Have had the previous edition for many years and it is the mainstay of safe practice used in my labs for many years. The new edition does not disappoint and now resides alongside it older sibling on my workplace bookshelf. I recommend this to any person working in a laboratory environment using hazardous materials.

There is a spot for a CD in the back of the book. The CD was missing.

An excellent update to an already solid text. A necessary reference. Highly recommend to anyone in chemical and laboratory safety.

Very useful book, thank you.

One of the most boring texts I have ever read

This book is about safety in labs and it is distributed for free. It's a great book. Search online for it.

Review

A Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Selection"The Far Away Brothers is impeccably timed, intimately reported and beautifully expressed. Markham brings people and places to rumbling life; she has that rare ability to recreate elusive, subjective experiences—whether they’re scenes she never witnessed or her characters’ interior psychological states—without taking undue liberties. In many ways, her book is reminiscent of Adrian Nicole LeBlanc’s Random Family. It’s about teenagers who raise themselves."—Jennifer Senior, The New York Times“[This] beautifully written book…can be read as a supplement to the current news, a chronicle of the problems that Central Americans are fleeing and the horrors they suffer in flight. But it transcends the crisis. Markham’s deep, frank reporting is also useful in thinking ahead to the challenges of assimilation, for the struggling twins and many others like them…Her reporting is intimate and detailed, and her tone is a special pleasure. Trustworthy, calm, decent, it offers refuge from a world consumed by Twitter screeds and cable news demagogues. The Far Away Brothers is a generous book for an ungenerous age.” —Jason DeParle, The New York Review of Books"You should read The Far Away Brothers. We all should." —NPR“This is the sort of news that is the opposite of fake…Markham is our knowing, compassionate ally, our guide in sorting out, up close, how our new national immigration policy is playing out from a human perspective...An important book.”—The Minneapolis Star Tribune"An indelible picture...of one imperfect family driven apart and astray—not by inequality or lax enforcement, but by the humanitarian crisis of gang warfare."—Vulture“Painstakingly reported…A compassionate look at the lives of two young men and the family they left behind when they were seventeen years old…[This] book could not have come at a more relevant time.” —Mother Jones"Markham recreates each step of the story in rich detail...Powerful." —Pacific Standard"Deserves a place alongside the strongest in the genre....By the book’s end, it’s impossible to not be rooting for [the Flores brothers]. The book’s true victory, however, is in its insights into how the gang crisis in El Salvador and neighboring countries is impacting individual lives—and what lengths these individuals will go to, in chillingly descriptive detail, to persevere." —PopMatters"Lauren Markham understands the complexities of immigration to the United States...Compelling." —Sojourner"Excellent...a clear-eyed look at what many [immigrants] actually experience." —The Mercury News"Markham functions as an empathetic intermediary amid ordinary and extraordinary struggles. She is implicated in the boys’ search for a livable life, but her closeness to the situation does not impede her analysis....The Far Away Brothers...tell[s] a story of courage and failure, tenacity and loss, loyalty and fumbling steps into an unknown future." —The Christian Century“Timely and thought-provoking…Markham provides a sensitive and eye-opening take on what’s at stake for young immigrants with nowhere else to go.”—Publishers Weekly“Powerful…Focusing primarily on one family's struggle to survive in violence-riddled El Salvador by sending some of its members illegally to the U.S.,...[this] compellingly intimate narrative…keenly examines the plights of juveniles sent to America without adult supervision….One of the most searing books on illegal immigration since Sonia Nazario's Enrique's Journey.” —Kirkus [starred review]“A stark examination of youth migration and the extreme risks taken to access a better life....Markham questions the accessibility of the American dream while compassionately narrating Raúl and Ernesto’s experiences.” —Booklist"An affecting and personal look into the experiences of minor migrants." —Library Journal"This brilliantly reported book goes so deeply into the lives of its protagonists and is so beautifully, movingly written it has some of the pleasures of a novel—but all the force of bitter truth, the truth about the lives of unaccompanied minors in the USA, about poverty, the ricocheting wars here and there, and the caprices and brutalities of immigration policy. Anyone who wants to understand more deeply how we got here and why we need to keep going until we get someplace better should dive into this book." —Rebecca Solnit, author of The Mother of All Questions"Beautifully written, The Far Away Brothers examines the claustrophobic space between grinding poverty and brutal gang violence that drives so many children from El Salvador to make the dangerous journey North. Lauren Markham applies the eye of an artist to the dogged reporting of an investigative journalist. What a fine and timely book!" —Ted Koppel, author of Lights Out“In the midst of a contentious debate in which reality is too often bent or ruptured entirely, The Far Away Brothers is a necessary book. But it is so much more than just that. Told with elegant detail, profound compassion, and painful truth, you will come out of this story with so much knowledge and, more importantly, understanding—of immigrants and also of youth. Lauren Markham has written this book in a hard and noble way, depicting the Flores brothers not only as representatives of a vital issue, but as human beings: complicated, special, humorous, and flawed. You need to meet these young men.” —Jeff Hobbs, author of The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace"A twenty-first century odyssey, The Far Away Brothers will take readers to unimaginable places, mapped and unmapped, in heart and mind as well as on the earth’s surface. This is one of the finest accounts ever written of the plight of unaccompanied migrant children, full of insight and empathy, and as gripping a tale as one might hope to find in a masterful suspense novel. By making the Flores twins come alive, Lauren Markham puts flesh and bone on one of the most shadowy yet most pressing crises of our day and age." —Carlos Eire, author of Waiting for Snow in Havana and Learning to Die in Miami"Lauren Markham has written a modern day epic with The Far Away Brothers. It is a wonderfully unfolding, intimate portrait of family and the dangers people are still willing to risk for a simple chance at a better life. Markham's writing reads like the best of fiction out there, and yet... remember, this happened to real people. This is the sort of book you'll be thinking about at night." —Domingo Martinez, author of The Boy Kings of Texas“The most moving revelation of this book comes not from the geo-political lessons we learn, the path of the brothers through the desert, or the obstacles they face in U.S. courts—rather, it’s the insight into how that journey affects them, plaguing them with anxiety and guilt but also inspiring hope, ambition, and responsibility. From a lesser writer this would be a simple migration story, but thanks to Markham’s relentless reporting and care, it becomes a deeply relatable tale of human transformation—messy, stumbling, and bursting with optimism.”—Laura Tillman, author of The Long Shadow of Small Ghosts"Once you've read this remarkable reporting, 'immigration' will never be an abstract or airless debate for you again. It's hard to imagine a more timely or more valuable volume." —Bill McKibben, author of Radio Free Vermont

