. 145). In attempting to limit the mobility of women, the laws created categories for which any women could face arrest. Schweik continues, “Cities across the country…embedded the ugly law specifically within a matrix of codes concerning local purity: decency and exhibition, gender and sexuality…These patterns of codification make clear that the ugly law was intrinsically tied to laws of sex and gender†(pg. 144). While male vagrancy and “ugliness†usually involved missing limbs or severe injury, many laws defined female ugliness in terms of variance from idealized female beauty, equating the display of these differences with prostitution and other women whom society viewed as out of their place (pg. 145). These laws, which defined any physical or sexual aberrance as criminal, reinforced notions of white male superiority.

Andrew John Shaw in Jade Life successfully has accomplished at what many English language scholars failed when writing about Chinese jade. Andrew has interjected himself as an envoy between east and west in the universe of jade. No author before him has so poignantly placed the reader into the cacophonous jade marts and into the alleyways where diligent jade carvers eke out livings in minimalistic shops. Also bared to the reader is Andrew’s own avid passion acquired late in life in which he becomes an accomplished jade carver in his own right as well as an eminent figure of the jade universe in both the east and the west.

From Mary Gordon's Introduction to Howards End Howards End is a novel for the likes of us. That is to say, for you and me: you because you have bought this particular book, and I because I am writing about it, and because I love it. You may be buying the book for a variety of reasons; you may be in a train station or an airport or browsing in a bookshop on a rainy day, hoping for many things: enlightenment, friendship, amorous adventure, cappuccino. You may want to chip away at that mountain of the canon you have not read. You may be buying it because you must, because you have been told by a teacher that Howards End is something you must read in order to pass a course. But however disparate all our motives are, whether our relationship to the book is, like mine, that of a loving old friend, or perhaps as yours may be, as a fearful or hopeful or wary stranger, Forster makes us a "we" with the novel's very first sentence: "One may as well begin with Helen's letters to her sister." We are part of a company; it is a formal one to be sure-the impersonal pronoun "one" is used, but the "we" is implied, because we are being shown something intimate, domestic-Helen's letters to her sister. We don't know Helen's last name, or anything about her, but we are immediately included in her private life. Yet the first sentence of her letter to Meg might serve as a warning to readers who are about to become one of the Howards End "we": "'It isn't going to be what we expected.'" Edward Morgan Forster lived a life devoted to the ideas of decency, humaneness, the civilized private life in which the disparities of the human condition might be resolved by honesty and goodwill. At the same time, he was aware of the dark goblins that Helen, and Beethoven, found in the symphony that forms a meditation in the beginning of Howards End. Tragedy struck Forster's life early; his father died in l881, when he was only two; he was brought up by a mother and aunts, lived quietly with them until he was exiled to public school, a nightmare for him. Rescued by the University of Cambridge, he was taken up by a brilliant group of young men (among whom he was considered one of the least brilliant) who gathered around the philosopher G. E. Moore. Moore's ideas stressed the primacy of personal relations and the appreciation of beauty in a good life. The members of this group included Lytton Strachey, John Maynard Keynes, and a Liverpool Jew named Leonard Woolf who would marry Virginia, sister of another member, Toby Stephen. He studied the classics; traveled, particularly to Italy; sought minor employment. Between 1903 and 1910 he wrote four novels: A Room with a View, The Longest Journey, Where Angels Fear to Tread, and Howards End. He finished a novel about homosexuality, Maurice, in 1913, but did not publish it in his lifetime. There was, therefore, a publication lapse of fourteen years, and then in 1924 A Passage to India. And then no novels for the rest of his long life. He was made a member of King's College, Cambridge, and died there in 1970. How to explain the early prodigiousness, followed by the long silence. Is it that the world he knew was erased by the trauma of World War I? Virginia Woolf assures us in her essay "Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown" that in December 1910, human nature changed. Did the change paralyze him? Or was it that he felt silenced by his inability to write honestly about homosexual life? Howards End was published just before Virginia Woolf's December 1910 sell-by date, so perhaps the assurance of the voice is the assurance of the full maturity of a way of life that knows itself about to be obsolete.

