Two earlier works grew out of their reporting from China. Then they wrote Half the Sky, a New York Times bestseller that explored the oppression and the potential of women to build a better world. In A Path Appears, the couple set their sights higher:“So many social problems in the twenty-first century seem intractable and insoluble. We explore Mars and embed telephones in wristwatches, but we can’t keep families safe in inner cities. We can map subatomic particles such as gluons, and we can design robots that drive cars, respond to speech, and defeat grandmasters in chess, but we grudgingly accept failure in our struggles to keep kids in school, off drugs, and out of gangs.”Through snapshots of extraordinary individuals who building large-scale, mission-driven enterprises, both for-profit and nonprofit, Kristof and WuDunn demonstrate the capacity of the human race to prevail against our most deep-seated social and economic challenges. However, they are by no means cheerleaders for knee-jerk philanthropic efforts to right the world’s wrongs; they devote considerable effort to discussing the many missteps that others have taken along the same road, and they acknowledge that massive resources have been squandered in failing attempts by outsiders to improve the lives of the poor.At its most venturesome, A Path Appears is an attempt to determine why some people are altruistic and what can be done to raise the level of compassion in the world. Kristof and WuDunn interview cognitive scientists and even undergo brain scans themselves to gain better understanding of the chemical basis of altruism. Their exploration leads to conclusions few readers will find surprising: that helping others makes us feel good about ourselves, and that philanthropy is its own reward.However, the authors deplore the failure of the nonprofit sector to achieve scale. “Researchers from the Bridgespan Group wrote in the Stanford Social Innovation Review that more than 200,000 nonprofits have started since 1975, but that by 2008 only 201 had reached annual revenues of $50 million. In a similar time frame, more than 46,000 for-profit corporations broke the $50 million barrier.” Kristof and WuDunn note in passing that for-profit companies have the potential to be more sustainable than nonprofits. Unfortunately, they don’t acknowledge the implications of this contrast: that market-driven models hold far more promise for addressing global problems at scale than do philanthropic ones. If there’s a flaw in this book, that’s it.However, for a general audience seeking answers to how the human race can thrive in the face of the world-class challenges facing us, A Path Appears is a brilliant survey of what’s possible. In the final analysis, as Kristof and WuDunn conclude, “Our efforts at altruism have a mixed record of success at helping others, but they have an almost perfect record of helping ourselves.”

