Those who have younger children should see this short essay as a manual for parenthood, how to engage younger beings in nature and borrow from them the sense of wonder that most of us lose by the time we are teenagers. Rachel Carson learns as much from her grand nephew Roger as he does when they wander through the forests of Maine, walk its shores or stare into the sky at night. Rachel Carson is not interested in seeing if Roger will learn to identify flowers and crabs but in seeing them and feeling them through an emotional connection that we all have the capacity to develop if we stop and really look around.

Beautiful book, and the unfinished legacy of Rachel Carson - not on environment, but on child development. How do we help children care for our common home? ... You help them develop a sense ow "wonder" first ... help them notice the small things, marvel at the most insignificant beautiful things in nature - from a sense of wonder comes a sense of appreciation ... then care ... then a fundamental sense of wholeness and worth. Who knew that Carson is such an insightful parent. (Indeed, Carson became parent to her niece's son ... and this book, originally an article, was dedicated to that little boy.)

This short and insightful writing by Rachel Carson.is a pioneering work on the value human connection with nature. It has been a guiding light in my horticultural therapy work for decades. The sense of wonder she speaks of can make a dynamic difference in not only every child but for individuals with developmental, physical, mental and emotional challenges, including those with of us with depression or dementia, including Alzheimer's. She describes a walk in nature as a journey of discover. This sparks the imagination and creativity. Strongly recommend this book to anyone seeking an escape from stress, or simply seeking a place to share discoveries with another human being. Any hospital healing garden, botanical garden or backyard can become a place to experience the sense of wonder she so vividly describes.

This is a timeless treasure. I discovered it when my own children were small and I was teaching Kindergarten. Rachel Carson's words and the photos were an inspiration for providing the opportunities for my own children and my students discover the world around them. My own son just became a parent! I wanted to pass on this beautiful book in the hopes that my little grandson will learn to look carefully at the big world that he is now part of!

This is a beautiful book for parents or grandparents or anyone who loves nature. It is a collection of Rachel Carson's essays inspired by exploring the outdoors with her young nephew. Nick Kelsh's color photographs are a bonus enhancement. It would be a lovely coffee table book or perfect book to leave in your guest bedroom. We all need the sense of wonder.

One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Teaches what is truly important.. I give it as a gift wherever I can.

This is a wonderful book about children and nature, but more deeply, about maintaining for yourself and the others in your life the delight, suprise and awe one feels when seeing things as a child does for the first time - a sense of wonder. It is written in lovely prose that really creates the feeling that you are being made privy to the spontaneous thoughts of the author as she traversed the natural world with her little nephew. The photographs are beautiful renderings of found still lives and landscapes, well-photographed by Nick Kelsh. I did think that the prints of the photographs were a little lurid in spots, but it doesn't distract too much from the beauty of the overall product. This book was written by Rachel Carson before she died, and never truly finished. There is an older version of this book, again, with photographs that "Rachel Carson would have wanted" and it's interesting to compare the two. I recommend this book highly for anyone who loves children and nature, and values the powers of observation of the world around them.

This is a lovely, easy read with meaning that can and should be life-changing. It should be required reading for those who write curriculum and publish mandates for education... and environmental policy.