A Room with a View is a great novel that offers insight into society during the early twentieth century. From the beginning of the book, Lucy Honeychurch, the protagonist, is torn between what is socially acceptable. This is illustrated by the love triangle between Lucy, George (her true love), and Cecil (her fiancé). George is of a lower class than her, and yet, he is the one she truly loves. Cecil is her pretentious, upper class fiancé who would rather protect her than be her equal. Will she choose George, whom is of a lower social class than her, or Cecil, the socially acceptable wierdo? The themes of love and social status are forever present in the novel. The book is made even more enjoyable by the dry humor employed by E.M. Forster. He is so serious and sarcastic whenever he makes jokes, it makes the book all the better. I found myself loving the book mainly because of how relatable Lucy is. She is a young women trying to find herself in the midst of social pressures. Overall, I thought the book was amazing and would definitely recommend it.
Good grief, this has been my second and possibly third reading of this work (This is over quite a number of years and my long term memory is beginning to fail me...sigh), and I must say that I enjoyed it as much this go-around as I did the first. There is something about this work that simply appeals to me.Now this is not to say that it will be on every readers most favored list - no, far from it, and this is how it should be. For me thought it is an excellent read and if I last longer I will most likely read it again on down the road. This is one of those tales that touches on a wide range of the general overall human condition. It should also ne noted here that the time element covered by this novel is 1908 which is pre WWI and it IS NOT taking place during the `Victorian era' of which several reviewers have stated. No, we are talking the Edwardian era in England and while some of the morals and morays of Victorian times still linger, it is never the less a different age completely. This must be understood to understand the story.Anyway, back to the subjects covered in this work: Love, prejudices, betrayal, strong but understated humor, a snapshot of a previous era, sociological observation of the English upper middle class and of course the clashes of culture; of the rather painful differences between the perceived social classes in England at that time. It also investigates the dilemma of `self' v/s the expectations of society and family. All in all, if you look at it a certain way, not much has changed over the years and the issues addressed in this classical work are still strongly among us even to this day. It takes a long, long time for attitudes in society to fade. I know in my own case that I was raised very closely to grandparents who were as about as Edwardian as you can get and there is no doubt that their influence had a great deal in molding my personality and attitudes...for better or for worse. (Hey, I am old and yes, I can remember people of that generation quite well). We have a young lady; a young lady with brains, even though she does not realize it at the time, who is motivated and pulled apart by her true feelings and those feelings that she is either suppose to have or not suppose to have in a number of situations.Yes, the author has used a number of what we could consider stereotypes of the time but he has used them to good effect and used them to tell his story quite well. While this may bother some folks, I found it to make the overall story more understandable and easier to `go down.'This work starts in Italy and drifts back to England and again, to understand the story, you have to have some understanding of the cultural gap between England and the continent in those days. Good or bad, it was what it was.Few will deny that this is a well written work...it may not be to every ones taste, as I have stated, but good is good by most standards. I can get quite lost in the author's narrative prose and descriptive writing.I was delighted to see that this work is now free via your reading machines...it was about time.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks
This is one of my favorite books. I read it right after watching the movie. I love both. I am a fan of E.M. Forster. This was my 1st, but I have since read most of what he has written. I would say he is one of my all time favorite writers, up there with Jane Austen, and J.K. Rowling. I tend to like either Romance or fantasy/Sci fi. E.M. Forster delivers on Romance. It is true, his books may move a bit slow for some. I prefer it. I feel like I get to know the characters in a more personal way, when I see more of their day to day in the pages. This one moves faster than his others, and is the most cheerful of all his books. The characters are written so well. Lucy is our slightly bratty main character. The mother and the brother are sweet. I love Mr Beebe: the very liberal vicar. I love George and his father. Both are romantic, manly characters. Cecil is clueless but still entertaining and lovable. I love the mischievous romance novelist. I love the Miss Alans, who I am probably most like, in the story,("tiresome... with all of their iffing and butting.") I especially love that you are still able to love all of the characters despite quite obvious flaws. None of them are one dimensional characters. They all have their bright points and redeeming characteristics. Just thinking about this book makes me smile. SPOILER: My favorite line:....................................................................................................... "It is Fate, but you can call it Italy if it pleases you Vicar."
This is another absolute gem from Forster; writing, characters and story extremely good. His common themes of class and love and a changing England get a new layer of scandal and modernity that was simultaneously surprising and absolutely natural. He was able to write in the house as a character in such a way as I was transported and didn't want to leave in a hurry. Beautiful.

