For a clear and concise introduction to very exciting parts of the world, this is the book! Unlike most children's books, it does not come with illustrations. It comes with photos. Photos very clear and specific to their subject. We see icebergs having broken off from sheets of ice three miles thick, otherwise called the North Pole. We see penguin herds flocking together, standing like men in their regal coats, at the South Pole. What surprised me (and we see a photo of it) is that moss actually grows in the Antarctic. A slice of green life.The prose is very simple, easily readable to or by children. The book itself is small -- less than the standard size. And there's a gorgeous picture on its cover of a tall archway of frozen ice and underneath it float icebergs (four of them) of sparkling white.Oh we get to read about Arctic hares, Arctic foxes and polar bears. And the people who live within the Arctic Circle: the Inuit of Canada and Alaska, the Laplanders of Northern Europe. The book is short -- only 30 pages long. Just enough to take both child and adult on a wondrous journey.

The Top and Bottom of the World is one of the themes I teach each January in my Transitional Kindergarten class. I was so thankful to find the book by Allan Fowler bearing the same title. The photograph illustrations are simple and clear, just right to interest 4-6 year old children. The text too is appropriate for young and older children while being accurate and informative. The vocabulary list at the end is helpful while preparing lesson plans and projects.

When I came across this book, which I did here on amazon, I was very excited, but still unsure of what I would be getting my hands on. So much so that I just received it a couple of weeks ago, and I'm now on my second reading. The book is packed with information. It not only delves into the aspects of Cable Modems and DSL(which is does so very intensely), but also tells you how you can optimize your standard dial-up modem connection to the internet. You can't lose with this book--if you already have an internet connection, the knowledge on getting the most out of THAT hook-up is worth the price of the book. In addition, the author definitely has a sense of humor, and that REALLY helps when you sit down to read a book, and along with educating you, you're also given a dose of humor that's JUST ENOUGH to make the education FUN.The book also gives the reader information on what to do in order to have your computer completely in order BEFORE the installation of a broadband hook-up takes place, whether you do it yourself, or somebody's going to be installing it for you. This book even delves into how computers work, and the processes of computers connecting to one another to put the wheels of the internet into motion. The reader won't be BOGGED down with this, however, as the book is written in a very clear, concise manner. You'll also learn little tricks here and there throughout the book on how to maintain your computer for overall optimal performace. What a great book--I couldn't recommend it more highly!

Working in the IT field, I found this book to be very helpful-- especially from a historical perspective--explaining the various highspeed options available. I read this, although I have been trouble-shooting highspeed issues on a helpdesk, for a long time. When studying for Network +, I read references about T1 lines, and other methods of highspeed access that I have never used, personally, or only used in a corporate office invironment, as a User.This book explains all the (mostly out-dated, in heavily populated areas) technologies, and helps to grasp the basics when studying for the Network+ certification.

I have read some of Mark Soper's works in the past (Upgrading and Repairing PCs Technician's Portable Reference, his articles in SmartComputing, etc.) and have always found them informative and relevent to my purposes. This book is no different. Soper presents broadband technology in a way that is both extremly detailed and easy to understand. It is humorous and very readable, qualities not often found in computer books. Yet it covers the topics (ISDN, DirectPC/Duo, DSL, Cable, etc) throughly and doesn't skimp on any vital detail. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who is considering broadband service, anyone who has it already, or just anyone who enjoys learning about emerging technologies.

I have read some of Mark Soper's work before (Upgrading and Repairing PCs, SmartComputing, etc.) and have always found it to informative and relevant to what I needed. This book is no exception. Incredibly readable and humorous for a computer book, it provides an excellent balance between technical detail and practical knowledge. Easy to understand and yet packed with information, this is a must have book for anyone even slightly interested in high-speed Internet access. I recommend this book to anyone who is considering broadband, anyone who already has it, or just anyone who enjoys emerging technologies.

About the Author

Sharon M. Ravitch, Ph.D. is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education where she is Research Co-Director at the Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives and a Founding Co-Director of Penn’s Inter-American Educational Leadership Network. She serves as the Principal Investigator of Semillas Digitales (Digital Seeds) a multi-year applied development research initiative in Nicaragua (http://www2.gse.upenn.edu/nicaragua/). Ravitch’s research integrates across the fields of qualitative research, education, applied development, cultural anthropology, and human development and has four main strands: (1) Practitioner Research as a means to engendering sustainable professional and institutional development and innovation; (2) International applied development research that works from participatory and action research approaches (projects currently in the US, Nicaragua, and India); (3) Ethnographic and participatory evaluation research; and (4) Leader education and professional development. Ravitch has published three books: Reason and Rigor: How Conceptual Frameworks Guide Research (with Matthew Riggan, Sage Publications, 2012); School Counseling Principles: Diversity and Multiculturalism (American School Counselor Association Press, 2006) and Matters of Interpretation: Reciprocal Transformation in Therapeutic and Developmental Relationships with Youth (with Michael Nakkula, Jossey-Bass, 1998). Ravitch earned two master’s degrees from Harvard University in Human Development and Psychology and in Education and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in an interdisciplinary program that combined anthropology, sociology, and education.Â

I keep this book on my shelf and refer to it often as I seek to frame my thinking around a particular theme. It's one of those resources you don't appreciate in its full form, but learn to value as you confront particular issues/problems that require deeper reflection. Lots of great frameworks and exercises to draw on. Probably less valuable for a Master's student, but definitely a resource for a doctoral student struggling to wade more deeply into the pool of research.

As a new and aspiring qualitative researcher, this book was exactly what I needed. It gave me concrete steps and examples of how to engage in meaningful research. What's also amazing about the book is that it's useful to new, experienced and seasoned researchers. I still refer to this book as I continue doing qualitative research.

I have used Ravitch and Carl in my doctoral-level qualitative research methods course, and my students found the book very helpful and accessible. They found the book particularly helpful in understanding and developing conceptual frameworks. I highly recommend this book.

This book has a wealth of information! It was a constant companion while writing my dissertation. Follow the advice in this book and you will have a clear roadmap for your research study.

Great book great professor. Sharon Ravitch is my qualitative methods professor in the executive doctorate program at Penn. In person, and in the book, she has the ability to explain and make relevant very complex methodologies and methods around qualitative research.