This offers excellent and accurate insight into why people immigrate from Central America, what it takes to make it to the US, and what life is like once here. By using the true story of twin brothers, the author conveys the human realities of undocumented immigration. At the same time, she portrays the twins very honestly, not as saints but as young people who are stronger than most in many ways, but with flaws and immaturities that are common in most young people. They may take different expressions than they would in American born youth because of different and very difficult circumstances. But as I read this book, I became less judgmental about their behaviors and choices. These were kids taking on more than I have ever had to take on.I used the word thorough in my title. The author uses data and facts very well to portray who immigrants are and to explain immigration laws, agencies, and processes. I am somewhat knowledgeable about those topics, and I was impressed. I am going to recommend the book to friends who want to learn more about the technical as well as the human aspects of immigration. She was fair and balanced in her treatment of this topic. The book is well written. It’s is a good story that could make a good movie or series. A good read that is a learning experience as well.

Markham's book seamlessly weaves together the story of one family while telling a much broader story about illegal immigration from Central America. I found myself immersed in the characters and story and had to remind myself multiple times that I was reading non-fiction. While heart-wrenching, it's also enjoyable and educational. Highly recommend!

For those of us who live in comfortable surroundings in well-ordered towns such as Berkeley, the day-to-day realities of life as experienced by undocumented migrants may be impossible to understand. Most of what we know comes from news reports and occasional exposés about the efforts of the Trump Administration to expel what Right-Wing politicians have insisted we call "illegal immigrants." In The Far Away Brothers, Berkeley journalist Lauren Markham brings the lived experience of two young Salvadoran migrants and their family under a spotlight. The picture she paints is nuanced and moving as well as sobering.Identical twins Ernesto and Raúl Flores were seventeen years of age when, separately, they crossed the Rio Grande into Texas with the help of coyotes. Though in so many ways their experience is unique, they also stand in for the tens of thousands of young Central Americans who flooded across our southern borders earlier in this decade—and for many of the millions of Salvadorans, Hondurans, and Guatemalans who now reside in the United States. Nearly all recent refugees from Central America were driven north by the gang violence and official corruption that are now endemic in the region. However, as Markham makes clear, economic motives also loomed large. Abject poverty conjures up visions of prosperity in "El Norte" among many Central Americans, as it does in many other people around the world. As I read about the often horrific circumstances that confronted the Flores brothers over the three-year span described in the book, I couldn't help but think about the sharply contrasting experience of my father's parents, who emigrated from Russia early in the 20th century. Their lives in the shtetl where they had lived, plagued by repeated pogroms, were at least as difficult as those of the Flores twins in El Salvador. Also, it was no easy feat for them to make their way through the vastness of the European continent and then across the Atlantic in steerage. But the welcome they received at Ellis Island, though decidedly chilly, was in no way comparable to the repeated violence and official hostility that met the Flores brothers both on their way and after their arrival. As the author makes clear, the massive migration of young Central Americans to the United States is, in a large sense, the consequence of US policy in the region throughout the 20th century, but especially in the 1980s. In El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala alike, our government actively supported local efforts to stamp out local insurgents in the name of anti-Communism—murdering tens of thousands of peasants in the process. Large numbers of young men fled to the US to escape that violence. Many succumbed to the lure of crime and were imprisoned in California. There, in prison and on the streets of Los Angeles, the most violent gangs that victimize Central America today were formed (Mara Salvatrucha, or MS13, and Barrio 18). Today, these gangs are enormous, multinational criminal enterprises. They're responsible for an outsized body count in our cities and a major share of drug trafficking in the US today. In a real sense, then, we're paying the price of our government's