About the Author

Steve Mariotti, founder of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), is considered one of today’s leading experts in education for at-risk youth.  In 1982, he changed career paths when he decided to leave the corporate sector and become a special education teacher in the New York City public school system.   Mariotti’s first assignment was in the East New York section of Brooklyn, and his last was in the Fort Apache section of the South Bronx. During his six-and-a-half years teaching, Mariotti discovered he could successfully motivate even his most challenging students by teaching them how to run a business. This experience inspired him to create a new kind of program--the first to bring entrepreneurial education to low-income youth.   In 1987, Mariotti founded The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). Today, NFTE’s mission is to provide entrepreneurship education programs to young people from low-income communities around the world.  NFTE’s programs have a proven track record of success, and the network is widely viewed as the thought leader in the field. NFTE is an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In 2013, Mariotti traveled to Southeast Asia as a guest of the U.S. State Department on a mission to spread entrepreneurial education to youth from emerging economies in the region.   Mariotti was recently nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his work chronicling the lives of entrepreneurs worldwide for The Huffington Post and for a Nobel Peace Prize for his pioneering work in entrepreneurial education. A lifelong advocate for low-income students, Mariotti is the recipient of numerous awards including:   Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award Bernard A. He started his professional career as a treasury analyst for Ford Motor Company before founding his own company, Mason Import/Export Services.   Caroline Glackin, Ph.D., is a “pracademic” who has successfully worked as a microenterprise and small business owner and manager, as an executive director of a community development financial institution, and as an academic in areas of community development finance, entrepreneurship, and management. She is Entrepreneurship Faculty at the University of North Carolina - Fayetteville State University. She has been assisting entrepreneurs in achieving their dreams for over 30 years.   Glackin earned a doctorate from the University of Delaware, where her research emphasis was on microfinance. She received an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College. Her professional career began with the DuPont Company, American Bell, Bell Atlantic, and American Management Systems. She has consulted for businesses and not-for-profit agencies in turnaround and high-growth situations. After exiting a family business, she became the executive director of a community development financial institution serving businesses and not-for-profits.   Dr. Glackin has succeeded in leading change in the practical fields of her research and has received numerous honors and awards. The only reason why I purchased this book was for a class in college. I was grateful that I did buy this book because there is a lot of useful information in it regarding entrepreneurship, whether it be starting out or during the cycles/stages.

Great college course book, which is what I HAD to order it for. Used it through out and it's very detailed and helpful

This was a very costly book but so comprehensive that if you followed it you would "Succeed in Business Without Even Trying". It is expensive, but a tremendous teaching tool and a awesome tool if you are even remotely interested in entrepreneurship of any kind. It is geared for pre-teens and teens which makes it all the better for those of us who like to think we are teens but pretty much into our years. It is a textbook, not a fast read. But very useful.

It's a cool book but doesn't have much information

Needed this book for a class. I would not recommend for anyone else but it did what was necessary to pass the course.

I took an Entrepreneurship class in college a few years ago and we had to use this book. Reading this book was very interesting and helpful, more so than the class itself. I definatly knew I had to have this book, but I had rented it for class. When i saw what they were trying to charge for me to keep it I said, no way sadly. I then came to Amazon to purchase the book-what I should have done in the first place! Perfect book for those wanting to start a business. Very clear, straight to the point, and easy to read.Reading other reviews about a CD. When I had the book in college, it did not come with a CD, nor did the one I purchased on Amazon. Maybe a future edition will have a CD, but the seller here has not specified a CD. They tell you everything step by step in the book, so you really don't need a CD.

Very informal information. If you are interested in being an Entrepreneur this book is for you. It will give you the language that you need to speak to future business partners.

I have loved this series from the start and this latest addition was no exception! Lily Harper Hart always delivers with a cozy mystery full of fun and quirky characters, plots that will keep you guessing up to the end, and enough romance to satisfy all those who love a happy ending! I always enjoy how this author carries larger plots throughout her series while keeping each book to a small mystery that wraps up in the end. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a touch of magic or the paranormal, I highly recommend this author!