This is such a special book. It presents a Biblical principal in a wonderfully fun and understandable way for young children. Francis Chan has demonstrated a unique ability to present challenging information in a comprehensive fashion for adults in his nonfiction books and he does the same for children with this book, as well as The Little Red Tractor, and Ronnie Wilson's Gift.
A readable and entertaining story with a strong message... for parents too! I don’t want my kids to live halfway, and I know I need the Holy Spirit to help me love God with my whole heart. I recommend this book for younger kiddos, but read aloud for the whole family, even grandparents can benefit from the reminder to love God with our whole hearts! Thanks Francis Chan, your family is an amazing example of what that looks like practically. I have enjoyed your books and teachings for years, and now I will enjoy sharing that with my kids too!
Basic. Accurate.Basic. Challenging.Creative. Convicting.Practical. Applicable. If recommend adultsReading this a few times before trying to pass it off as entertainment for children.
Beautiful, colorful, clean illustrations. Simple wording, easy for my toddler to follow & understand. Great way for kids (and big kids!) to metaphorically understand being whole-hearted vs. halfway. We often use the idea of being "Halfway Herbert" w/ my toddler, to which he responds, "No, I don't wanna be..." Love Francis Chan! Also have "Big Red Tractor" - great book too!
Cute story! My kids loved it and understood the moral of the story.
excellent book to read your children, the basis of the word of God... Can't get much better than that
Great book to help children understand Holy Spirit helps us live full lives for Christ in ALL things that we do! LOVE this!
in teaching their kids to do likewise . I would also like to recommend reading the book Crazy Love, one of my favorites.

This book has offered me a deeper understanding about chakras. And I was very fortunate that I found this book. This deeper understanding about chakras has led me to believe that there is really an invisible energy which flows through our body or physical system and is connected to the universe. In eastern concept, this energy points in our bodies are called chakras. I am very delighted how the author tries to explain these chakras in the light of a western point of view. Afterall, these are practically the same concepts which just differ in terminology. Healing our mind and body comes in if we are able to focus our attention to these chakras when they are not balanced. Furthermore, exercises and methods in this kind of healing are also found in this book.
Today, we are living in a fast-paced environment and because of that we are always prone to stress and other things that affect and trigger us to irritations which leads us to be unhappy. I heard about chakras from a friend of mine and its concept and so that leads me to reading this book because I got interested. And through this book, I learned how chakras can help us attract positive energy which help us feel better and focus. And I learned the different chakras and their importance to our body that we use in our daily life. This book is full of helpful information’s and advices.
Our modern-day, cutting-edge world has also brought with it some of the most ‘dernier-cri’ and ‘hard nut to crack’ problems, among which killer diseases, some of which have no cure. Apart from these, humans go around with their own load of other problems––financial, health related, emotional, or relationship troubles. Worries form part of our daily life. You will find that there is, in fact, a miraculous solution to all your problems. The secret is Chakra Healing.Good read for those who want to probe deep into the human Chakras.
I enjoyed this book. It was interesting to find out how our bodies work in regards to chakras. This books foundation was really good. It entails understanding chakras. Different types of chakras and even how they work are explained. There is also statements showing how they work with certain parts of our bodies. They also control parts as well.I was particularly intrigued by ‘ Throat Chakras’. This is being able to express ourselves as an important part of leading a happy life. This is good for like writers, actors, artists and poets. Chakras teaches living creatively and promotes inexpensive techniques for meditation.
For those who believe on internal energy called chakra, this book is a good one to learn about it. This book teaches us about chakra and how can it be used in our lives. Get ready to explore the inner world of chakras and discover the different types energies in our body. The author took a practical approach to explaining this theory allowing me to understand the concept from a personal point of view. Gives some advice on meditation. It also includes a quiz which can help assess your chakras. I recommend this book if you are interested in this subject.
The concept of Chakras were only fantasy for me until Read this book. LOL. Bought this book in curiosity, but really gave me a vast knowledge of spiritual part of our body. Our body is a self-mechanism. No need of external elements for anything except food and water. It can heal itself, Strengthen human abilities to a limit which is amazing. The book discuss about every chakras and its functions. It is not vast description, but good.I am attracted to chakras. Looking for vast book to go through it.