intervention in Central America in the last century. And so are tens of thousands of migrants from the region. The Far Away Brothers is Lauren Markham's first book, but the Berkeley author and journalist has been writing fiction, essays, and journalism for several years. The book is based in part on her work at Oakland International High School since 2011, where the Flores brothers attended classes on and off, and more generally on her "thirteen years of experience working with, interviewing, and reporting alongside thousands of refugees and migrants like the Flores twins."After reading The Far Away Brothers it's difficult to see how today's "illegal immigrants" are in any substantive way different from the Irish, Chinese, Italians, and Jews who made their way into the US in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

This is an important book written with passion and intelligence about the real life experience of a family trying to escape violence and poverty in El Salvador and move through even more violence and terror in route to the USA. It truly is a must read. Markham has a real gift for writing a riveting story woven with her researched facts of immigration from El Salvador to the USA. Her work challenges our assumptions and helps us understand what is really happening on our borders and who is gaining what. It is not an easy book to read but it is written with the heart and soul of what lies behind our current news broadcasts - on either side of the debate. Read it. Discuss it. Call her!

Riveting story that portrays one family being torn apart by violence and our inhumane U.S. immigration policies. It's also a beautifully told coming of age story for these brothers who have normal adolescent struggles on top of being unaccompanied minors. High recommended!

One of the best books of the year. Amazing combination of journalism and human story. Touching and informative. Can't wait for more from this author.

This was a great book.. Especially for our book group here in immigration rich California.. Amazingly for non fiction, (it had me in the edge of my seat hoping all would turn out well. She did not gloss over the difficulties with protagonist S either.. Very human assessment.. Does it turn out OK? Does it?

Markham describes the impact of El Salvador’s poverty and gang violence on the Flores family, in particular the Flores twin brothers, and the socioeconomic and legal factors shaping the lives of immigrants, particularly undocumented ones, in the U.S. For anyone interested in increasing their knowledge and understand on current migration patterns without the dehumanizations on those involved.

Love this entire series! It's great to read a christian book that has a good story behind it. You get to experience everything through the eyes of a teenage girl and the ups and downs of life and finding love.

I read these books as a teen, and have now purchased the new omnibus set for one of my students. Christy Miller is an average American teen girl, and these books tell the story of the development of her identity as she explores her faith, relationships, and what it means to be a woman. Books 4-6 are some of the most fun, as the characters get fleshed out and the romantic tension between Christy and Todd escalates. The books are certainly Christian-focused, but they leave a lot of room for discussion of tough issues. I strongly recommend these for middle school girls who want to read about romance but aren't ready for the sometimes graphic world of YA.

I'm a thirty something lady but God is really speaking to me thru the development of the Christy character beginning with the age 14. God bless you Robin; so cool to see God move thru the gifts of People.

Great book for teen girls. Christy's struggles are common to many girls and her attempts to respond in godly manner (though she fails at times) will be an encouragement to young readers.

Although I am an adult, I've enjoyed all the Christy Miller stories. Christy is the sort of person I would have loved to have had for a friend during high school, and I think many girls can relate to her. The pacing of the stories is sometimes a little slow, and the supporting characters, especially Christy's parents, should have been much better developed. Still, the stories are so enjoyable they are well worth reading.

Gift for a young lady that helped us serve dinner every Wednesday night at our church's Family Night.

I'm not a teenager but I am young at heart and I highly recommend this series! You just fall in love with the main character Christy and you hope that your daughter or grand daughter might "live" like Christy with her values.

Robin Jones Gunn is my favorite author. The Christy Miller series is "must read" literature for all teenaged girls and their moms. I just wish I could have had this resource when my girls were teenagers!