The words are part of a quote from the Chinese writer, Lu Xan: “Hope is a path on the mountainside. At first there is no path. But then there are people passing that way. And there is a path.” The words are also the title of the book by husband-wife writing team, Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. Worldwide correspondents, they have won multiple Pulitzers and witnessed many cultures, seeing both the good and the bad of each and watching how quickly little things can make a difference, especially when it comes to giving, not only monetarily but of oneself by advocating or mentoring. The subtitle of the book is Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity. Their book is a good reminder of what we begin to feel for others if only because we are made aware of just how fortunate we are. Certainly the appeals that flood our inboxes and mail begin to overwhelm us, something the authors mention as to why they undertook the writing of this book. "So many social problems in the twenty-first century seem intractable and insoluable. We started our married life together as foreign correspondents for The New York Times, and we have wondered for years how we can do a better job addressing the needs around us. Not everyone can help fight crime in a city's worst neighborhoods or volunteer in schools, so most of us are left to engage in piecemeal efforts such as a donation here or there. Like many Americans, we have day jobs we need to keep, and we have been busy raising our children; that has left us looking for great causes and people to support in modest ways. We aren't regular churchgoers who focus our giving on a particular religious establishment, and although we wanted to lend a hand, we never knew how to choose among the appeals from nonprofits that inundated us. Basically, we were mystified about how best to assist at home as well as abroad. So we investigated how one can do a better job of making a difference, how one can help institute effective change." This book is the fruit of our labors. The changes mentioned in the book are small but fulfilling, and so spread throughout the world that one is continually surprised at how many good causes and people are out there, people really trying and making a difference, be they dirt poor (a phrase that originated from medieval days when one didn't have enough money to even purchase a mat or some sort of flooring to cover the dirt ground of one's home) to flooded with riches or success. I mention the latter word because of a few sentences in the book. "Successful people often scorn those who are poor or homeless. A Princeton University scholar, Susan Fiske, has used scans to show that the brains of high-achieving people see images of poor people and process them as if they were not human but things." Just one example of the ease of making a difference came from their chapter, A Thirty-Million Word Gap. In this section, studies showed that "a child on welfare heard about 3 million words spoken a year, a working-class child about 6 million words a year, and a child of professionals about 11 million words annually." Hearing such an increased number of words led to higher IQ scores and higher achievement. But more so, "Children on welfare heard two words of discouragement for every encouraging one, while children of professionals received six encouraging words for every discouraging one," often not because they mean to but rather because of the stress of their struggling needs and, for the most part, their own upbringing. Even more interesting was the studies of brain scans showing that babies readily discern the difference between hearing a human talking to them and a television voice talking to them, treating the human voice as "social interaction" and treating the television or computer voice as "random noise." So much for Sesame Street. One simple effort is called Reach Out and Read which pediatricians "prescribe" reading for babies and young children. Says medical director Perri Klass, "For many parents, reading to a six-month-old before she can even speak seems alien. And in so many homes, the only book is a Bible on a high shelf, and you wash your hands before taking it down, and you certainly don't hand it to a toddler." One study of low-income Hispanic children found that "64% of the families reported that they didn't have a single children's book in their home." Reading to babies and pre-kindergarden children is now becoming more and more accepted as the results begin to pour in. Vocabularies and proficiencies are up, as are graduation rates in later studies. Parents enrolled in such programs report that reading to their children is now one of their favorite activities, not only for them as the parents but also for their children. And the average cost? $20 per child. Even business leaders and CEOs of groups such as Macy's and Proctor & Gamble are recognizing the ROI (return on investment) by funding such early childhood reading, saying, "investing in early childhood achieves the best ROI for our country. Currently more than 90 percent of our education dollars are spent after age five, yet 85 percent of a child's core brain structure is developed before age five." Who knew that the age-old (if diminishing) practice of reading a story to child at night (as so idyllically portrayed in the movies) would not only make a comeback, but would prove so valuable? Below are just a few of the many groups the authors mentioned in their book, those advocating for childhood reading and each doing so in its own unique and effective way. And this is but one small section of the book. If you're finding yourself as confused as the authors, sorting through the blizzard of mail and tinkling bells requesting money for the holidays, then you might want to pick up this book and have it bring a bit of joy in your life. Each chapter tells the true story of one or a group of people doing wonderful things to make positive changes in our world, some in completely unexpected ways. This is my favorite inspirational book, as it shows we all have the ability to make change and to help others, maybe in ways we never considered. I highly recommend it!

Kristof and WuDunn follow on the successful Half the Sky and continual coverage of social issues through news stories, columns and social media in this work that makes the connection between the stories they tell and the audience that consumes them. In the process, they answer a lingering question for folks: What, really can one person do to help. Olivia Wilde narrates the audiobook, and her work is appropriate for the text, somber and serious when needed but also interjecting life and humor when the book calls for it. Her voice is very easy to listen to. This book was also a perfect gift to a friend of mine who is trying to get more involved in mission work, though I did warn her that the intro will break your heart a little (okay, a lot).