I like Ivy , Jack , Brian , Max , Felicity , Mom and Dad. I like that Ivy can work with Jack and Brian to solve mysteries together.

I love these characters! They are not only fun, and the mystery keeps you guessing until the end, but the characters are so well-rounded and developed, I just enjoy reading about their lives. I wish I could live there with them. Of course, I wouldn't mind living in any of the books this author writes. Yes, there is always a murder mystery, so bad for that character, but there is so much love and fun between her main characters, it is nice to be able to escape there for a while. It always makes my day a little brighter, and this latest Ivy Morgan mystery is no exception.

I love these characters. But cmon! The constant no I love you more, reassurances, etc. it’s a theme through many of the different seriesAfter a certain point, it’s time to grow up and trust the love. Please make it time!Spoiler!Having Ivy pretend to be in the show was ridiculous. Yeah yeah, all part of the plot to uncover the killer. Just doesn’t play out.

The Ivy Morgan Series is one of my favorites. They are always new ways to get caught up in a mystery and this was no exception. As Ivy’s powers evolve, we see bigger challenges for he and Jack and the rest of the family. Some people should never have children and this stories is a good example. The lust for more money corrupts the soul if you are not careful.

Another great story featuring Ivy and Jack. A ridiculous t.v. show concept comes to town and the star of the show winds up dead. Ivy and Jack have to try and solve the mystery and get the producer off Ivy's back before another body drops dead! Join the snarky fun as Ivy thwarts the producer's goals and confronts a killer.

This series is exactly what I look for in a cozy mystery. I like my books to have some meat to them but still be PG. I love sarcasm and humor, which there is plenty of and I really love smart, intelligent characters, of which all are. Another great book in a fantastic series!

Well, I totally bombed on this one. Figureed I had the bad guy all figured out. But no. Not even close. Of course that made it an even better mystery. And that doesn't even include the surprise ending. Brace yourself!

What cannot be overemphasized is the sheer scope of the collection, which follows these women from idealistic young adulthood to contentedly disillusioned middle age and, for some, parenthood. All eventually end up a little more haggard than they began, but there isnt one whose Bechdel-illustrated bags under her eyes were not hard fought for and hard won. (Nov.) Like its only possible peer among current comic strips, Lynn Johnston’s For Better or Worse, and its great forebear, Frank King’s GasolineAlley, Dykes plays out in real time. Characters age, change, see their parents die, and have children. Basically, everything revolves around erstwhile radical lesbian Mo, whose worries for the future persist as she and her friends realize their dreams. Life does get better for gay people, though struggles continue, as the determined-to-be-transgender preteen son of a newer cast member and the dissolution of two long-lived lesbian marriages remind them and us. Mo’s kvetching centrality is complemented by the chorus of skewed radio and TV commentary and headlines that strikingly often intones a satirical leitmotiv under the characters’ conversation, which is always pitch-perfect for the highly intelligent, well-educated, earnestly committed, and witty bunch they are. Bechdel’s comics autobiography Fun Home (2006) has brought her much greater general attention than Dykes ever did, but make no mistake—the strip is her masterpiece. --Ray Olson

I’ve spent many hours enjoying this wonderful compilation of Alison Bechdel’s “Dykes to Watch Out For” cartoon series. Drawn between 1987 and 2008, the “Dykes” strip focuses on the misadventures and foibles of a group of close-knit LGBT friends as they pursue education, work and love affairs while debating personal politics and political correctness.The strip is funny but also thoughtful in tone. It’s unique in that it features multi-sexual, multi-racial, multi-ethnic characters and continually comments on the culture and politics of the times: lesbian and gay rights, the AIDS epidemic, the wars in Iraq, 9/11, celebrity culture, transgenderism, the financial crisis, etc. The characters attend many an anti-war protest, Pride parade and women’s music festival. They debate and spoof the latest twists in gender theory. The feminist bookstore owner Jezanna rails against “Bunns & Noodle” stealing her business.The protagonist, Mo, is forever analyzing and second-guessing herself (like a lesbian Woody Allen). Her pal Lois is sexually omnivorous and proud of it. Other characters include Harriet, Sparrow, Ginger, Malika, Clarice and Toni and their kid Raffi. They are a lovable, oddball “Our Gang” whose friendships, arguments, love for and exasperation with each other blend into an astute, layered saga of a modern family, with all its warmth and complications. I read this toon when it first ran in alternative newspapers back in the 1990s. Reading it again still made me laugh and think. This would be a great gift for an LGBT or feminist friend.