Collins does a particularly good job of handling with remarkable objectivity the many controversial issues related to the scrolls and their interpretation. Where he has an opinion, he is clear in stating that it is his opinion. I was particularly struck by the way in which he addressed John Strugnell's situation. This is the best overview of current scholarship on the DSS that is available to the general public in my opinion.

Collins' book covers two stories. There is the story as portrayed in the scrolls themselves, the history and secrets contained within the fragmented manuscripts. For example within its texts are some of the earliest Jewish writings, stating laws about diets, the clean, and the unclean. Prophecies written 2000 years before Stephen King's "The Stand" chronicle the wars between the Children of Light and the Children of Darkness. While these texts have been translated in other books, Collins' work also offers a history of the discovery of the scrolls themselves. While most of the general populace believes the texts exist as one large document discovered in one cave at a single moment in time, Collins reveals that many texts resided in many different areas apart from the cave where the first was unearthed, Some ancient manuscripts believed to be related to the texts found in the first cave were in fact hiding in other areas several miles away in some instances. Collins goes on to relate the first scholars who studied the texts, and in particular how Jewish scholars were excluded from examining the manuscripts because of political reasons. These original scholars published their findings and theories about the texts in the late 1950's and early 1960's, some of which have been debunked by contemporary and later scholars. New realizations have been revealed even as late as the 1980's and 1990's. Overall a very enjoyable and insightful look at one of the greatest archeological finds concerning religious literary tradition.

In retirement, I have become an amateur theologian--trying to educate myself on the bible and religious scholarship. Collins has become one of my favorite authors. He is scholarly, a very good writer, and a clear thinker. He has many fields of expertise, and one is the Dead Sea Scrolls. I found this book very educational on the history of the discovery of these important manuscripts and the tangled history of their availability to scholars. It is a short and very readable book. I would have preferred a little more of the contents of the various manuscripts, but that is much too broad a topic for Collins and his expertise for such a short book.If you know little of the discovery and availability of these important biblical manuscripts, as I did, this is a great place to start.

The Dead Sea Scroll exibit is currently in town and so I wanted to read a few sources to brush up on my previous understanding of the scrolls. (I visit Israel every year and have had a chance to hike up to Cave 1 the past three years.) Collins does a good job laying out the information and nuances of the scrolls. As one previous reviewer noted, the short book is a bit tedious/dry in some places, especially for a resource that I believe is more meant for beginners. But I found no fault with the information, based on my previous knowledge, and think this would be fine for the average person who's looking to understand more.

John Collins is an experienced and recognized Old Testament scholar with lots of contact with the Dead Sea Scrolls. Heard him give a private dinner presentation recently in New Haven that summarized the major themes of his new book on the Scrolls. Had already purchased the book but hadn't read it at the time that I heard him in person talk about the Scrolls. The "biography" approach is extremely helpful in presenting the varied history of the Scrolls and in understanding the different custodians of the Scrolls. Of course, there are scrolls and then there are scrolls within the Scrolls that make for highly interesting and intriguing reading. Great book for the first-time student as a survey and the long-time observer with reminders and clearer details about the history of the Scrolls.

I bought this book for my mother to read and share with her book club. However, I must admit that before I give it to her I am carefully sneaking and reading it myself. I heard about this interesting history book on my public broadcasting station. And I couldn't wait to purchase it. It's a good book for those interested in religious history. Fascinating. In addition, this is an attractive, nicely sized hardback book that I think my mother's aged hands will enjoy holding.

I knew little to nothing about the Dead Sea Scrolls, and found this little book to be very informative -- a very good starter for someone who wants to know the basic history about them and their discovery. The book is a bit tedious in places, but overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable read.

Have read a number of books, articles on Dead Sea ScrollsThis one is concise yet packed with solid facts. Greatdiagrams and photos too. Definitely one I use for mystudents. Not too expense keeping in mind students'budgets. Yet covers all the basics. I stronglyrecommend this current text.

I am a literacy leader at my school, and I just purchased one of these books for every grade level in the school. I also talked our county-wide literacy coach into purchasing a copy for every literacy leader in our district. I cannot say enough about how fantastic this book is. It is jam-packed with great strategies for introducing and/or reviewing reading standards. They are easily adapted for all elementary and even middle school grade levels. This book and Genre Connections should be on every reading teacher's professional library shelf!!

I loved this book! I devoured it on a camping trip--a place where I usually avoid work related reading--and found myself planning lessons and how I could incorporate these ideas and lessons into out mandated, less-than-stellar, curriculum. I did my first lesson, and the kids really enjoyed it. The concrete object lesson seemed to really resonate with them.