Remarkably, Odette had once been married and still had three children but she persuades a relative to take care of them while she fulfills her patriotic duty for France. Odette is alone in Arles, France on Christmas eve 1942 and joins a group of German officers at their hotel. After a feast of cake and several bottles of Cote du Rhone she persuades the Germans to move a piano upstairs where the sounds can be enjoyed by a greater number of hotel guests. Not exactly a bit of spy craft but it does attest to Odette’s cleverness. Peter, Odette and several compatriots are captured by Nazis and taken by train to one of Germany’s infamous prison camps. Odette is subjected to some torture that even made me cringe but she would not reveal any military secrets. Peter and Odette begin to have romantic feelings about each other during this period and told their captors that they were married even though they were not. Because of Peter’s last name, the Nazis believed that they had caught a relative of the British Prime Minister; neither Peter nor Odette tried to tell them otherwise. The Nazis sent an offer to England and offer a trade: we’ll give you Peter Churchill in exchange for Rudolf Hess. England, however, would not agree to the switch. Both Peter and Odette survive the war, are released from prison and travel to England where they eventually marry. Because of her heroism during the war, Odette is selected to receive an award. In a large ceremony the George Cross is presented to her by none other than King George VI, the only woman being honored along with 249 men. Photographs, reference notes and the author’s commentary are provided. This is an inspiring book of non-fiction that reads like a exciting and tension-filled novel.

It was so harrowing, horrific and heart-breaking, I had to take many breaks while reading.'Code Name: Lise' worked for the SPINDLE Circuit (Special Operations Executive) or SOE as it is referred to in this book. She was born in France but moved to England at an early age. Odette was her name at birth.The entire time I was reading this true story, my admiration for her grew. From her recruitment into SOE and the training, her determination to succeed illustrated her true spirit. And, of course, I kept wondering what created her motivation? Despite numerous serious health problems at an early age, she persevered. And, persevered with an open mind and spirit.The depth of the training was intense and was divided into 4 phases. And, it should be noted that 80% of the trainees were disqualified. Not one area was left out....physical, explosives, weapons, ciphers, killing and even included grenades and machine guns. These agents were trained to the maximum and trust me, without this intense training, some would have not survived.Finally in early 1943, she was on her way and SPINDLE was set. Her commanding officer was Peter Churchill and the mission was in Marseilles, France. The beginning of the spy portion in this book.For me, some items really stood out including the rationing of food during the war. Also, on a personal note my Dad was in WW II aboard an aircraft carrier and he had told me years ago that the radio equipment was so heavy. In this book, the radio operator was tasked with carrying the equipment to different locations to avoid detection. As one may surmise, these operators were truly sought after as they had knowledge of many items the other side was extremely interested in.The treatment of the prisoners in the prisons and in the Concentration Camps was just plain horrific. The Gestapo had interrogation fine-tuned to extract the most information. I have never read more details about the interrogation techniques than in this book. And, this is when I had to take frequent breaks...excruciating is the word that comes to mind but really torture at its finest...ouch...Some better moments occurred, however, with the selfless priest, Father Steinert. Thank God, for people of his caliber... Truly a saint put into the cloak of a priest at the right time for the prisoners.And, I also kept wondering where in the world did Odette get her intestinal fortitude to carry on? Where does courage come from? And, why did she join in the SOE in the first place?The author has a most interesting Appendix that explains the awards (including the George Cross) given to Odette and Peter were not without a lot of controversy. And, controversy that continued for many years.Truly an educational read for me...especially the portions on the training aspect for SOE, the treatment of the prisoners by the Gestapo, and the manner in which the missions were carried out.Most highly recommended...

Granted we had several "snowed-in" days, but I finished this book in two sittings - couldn't put it down. I'd read a couple books on Odette's compatriot Nancy Wake, the White Mouse, and it was equally chilling/exciting/mesmerizing. These women (and men) had WAY more courage and endurance than I could ever hope to have! I hope we still have young people "coming up" who have this kind of patriotism and love for their fellowmen.