I began reading Bechdel's strip in college during the George W. Bush presidency. It was a welcome dose of sanity in a world that felt increasingly bizarre and insane. The genius of the strip is that it was fully political but also went beyond it. Bechdel created a whole world in miniature, characters who cared about each other while living their lives side-by-side. The style of lovingly detailed pictures paired with immaculately phrased text that would become familiar to the world through Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic and Are You My Mother?: A Comic Drama was pioneered here, in twenty-seven years of strips.This "essential" collection doesn't include every strip, but it is close enough to get the full sweep of the story. It also doesn't include the bonus materials found in many of the smaller collections. My hope is that someday we will get a complete DTWOF collection - Bechdel's work is certainly important enough to warrant that treatment. Until that day, this high-quality volume is the best way to experience one of the greatest serial comics of all time.

Absolutely the best book by Alson Bechdel. I grew up reading these comics and they helped me come out of the closet with laughter and respect. I bought this book for my step-daughter for her college graduation. I hope she enjoys them as much as I do. I absolutely love these comics and I feel like she can love them too. Although our issues as lesbians are not the same they are in the same realm as they were back then and I am proud to give them to my daughter to read and love as much as I have.

A compelling read, and as another reviewer had said, one doesn't need to be a lesbian to totally appreciate and enjoy this book. I'm an avid reader of graphic memoirs, and in my opinion, Alison Bechdel and Joe Sacco rank head and shoulders above the rest in terms of their writing style, content, keen observation, wit/humor and highly detailed drawings. Almost every frame is a work of art. Extremely, extremely gifted. I'm disappointed that there aren't any more new materials from Ms Bechdel for me to indulge in, for now, and hope I don't have to wait too long for her next release!

As a general review of "Dykes To Watch Out For," it is a wonderful, human series. Much as, in her introduction, Ms. Bechdel critiques the idea of herself becoming an entry point into the culture, she is, but she also presents an amazing, evolving story, that gives the reader a real glimpse into human life and poses questions that the characters model asking themselves that, really, most of us should ask ourselves, at at least one point or another. All this comes along with effective, real-life style humor. Frankly, I think everybody should read her work.

Whether you've been anxiously awaiting the next installment after Invasion of the Dykes to Watch Out For, or have lost track of our favorite lesbian heriones and want to get caught up, this is the book for you.Hardcore fans will be delighted to see that we have an entire new book's worth of fresh, unpublished comics to get us up to date. I looked at how many comics each of the previous books has had, and we have an equal amount of new content in this one. But, for only a little bit extra, you get this thick, glorious retrospective which takes us through the entire series, giving us clips and the best highlights from over the years.If you missed the last couple books - no worries - this will catch you up enough to enjoy the latest comics at the end. And if you've read everything and just want the latest book - you won't be disappointed with everything else included. I've read every book multiple times, and I enjoyed reading the entire thing as a lead-up to the new comics at the end.Bechdel is my number one favorite cartoonist ever, and I'm not even a lesbian - I just find her characters are so human and so interesting that I connect with their lives deeply.So if you read Fun House and aren't sure if you might like to move on to this series, I'd encourage you to pick up this book and give it a try.

Such an amazing book. I don't usually write reviews, but Bechdel deserves to be recognized for this collection. Smart & funny. Impossible to put down. Crazy to see how relevant most of the issues portrayed here still are today. Wish I could be part of a lesbian crew as legendary and awesome as this one.Although I am saddened by the absence of some strips, I understand that it would have been impossible for all of them to make it on to the final product.Either way, I love this book. It's timeless and hilarious.