I've heard many teachers talk about Tanny McGregor's book for several years. I finally bought it and LOVE IT! The ideas are incredible and easy to adapt and implement in the classroom. It gave me different ideas to use and helped me to see things from a students perspective. I recommend this to anyone who is trying to make concrete connections for their students.

This book is just...... wow. I feel like it should be way more known in the teacher crowd than it is. Every elementary teacher should have this book. I kept reading chapter after chapter getting more and more excited, thinking-- this is what I've been looking for all along! Tanny takes each "big idea" comprehension strategy-- matacognition, schema, etc. and gives you a handful of perfect lessons to teach it. When I say perfect, I mean PERFECT. They are so engaging and cute, yet drive the idea home so no student will ever forget it. The lessons all start with something concrete, like paint color samples, salad bowls, a lint roller. These props are the things that make the lessons stick in kids' minds, yet they are the things that I am never creative enough to come up with on my own. After the idea is introduced with this concrete object, students explore it with wordless picture books and then move on to texts. I can't remember the last time I've been so excited about a teaching book. It definitely goes in my top 3 teaching books ever. (The other two are The Daily 5 and On Solid Ground.)

Every elementary teacher needs to buy this book! Gives you a clever way to introduce reading skills like: inferring, predicting, schema, visualizing

I am very impressed with Tanny's books. I have learned a lot about the teaching of reading, and she is a fantastic teacher to teachers. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a teacher or intrigued by the process of learning to read and teaching to read.

I didn't quite realize the little nugget I had purchased until I was about 35,ooo feet in the air!I bought this book at the recommendation of a teacher on my grade level near the end of the school year. I skimmed it and decided it could wait until summer vacation. I guess the black and white photos didn't entice me enough to read immediately. It was tucked into my carry on bag and I pulled it out after the flight attendants made their way up and down the aisle with drinks and pretzels. Instead of quickly reading for tidbits, it was clear that I needed to take careful notes, ask questions, and create a list of activities to engage my students into thinking about their thinking. The author creates a framework in which teaching strategies isn't complicated, abstract or boring. Before the students get into the text and begins inferring, visualizing or identifying their schema, Ms. McGregor has given lesson ideas, lesson dialogue and lesson visuals that are fun, mysterious, personal, interactive, and engaging. I also love that her lessons do not need an expensive setup to complete. Any prop or materials she suggests in teaching strategies is something easily obtained for low or no cost.I read half of the book during a California to Texas flight. It was simple to read but full of insight, ideas, and resources that I had not considered using when teaching comprehension strategies. I wish she had mentioned a few more picture books she has used with particular success for each strategy. Now that I have this big picture of comprehension strategies in my head, I imagine new ideas for lessons will come up no matter what book I am reading. It's just nice to have a cheat sheet to start with.Excited about using this book as a jumping off point this year!

There are few books on comprehension out there that are applicable to primary and intermediate teachers. This is one of those books. These are more than just great ideas and lessons. Tanny takes you through all the steps in the "gradual release of responsibility model".What kind of gems await you in this book? How about an object lesson on metacognition that uses a salad to show how real reading is a mixture of the text (lettuce) and thinking (tomatoes). Just like a salad is boring with just lettuce, so is reading without thinking.

#656,405 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have just finished reading “Dark Chapter,” having stayed up late last night to complete it. I had to wait until 12:00 AM June 1st to receive it on my Kindle here in the U.S. Winnie Li did a remarkable job of writing this story based on a true dark episode in her life of a brutal rape in the afternoon during a hike in Belfast.I loved the way she was able to capture the story alternating between her report of the devastating incident and her feelings with that of her rapist a 15 year old troubled teenager. She being a Taiwanese American Harvard graduate living in London with a great sense of adventure and love for travel and he being an abused child with no education leading a criminal life. She included a good part of the story to the perpetrator to understand his impoverished wretched life.I felt her pain and the great support she received from her friends, the police and medical people in Belfast. And also the letdown from many in the London medical community while she went through her recovery which will probably leave scars for a lifetime. She has a message for everyone about rape, how it’s handled and the many more unreported rapes that never get reported throughout the world that go without justice being served. She also shares how she was able to get on with her life and sense of adventure. The author is a very brave and talented writer to bring this novel to fruition after many years of working on it. I recommend it to all readers and to bookclubs as there is so much to discuss about it.

