Dictionary of Islamic Architecture

From Library Journal

This resource provides an alphabetically arranged overview of the history of Islamic architecture. It consists of hundreds of entries focusing on geographical, archaeological, historical, and architectural terminology (from many languages). Every entry begins with a simple, one-sentence definition (for some technical terms there is no further explanation); most then continue with an expanded explanation from one paragraph to multiple pages in length. Many of the longer entries also include limited "Further reading" lists and "See also" references to other terms. Accompanying most entries are illustrations in the form of photographs, plans, maps, and drawings: these are especially effective when discussing architectural details unique to Islamic buildings. Critics may question the selection of entries on specific monuments, the paucity of information on modern developments, and the lack of a detailed index. However, considering its well-illustrated broad coverage of the subject and inclusion of the non-Arab Islamic world, this volume will prove an invaluable addition to any library with an interest in architecture or Islamic studies. "Dictionary of Islamic Architecture" by Andrew Petersen (1996, 1999), paperback, 342 pgs, illustrated, MANY b/w photos & illus. but no color pix. MANY illustrations w/ text regarding all Muslim (and formerly occupied - i.e. Spain) countries & cities of many different mosques (with floor plans). Sadly, very weak on explicit terminology of Arabic architecture-design words. I was hoping that there would be Arabic words for trowel, brick, flying buttress or column, etc. - but no. Perhaps this book is really too generic; it tries to discuss a little about Islamic architect in all Muslim countries, but it fails to go into much detail for most Asian countries. This book seems more to be an `encyclopedia' rather than a `dictionary' regarding Islamic Architecture. More for the Islamic architect historian than daily user. Wish it wasn't so pricey.