The author focuses a lot on the spy's time in prison, being mistreated, which I guess is appropriate since she got awards for her bravery in not talking. But I think he also likes going into descriptions of what exactly torture is like, which I find weird. And, ok, he tells us that she convinced prison guards of things that weren't true but that kept her and her captain safe. But. I wanted to know what the group did BEFORE she went to prison, and also read about a competent woman just doing something well.The first of the book focuses on other people's incompetence and on various mishaps. You come away thinking that this woman has a lot of respect from people but did kind of bumble through her work. I doubt that that's the reality.Amazon, please recommend more books about women doing things well. I don't want to read about mistreatment and misadventures. Thanks.

This story is gripping often hair raising and true! I so appreciate these books that remind us of our shared history and the heroes that lived it. This book is such a worthwhile and inspiring read. Just buy the book already!

Amazing. Like a bandaid for a girl with a broken heart, like something, someone telling you that you are worth more than anything. You deserve real love, do not waste your time with those who do not deserve you. I could quote anything from this book, and it would mend a broken heart. The first book in my life to make me cry tears of sadness and happiness. What a beautiful work of art.

I have read all 3 of the whiskey words and a shovel.. His poetry is like a raging forest fire! His words burning through my mind wanting them tattooed on my skin as reminders of how we should value ourselves never to let anyone diminish our flame. Thank you r.h you are so talented!!

Love, love, love this book. My entire life I have been fascinated with hand lettered/painted signs (calligraphy, sign painting, pinstriping, etc.) The more I got into graphic design, illustration, photography the more I appreciated this art form and how it is slowing going the way of the dinosaur. These artists created some amazing designs with minimal tools in their kits. No computers or fonts just their years of experience and loads of creativity. It is always nice to see an old building with some hand painted signage on the bricks outside. The book does a wonderful job of showing examples of their work along with a few stories along the way. One thing I would have liked to have seen however is more acknowledgement and interviews with some of the veterans of the craft (think Mike Stevens)

A good book to accommodate a good movie. As a sign-painter that was formally trained in the 80's, then as an instructor for 16 years, Its great to see a resurgence of hand painted signs and hand lettering. After meeting Faythe and Sam while filming the movie I was super excited that these two, novices to the trade, would pick a interesting and almost dying art.The 2 negatives is I feel there are 1) many, MANY veteran sign painters that paved the way since the 50's, 60's and 70's that didn't even get acknowledgment as those guys were the ones that should have been interviewed or recognized. No Mention of Mike Stevens?.Not the ones that do it as a 'hobby' that just picked up a brush a year ago and are self taught. The great old times were left (out aside from a few.,,Keith, RIP).. The 2nd is there are SO MANY bad examples on 'professional' lettering and sign work throughout that I'm afraid people will try to copy. Bad spacing, bad layout, wrong shading, wrong lettering. ( the cover alone has a few mistakes). I'm glad there is a book to show modern interest, I just wish a bit more research and homework was done prior.

Very Insightful. If you ever wanted to paint signs or had an interest in Typography, it is a calling. Nobody really plans on it, its something you are just drawn to. I enjoyed reading about how the different painters they interviewed got involved in sign painting. So theres some stories and alot of cool pics. As far as books on this subject go, i thought this one felt authentic and its a cross section of people and thier passion for sign painting, and lettering. Its a dying art and its cool to see there are people out there trying to keep it alive and part of true Americana culture.

This is more of a "look what so and so did for the sign painting industry" than actually teaching you anything about learning the trade. Deeply disappointed in this purchase.

So glad someone wrote a book about the art of sign-painting. The book is well-designed and has lots of photos to accompany the bios of the sign-painters. The sign-painting biz tends to be pretty well dominated by men so it was nice to see a couple of women sign-painters featured as well. Thanks Faythe and Sam for making this book. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in hand-painting signs. There are also some great design tips in the appendix that I think would be beneficial to anyone interested in graphic design.

I bought this for a family member who is one of the last true sign painters. He and the craftsmen in this book create some of the most gorgeous sign work out there-- refreshing when almost all you see nowadays are vinyl letters slapped on a sign.A very interesting read with great pictures and interviews. Not just commentary on current practices, but some explanation of why there are so few real sign painters left. Even if you aren't in the trade of sign painting or lettering, it is a good look into a unique trade that I hope never goes extinct.