Nobody can truly understand the experience of a rape survivor. Winnie Li's novel gives us a chance to try, with great effect. The story is a thriller and a page turner, bringing you into Vivian's life and that of her attacker, bringing you into this uniquely traumatic and heart-wrenching experience, bringing you into the unknowns of the recovery process, making you wish you could reach into the pages to help. It's painful, l but in the end inspiring, to know that Li's own resilience and strength helped to bring you this novel, helped to explain what it is like for a woman to experience sexual assault, to interact with the criminal justice and social support systems with their warts and flaws, to see her life and relationships in a whole new way. And in the end, you wish that everyone else could read this story because the world will be a better, more empathetic and supportive place if you do.

I can't praise this book enough. Not just that it addresses head-on one of the biggest social issues facing us today, but it's also a courtroom thriller and drama that rivals Grisham on his best day. Don't read this book if you don't want to think, want to feel, want to get angry or want to hope. It's that good.

I've never read a book quite like this. Although the subject of rape is by nature both awkward and traumatic, the book itself reads like a dance. First, you are introduced to the protagonist Vivian, then passages later to the villain Johnny. Their lives at first seem worlds apart until they collide into the horrific moment in the park. From that moment onward, it's like a new timeline is created with the intersection of their lives. There are thoughts of "what-if's" and "how could this happen?" Despite the nightmare, their lives must continue to unfold. Li has crafted a thoughtful and provoking book that opens up a safe space for discussion of sexual assault. Inspiring.

Poignant and brave novel that depicts a woman's rape and the aftermath of all she has to endure, the before and after of this life changing event. But what makes this story particularly arresting is that half the novel is also told from the rapists pov and allows us to understand what circumstances shaped this boy. The novel does not minimize or excuse the depravity of what he did, but it does allow the reader to see why he is this way in the first place.

Li has accomplished something really special in this novel -- it's gripping and frequently disturbing, but it's also empathetic and has thoughtful things to say about how our society handles sexual violence. I couldn't put it down.

Winner of the Guardian's 2017 "Not The Booker Prize" in UK. A voice before the #MeToo and #TimesUp.This is a page turner crime novel. Refreshing, skillful written fiction based on author’s personal tragic assalt while hiking in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It’s suspense and sad and bravery and empowering. A must read for all genders.

A riveting and disturbing story, it is very well written. The characters are very well developed They are complex and troubled people in a complex, troubled world. Rape is of course a difficult subject and this novel looks at it in an insightful manner and explores it from every angle.

Stephen Crockett is a really talented writer. This book shocked me, made me cry, and gave me hope. In the end it's a happily ever after story--but he does make you look at your own disappointments and how you choose to deal with them. Stephen, even though you may not realize it, its your tender heart and true humanity that led you to this place. Many harden their heart, make tons of money, have all the outward trappings and appearance of success, yet they are shells who chose to stick it to others to deal with their disappontments--you didnt lose your heart. Jesus loves you --let Him catch you. Thanks for sharing your story.

For those who like an inside view of someone's personal hell with addiction, this life story is it. Great companion to his black tar book. Very proud of the guy.

You see them on street corners, hiding in doorways, furtively watching, waiting for their next fix, selling drugs, or perhaps they have just had a shot. When you see drug addicts or alcoholics on the streets, or in the dark corners of bars, do you ever wonder why, and how, they became addicted? What made this person take that particular route through life, and at what stage couldn’t they say no?Perhaps you walk by pitying them, looking on with distain, smugly thinking that you will never be in their position, you would never become an alcoholic, or a drug addict. If you do, just stop and think. Who are you to judge? There is a very true saying “You cannot judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes.” As we go through our lives we make decisions, some very minor, or so we think at the time, however, everything we do comes with consequences. The face we put on to the world is not necessarily the person within, many of us hide behind masks. Sometimes this is done in the knowledge that we want to be deceptive, mislead, and bend a person to our will. However for many others it is a necessity, the only way to deal with the demons within, self-preservation.Stephen Crockett life changed at a very early age, when he could no longer endure being surrounded by religious fanaticism, made to attend church, and being beaten if he asked questions. It was in his 18th year however, just before graduation that his drug and alcohol abuse really took hold. Stephen had tried drink and marijuana before, however, whilst his fellow class mates were getting ready for the graduation photo, Stephen was sitting in the car park, passed out drunk. He missed his graduation ceremony because he was in hospital, recovering from asphyxia, and acute alcoholic poisoning.Missing that ceremony seems to be a turning point, in his own mind he became invisible, unworthy, from then on he began his quest to blending into the background, suffering tremendous feelings of disappointment in himself, and depression. His decision to leave the countryside for the town opened his eyes to a whole new world, and he became addicted to Heroin, the mother of all illegal drugs, which claims more lives than all the others put together. Stress and depression become his monsters in the closet, as trapped in his miserable existence he turns to drugs and alcohol. Soon he becomes part of the underground scene, dealing drugs, and living from fix to fix, in a drugs and alcohol induced haze. This book, and its companion ‘Black Tar’ has opened my eyes to a world I knew nothing about. Stephen has a very frank way of writing, and in his own unique no holds barred style, he talks openly about the addiction he has had for decades. What will the future hold for you if you go down the same route? Well, as Stephen so graphically explains, you will lose everything – no not just physical things, but yourself, self-worth, friends, and so much more.So what has become of Stephen now?Is he drugs free, and if so how did he do it?Find out by reading his compelling story - I guarantee you it will be an eye-opener!I downloaded this book using my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

