Review

The Cruising Guide to Abaco is a wonderful help on board as well as for planning a sailing trip in the Abacos. It has all the necessary charts for approach planning and nice aerial images showing the way to anchorages. To make navigation easy there is an outstanding set of GPS waypoints you can use with the boat's plotter. An exceptional help are the charts of dive moorings and dive spots to find all the dive spots on your own not being dependent on the dive shops and their preselected dive spots schedule. I wished this guide would be regularily available in Europe as well. Amazon 2015 --Amazon.comFormat: Spiral-boundVerified PurchaseGreat guide. This cruising guide has just too many commercials and promotional material to be a good book; especially when you pay for it. If they want to have as much advertisement in this book, they may as well give it out for free and let the businesses advertising on it pay for boaters to have for free. There are less ads in your local phone book - and that is free!

The Abaco Cruising Guide is for any one who loves the Abacos not just boaters ,and Steve Dodge and sons do it right ; history , availability of restaurants , fuel, accommodations ,activities along with the routes and dangers to avoid for safe passage . As a sometime sailboat renter and recently just hanging out on island time [ we try every other year ] the Guide is invaluable tool to enhance your travels to this wonderful part of the Bahamas . We update every year and give our old copy to like minded friends .

Dodge is slightly better than Pavlidis at showing charts and pictures that explain how to get into an anchorage.... but Pavlidis has a little better verbal explanations of what to expect and what is in each anchorage to see.... so I appreciate both authors.

I have used this series for quite a few years and would not leave for the Bahamas without one. Gives all the headings and distance to mosteverywhere you would want to go in your boat. Can't imagine being without it.

This should be a standard piece of gear for anyone cruising in the Abacos. Hundreds of color photos, many aerial, of islands, inlets and marinas. The navigation charts are accurate and updated every year. There are diving and fishing charts included too, as well as street maps. There is even a yellow page section of business listings. The ads help you find goods and services before you go or while you are there. There are sections on history as well as current events, plus the current tide tables and moon phases. Tons of information in this guide.

As far as I am concerned, "The Crusing Guide to Abaco Bahamas" is a must have cruising to the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas. Mr. Dodge's GPS waypoints are tried and proven year after year. You always want the latest edition for tides and business additions and changes. Don't leave for the Abaco's without one and with a GPS this is all you will need. Of course Amazon always has the best price and you don't have to leave home to get one.

EXTREMELY helpful on our week long charter in the Abacos. We did 99% of our planning with this cruising guide and when we got there we found all the info to be up to date and relevant.

Extremely helpful for navigation because the rental boat had no gps or navigation other than a compass.

#4,139,703 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I used this book to start to learn from scratch how to programming Unix. This book is self-contained,concise and easy to read. FYI, it is very readable and not dry. There's a number of good diagrams, for example, illustrating file descriptors allocations and the effects of system calls like dup2, etc. The authors uses short code snipplet to illustrate how to use a particular system calls, which I think is rather neat. A number of "projects" very quickly help reader to expand their skill level. Of interest is also a project on distributed "Richard" and "Linda" , the forerunner of Sun's JINI. The authors could have expanded this book another 100 pages and make it a companion to Steven's "Advanced Unix System Programming". I strongly recommend this book to beginners, intermediate Unix Programmers.

This is an awesome book. You'll have to be patient when going through it. And you'll learn a lot if you follow along with the examples and make everything work. It took me probably 6 hours just to get through chapter 2 - not because I can't read, but because I'm paying attention to every little detail, and making sure I learn what's going on.The other thing that came as a big surprise, was that this is the best introduction to C i've come across. I've read quite a few books on C. Generally, I get through these other books on C - I get the syntax and pointers, and headers, etc. What I can never get through in these other C books, is that they use Math for all the examples. Which bores me, and sometimes frustrates me - because what I want to do with systems programming is not math - that's just me.Of all the C books I've read, this one, and "C - A Reference Manual 5th Edition" are the best C books. One pitfall in the book, is that with most of the examples, the conditionals to check pointers, and some other conditionals are somewhat amateur looking (that's just me). For example, in chapter 2, the "listlib.c" file has tons of conditionals like this:list_t **newptrs;if(headptr == NULL){ errno = EINVAL; return -1;}That started to confuse me, why not just write:list_t **newptrs;if(!headptr){ errno = EINVAL; return -1;}Which is ok. So there are many times where it seems the author is either purposefully writing conditionals to be verbose for readers, or doesn't know how to simplify with "not" flips.Another example:if(ptr != NULL)can be simplified to:if(ptr)Other than those small things, this book is great.EDIT: One other thing that's slightly annoying. The authors like to put all of their code in conditionals. Like this:if ((sigemptyset(&twosigs) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGINT) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGQUIT) == -1)) perror("Failed to set up signal mask");For me that's ok in only a few places. They do it everywhere and it's really annoying. Maybe they did it just to save space in the book?

its a texbook

Fantastic book with great code examples and exercises. The discussion and examples escalate very quickly so much prior knowledge is recommended. I would recommend it to anyone that is wanting to learn about UNIX.

This is an invaluable reference to keep close at hand if you are a programmer supporting UNIX. The only thing I didn't find in this text is how to change your process name on-the-fly. Everything else I've looked for was there, and in most cases, described in detail. If you do systems programming on UNIX then you should have this book.