I had done some research in sign painting in my design courses in school. Time and time again, this book was recommended to quench my interest in the art form. The seller was super friendly and helpful, and the package came in excellent condition. Now I work with a girl whose husband is a professional sign painter; I am passing this book on as a gift now that I have finished it. I highly recommend this book! A very interesting read indeed.

I bought this to supplement materials in my 2nd grade class for teaching solids and liquids. I saw it at a science conference and then went home and bought it online on amazon for much cheaper than it was sold at the conference. Great book, lots of info for my 2nd graders.

This is a great book for discussing density and solutions. The cover makes it seem like it's aimed for younger learners, but the concepts are applicable for grade 4 and up. Difficult concepts are explained in kid-friendly terms, and several investigations are suggested to help students grasp ideas.

I teach a kids' science class for ages 3 - 7. This is not something I would read aloud to 3 -5 year olds – too complex. But, it’s a FABULOUS book for 6 – 9 year olds, especially in a home school setting, where you and your child could actually walk through each of the experiments together. Fun illustrations of a boy, a girl, and a dog, plus the fact that the book is written in second person - addressed to the reader – inviting them to try everything out (“You could have fun guessing which things float…. fill your sink about halfway…”) make this an engaging non-fiction read. Guides kids through a series of observations and experiments with household objects to learn about density.

Have no idea why this book has such high reviews. It is lengthy, it is hard to understand, and the whole book talks about experiments so the whole time kids are distracted by wanting to do the experiments. I really didn't get any factual reasoning from this book either, it basically just restates the title on every page. "Well, some things float and somethings don't". Um, thanks. I could have come to that conclusion on my own. Not a book for my group of kids. Glad it worked for others.

As a science geek I love this book. It definitely is a book that upper elementary - freshman science teachers should incorporate into their unit on density. It does an amazing job of explaining many concepts (density, cubic foot, water displacement, and solutions). It actually walks readers though the scientific method in a fun and easy to understand way. I appreciate the data table and the accuracy of how data tables should be constructed (title, labels, straight lines, hypotheses). Finally the book sets readers up for many mini experiments to try on their own.This would be a great book to have for sharing because there are not many picture books that explain such a large science concept. I think it is important for upper elementary teachers and beyond to realize the role picture books can play in their teaching.

If you are interested in clock making, this is the place to start. I own several Workshop Practice Series books, and each of them does an excellent job of educating the reader in their subject. This book is no exception.The book covers the entire subject of clock making in good detail, and explains all of the basic mechanisms involved. By basic I mean just the parts that are essential to make a clock work. There is no coverage of hour chimes, alarms, or other complications, as they are called. The clocks covered are metal, not wood, although the theory applies.Photos are black and white, but the figures are very easy to read. I would prefer color photos, but that's just aesthetics, as the book is very readable.

Explains the basics of clocks and how to approach making one. A good book to read before getting started. You don't actually make a clock from this book. This is about how a clock works and the process of making one -- the tools required and skills. At the end the author points you toward several available kits and plans for actual clocks to build.

Workshop practice series are all good books. None of them are very expensive, and I'm an engineer but these are written for the dude who doesn't want to think about things but actually wants to build things. ..... Seems to be a British influence in the books, but the Britts/ Scots are good engineers and actually probably better engineers than the famed Germans or Japanese ...and they print in English:) I recommend this whole series.

I have no intention of making a clock - and indeed anyone so interested would need both tools and perhaps more detail, but as an introduction of what goes into clock-making, this is both fascinating and informative. Highly recommended to any like myself with a fascination for clocks!

This book is precisely what it claims to be. I found it helpful in understanding the general nature of making mechanical clocks, which is precisely what I was looking for.