This book bothered me. I read the author's book Black Tar first and it was an engaging story. But this book contradicts what the author wrote in Black Tar....he said he never had more than "just a girlfriend"....in Black Tar he was engaged. This book is not a diary...it is 100 pages of rambling and musing. The author uses the word "you" excessively when he means "me". He does not speak for all addicts. Also, the lack of grammar is very distracting from the writing. He does not know the difference between your and you're nor the difference between a plural and an '.

I've read all his books. The guy knows what he is talking about. Feel proud that he recovered. The best of his books is Black tar.

Gave good insight into the mind of an addict. Sad story.

Review

“Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. The stark photo by Paul Strand illustrating The Ugly Laws: Disability in Public conveys perfectly the realities and subtleties described in its pages—including the fear, pity, and revulsion with which the public so often regards those with physical disabilities.” -California Lawyer"This book is, as Schweik convincingly caharacterizes it, 'a history of the harm done by—let us allow the phrase some force—lack of regard.' It provides useful background for understanding current efforts to encode and enforce protections for the disabled and disadvantaged."-Marilyn Chandler McEntyre,The Christian Century“Shweik combines a sophisticated grasp of disability, critical race and social theory, extensive archival and legal research, close textual analysis, and broad reading in a wide range of historical and other literatures. Her account brings the insights of disability history and theory to bear on systems of exclusion, subordination, and othering more generally in American life as the United States entered the twentieth century... This is a powerful book, essential reading for scholars of disability, race, gender, sexuality, immigration, urban, legal, social movement, and twentieth-century history more generally—indeed, for anyone concerned about law and its power and the limits of that power to define borders of belonging.”-American Historical Review"The Ugly Laws is a focused and deeply mined interrogation of a familiar cultural figure—the unsightly beggar—that has not until now been critically examined. Schweik is a virtuosa of both close reading and the big picture, merging historical scholarship with analysis of the discursive elaboration and cultural work of the unsightly beggar figure. The Ugly Laws is an essential text." -Rosemarie Garland-Thomson,author of Extraordinary Bodies“Overall, this is a thorough, careful, and sensible work, which is both fascinating and also moving as an account of social oppression of disabled people.”-Metapsychology Online Reviews“What is ugliness, and how ugly is too ugly? Perverse though such discrimination might seem today, Schweik suggests that re-examining such laws ‘might prove very useful as a way of foregrounding the inevitable ambiguity of the category of ‘disability.’”-The Chronicle Review"The range of concerns illuminated by Schweik's materialist and historicist focus on the ordinances proves that The Ugly Laws has succeeded, as the book's poignant last words put it, in showing how much more we understand when we begin to face the history of disability'"-Jean Franzino,Register of the Kentucky Historical Society“In analyzing the ugly laws, Schweik reveals how individuals have come to define their identities around work and self-sufficiency, and how the failure of those with disabilities to do so can result in character assassination of these individuals as frauds and morally bankrupt, diseased tricksters and thieves. A subtle and complex study.” -Choice"Schweik uses ‘unsightly beggar’ laws in American cities in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to explore fundamental questions about disability, race, gender, and class in new and often startling ways. The book is beautifully written, delightfully thought-provoking, and deeply researched. It is quite honestly the best work of scholarship I have read in a long time." -Douglas C. Baynton, author of Forbidden Signs“Susan Schweik... has written a brilliant study of the ugly laws that illuminates this largely forgotten corner of the American history of body impairments, aesthetic norms, and urban spatial regulation. Schweik’s book serves, too, as a powerful demonstration of the vast potential of disability studies, like gender studies and queer theory with which it is frequently allied, to enlarge and to transform our understandings of what is frequently taken for granted as natural, to shed new light on the subterranean recesses of culture, and not simply to assist us to think “outside the box,” but to question whether there needs to be a box at all... The riotous encounters she analyzes, with their mixture of menace, chaos, conflicting cultures, and colorful characters, paint fascinating, Dickensian word pictures that bring to life the illusive, urban crowd and its antagonists in compelling and analytically pointed ways.”-Journal of Social History

The Ugly Laws is a very thorough and interesting historical account of how the disabled were treated and mistreated in America's past. It does have its shortcomings, however. For one thing, it is very verbose and repetitive. It also delves too deeply into side issues such as language semantics and characters in fiction literature. It would have been much better if it had more stories of real people affected by the ugly laws, such as Arthur Franklin Fuller. Still, in spite of its problems, The Ugly Laws captured my attention and kept it for the duration of my reading of it.