Lots of useful sample programs

If Stevens is the Old Testament this book is the New Testament.I was thinking lately what it is about Stevens books that has made them the best material in the industry for the past decade. I cant really nail it, if I could I would have been an author myself and make millions, but the other day it suddenly hit me: When I read Stevens books sometimes a question arises and then I pause to think about it, only to turn the page and find the answer witinf for me. It is about being comprehensive, it is about covering all aspects of the topic, thinking forward on behalf of the reader, thinking what the reader may not understand and how to make it clear.Well Robbins and Robbins belongs to this category of books.I am a book maniac and I have most of the Unix/Linux programming books out there. This is by far the best systems programming book available. The other day I had to look up about asynchronous i/o in Linux and its interaction with POSIX real time signals. Opened the book, read the example, downladed the source code, in an hour I was flying and writing an asynchronous web server in Linux. For the networking stuff I never bothered to read the relevant chapters of the book since Stevens Network programming is the book I was trained by and it is still relevant. For my threading needs I used to use Butenhof's "Programming with POSIX threads", but this book has great examples and I learned a lot by browsing it. I mean I had a question about signal interaction with threads and the book had a section about it. Come on, it has saved my butt many many times. It is very comprehensive.I wholeheartedly recomend it to any serious systems programer, beginner or advanced.

I hate Terry Pratchett.I get home from a hard day at work, I cook dinner, I eat dinner, I wash up, and then sit down to some TV. In a short time, I'm so sick of commercials I turn off the TV and begin reading. The problem is that I start reading and then the next thing I know it's 5am, and I've got to get up in an hour, so I think, "might as well keep reading for another hour." Then I look up again and it's 10:30, I haven't slept and I'm 4 hours late for work, so I call in sick and finish the book. The absolute worst part, even when I'm finished with the book, I'm so anxious to read more Pratchett that I am compelled to run to the bookstore and get the next one.So, basically, Pratchett sucks because I'm out of sick days.

This entry in Terry Pratchetts wonderful Discworld series concerns the disruption caused when the magical fantasy world discovers the pros and cons of daily newspapers. Many old friends appear, including Gaspode the Talking Dog and Captain Carrot of the City Watch. We are also introduced to several new characters, including a reformed vampire (hes taken the pledge not to drink human blood) and Discworld's first gossip columnist.Pratchett, as always, manages to be funny and touching, wildly inventive, and pointedly analytical, all at the same time.

This is one of my favorites in the Discworld books. As someone who does a lot of writing I can so get into and enjoy the mind of William de Worde, but there are also so many fascinating characters either added or fleshed out in this book. Imagine a vampire photographer who uses flash photography! Pin and Tulip are -ing hilarous (you have to read the book to understand the -ing reference) and worth the time the book takes even if nothing more were to happen in the story. The Truth gives you time to visit with the Archchancellor of Unseen Univerity, the Bursar, Vetinari, CMOT Dibbler, Cheery Littlebottom, Vimes, Captain Carrot, Angua, Igor, and Mr. Slant so you aren't ignoring your favorite characters even while you learn about the life of a mild-mannered newsletter writer like William. Anyone who didn't grow up to be what their father planned for them to be will relate to William and find themselves cheering for him to succeed. I highly recommend this book. We took it along on a road trip and everyone who listened as it was read aloud has been demanding a chance to read the book for themselves, too.

I recommend this as a starter for anyone interested in The Discworld books. Its a good stand alone that has many of the series main characters in side roles. It gives a good sense of the intelligence and humor of Pratchett's work. Its not my favorite of the series but a good point to go anywhere from.

It's important to note that in the Discworld, newspapers have never existed. The engravers guild, in order to preserve their monopoly on printing, preventing anyone from using a mechanical press. That is until a group of dwarfs arrive from the mountains yearning to make money by printing.Along comes young William de Worde, a prodigal aristocrat whose broken from his wealthy father to make it on his own. When William visits the printing shop, he finds himself plunged into the new world of journalism. Together with a proper young lady named Sacharissa, they set out to create the Disc's first newspaper called the Times. As luck would have it, just as they're starting out, a huge story breaks. The metropolis of Ankh-Morpork's leader, The Patrician, is accused of stabbing his clerk with a knife and then trying to flee the city with embezzled funds. The City Watch is baffled by the case, but William soon finds a "man" on the inside, the mysterious Deep Bone. Aided by Sacharissa, the dwarfs, and a vampire photographer (on the wagon, meaning he only drinks animal blood) who turns to dust if he uses flash photography, William is determined to get to the bottom of things. But the truth isn't always so easy to set free, especially when hired goons are trying to kill you. This was a good addition to the series, but it could have been better. When I first read the description, I thought for sure there'd be some Citizen Kane references in there. I was expecting William to be one of those larger-than-life type characters like Charlie Kane and his real world counterpart William Randolph Hearst. That never materialized, which is disappointing. Instead William is an earnest young man in search of The Truth, which is OK too, but don't we all like more grandiose characters? There are some good insights into what makes the news, especially in the comparison between the Times and its rival The Inquirer--which despite its name is more based on Weekly World News. As the Deep Bone indicates there are references to Watergate and also the hired goons Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip are based on the killers in Pulp Fiction, as evidenced by the line, "Do you know what they call a sausage-inna-bun in Klatch?"On a side note, this story probably was the template for the later Going Postal, the first in the series I read. That involved the creation--resurrection really--of the post office in a similar fashion. Though the central character of that one, Moist von Lipwig, was more interesting. Conmen are just more exciting than conflicted aristocrats. And that's all the news fit to print.