This book was one that scared me. Being a victim of polio I could easily have been put away.

This book has two faces. On the one hand, it reflects an enormous amount of original research, locating obscure local ordinances from around the country and relying on important archival sources. Kudos to the author for not merely resting on the research of others. I am keeping this book on my shelf as a reference. But the book is almost impossible to read cover to cover. Instead of just starting with a theoretical framework and using that theory (or theories) to describe the results of the research, the theory overwhelms almost every chapter. And the author seems to continually shift perspectives -- trying in the same page (and sometimes the same paragraph) to describe the enactment and enforcement of the laws as a historical events, critically examine the motives of the actor under various perspectives, and also explain how the incidents were used and understood in the modern disability-rights movement. While each point is important, mushing them together makes it hard to understand anything.

This is utterly appalling that people were treated so inhumanely due to have disabilities! I'm amazed at how humanity can be towards others that are different from themselves and then to pass laws against innocent persons is unbelievable. My rating does not reflect the author. It's like watching the news and being turned off by all the crime being reported. I would suggest this book to others. I'm keeping it in my library.

Ugly Laws is an important contribution to disability studies. It is carefully researched, well written and explores and generates important ideas. It is a model of the type of scholarship that will advance this exciting relatively new field.

All I can say is buy it! You won't be disappointed only intrigued. Shipped fast and packaged nicely! A Must Read!

Fascinating and important read!

In "The Ugly Laws: Disability in Public", Susan Schweik writes, “My aim here is threefold: first, to provide a fuller account of the story of unsightly subjects than has yet been written; second, to rethink aspects of U.S. culture through the insights of disability theory (and in turn to rethink aspects of disability studies through an encounter with the history of the American ugly); and finally, to illuminate the conditions of disability – and municipal law’s constitution of those conditions – in the late nineteenth century and at the century’s turn, so as to better understand law, culture, and disability in the present” (pg. 2). Schweik believes that “it was probably more the norm than the exception for this law to show up on the code books of American cities sometime in the late nineteenth or very early twentieth century” (pg. 3). Those who implemented the law did so in a manner suggesting that disability was the problem of individuals, rather than something requiring a reworking of “broader social inequalities” (pg. 5). In her work, Schweik draws upon the ugly law terminology coined by Marcia Pearce Burgdorf and Robert Burgdorf Jr. (pg. 7). Others historians, such as Rosemarie Garland Thomson in her "Extraordinary Bodies", examined the law in a passing manner, but Schweik forefronts it, focusing specifically on Chicago’s 1911 law, which has taken on mythic status in disability studies. In her focus, Schweik chooses “to embrace a model of disability, broadly construed, as a political process. Hence, [she focuses] on a particular form of political behavior, a blatantly conventionally political moment, the passing and implementation of a law, in order to understand that political event in the context of modern disability formation” (pg. 11).Schweik writes of the intersectionality of her model, “Gender, race, sexuality, religion, and national identity are inexorably intertwined with disability and class in the culture(s) of ugly law, producing a variety of ugly identities, both at each specific moment of ordinance enforcement…and in the broader social order that framed, ignored, fought over, and accepted the state and city codes” (pg. 141). The laws’ most flagrant violation of due process involved the interpretation of female beauty. The laws examined women’s “lack of attraction and beauty,” as well as “leanness and stoutness, shortness and tallness,” if they were awkward, the condition of their hair, the size of their breasts, and whether or not they dressed pleasantly (pg. 145). In attempting to limit the mobility of women, the laws created categories for which any women could face arrest. Schweik continues, “Cities across the country…embedded the ugly law specifically within a matrix of codes concerning local purity: decency and exhibition, gender and sexuality…These patterns of codification make clear that the ugly law was intrinsically tied to laws of sex and gender” (pg. 144). While male vagrancy and “ugliness” usually involved missing limbs or severe injury, many laws defined female ugliness in terms of variance from idealized female beauty, equating the display of these differences with prostitution and other women whom society viewed as out of their place (pg. 145). These laws, which defined any physical or sexual aberrance as criminal, reinforced notions of white male superiority.
