Review

"Winner of the 2009 Walter P. Kistler Award, The Foundation For the Future""One of The Australian's Best Books of 2009""Selected to appear on ClimateUnited's Booklist of Top Books on Climate Change""Worried about warming but confused about carbon? Try [The Long Thaw], which tells you nearly everything you need to know with down-to-earth clarity and brevity."---Evan Hadingham, PBS's NOVA blog"Archer . . . presents the dire and long-lasting consequences of our fossil-fuel dependency but concludes that it's not too late for us to go a different, better way."---Avital Binshtock, Sierra Club Blog"Archer has perfectly pitched answers to the most basic questions about global warming while providing a sound basis for understanding the complex issues frequently misrepresented by global warming skeptics. With a breezy, conversational style, he breaks complex concepts into everyday analogies. Divided into three parts--the Present, the Past and the Future--Archer provides a complete picture of climate change now, in the past, and what we can expect in years and centuries to come. His models, though conservative, imply that humans won't survive the environmental consequences of severe warming over the next thousand years. While Archer is neither grim nor pessimistic, he is forthright about what's at stake, and what must do to avert catastrophe." (Publishers Weekly)"It is comprehensive, well written and includes numerous useful vignettes from climate history. Archer leads the reader to a simple yet accurate picture of climate changes, ranging from geological time scales to current warming, ice ages and prospects for the future."---Susan Solomon, Nature"The Long Thaw is written for anyone who wishes to know what cutting-edge science tells us about the modern issue of global warming and its effects on the pathways of atmospheric chemistry, as well as global and regional temperatures, rainfall, sea level, Arctic sea-ice coverage, melting of the continental ice sheets, cyclonic storm frequency and intensity and ocean acidification. This book will also appeal to scientists who want a clear and unbiased picture of the global-warming problem and how it may progress in the future. It encapsulates Archer's own efforts in the field of climate research, which I found invaluable."---Fred T. Mackenzie, Nature Geoscience"The power of Archer's book is to show that such [climate] changes, which we can bring about through just a few centuries of partying on carbon, can only be matched by the earth itself over vastly longer periods. . . . It's the kind of perspective we need in order to realize how insane we're being."---Chris Mooney, American Prospect"Global climate change is the subject of thousands of books; this short volume is distinctive in multiple ways. Archer is a geophysicist (and a look-alike--except for stubble--for late British actor David Niven), whose scientific background lets him place climate change in the context of its variations in geological history. He points out that the Earth's orbital cycles had poised it to enter a new ice age when human influences began to override natural forces."---F.T. Manheim, Choice

From the Back Cover

"In this short book, David Archer gives us the latest on climate change research, and skillfully tells the climate story that he helped to discover: generations beyond our grandchildren's grandchildren will inherit atmospheric changes and an altered climate as a result of our current decisions about fossil-fuel burning. Not only are massive climate changes coming if we humans continue on our current path, but many of these changes will last for millennia. To make predictions about the future, we rely on research into the deep past, and Archer is at the forefront of this field: paleoclimatology. This is the book for anyone who wishes to really understand what cutting-edge science tells us about the effects we are having, and will have, on our future climate."--Richard B. Alley, Pennsylvania State University"This is the best book about carbon dioxide and climate change that I have read. David Archer knows what he is talking about."--James Hansen, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies"Books on climate change tend to focus on what is expected to happen this century, which will certainly be large, but they often neglect the even larger changes expected to take place over many centuries. The Long Thaw looks at climate effects beyond the twenty-first century, and its focus on the long-term carbon cycle, rather than just climate change, is unique."--Jeffrey T. Kiehl, National Center for Atmospheric Research"A great book. What sets it apart is that it expands the discussion of the impacts of global warming beyond the next century and convincingly describes the effects that are projected for the next few thousand years. What also sets it apart is how deeply it takes general readers into the scientific issues of global warming by using straightforward explanations of often complex ideas."--Peter J. Fawcett, University of New Mexico

This is a very well written book from an Oceanographer’s perspective. Archer does an excellent job of keeping political and alternative energy solutions out of his argument and instead focuses on the science of the climate change issue. I wouldn’t recommend this to someone who is trying to get into the specific details about climate change, but this is a great piece for someone who is interested in knowing more than “it’s getting hotter outside so there must be global warming”.Archer divides the book into 3 categories, present, past and future. The present conversation gives you a snapshot at the current situation. Archer again keeps his arguments on point and is able to give information that is relevant and most sought after in the climate change argument. The past portion of the book is also well done by giving a historical picture of the how the Earth goes through various cooling and warming cycles. Most of this portion gives the reader an understanding as to why climate change is such a difficult topic and how it is not a yes or no question. The future portion of the book is also very telling in that there are so many different possibilities of what could happen. But from Archer’s perspective the ocean will be able to dictate how climate will change either warming or cooling.Overall I thought this was a well-written book. Because of the nature of climate change, it is already close to being obsolete but it is interesting to see how the climate change debate has changed in a few short years. I would have liked to see more of the science behind the findings because that can help the reader fully understand the argument. There were a few other errors made that have been pointed out by other reviewers, but overall a well-written book that would be a great addition to any climate change library.

The first thing you will notice upon receiving this book is how small it is. It is almost a pamphlet. However, in spite of that, it is packed full of interesting observations. By now, I have read stacks of books on global warming, and in many ways, this one follows the same general plot line as most of them. The author of this book is an expert on oceanography and as such, the best parts of the book are the ones that draw from that field of study. The author divides the book up into different sections that look at the past history of the planet as well as the prospects for the future and while he does bring a lot of his own expertise in, he also draws on research from other disciplines. In many ways, this book fits the vein of recent books on the topic of global warming in that it acknowledges both that contributions to warming are proceeding apace and that predictions for things like sea level rise have probably been underestimated. In other words, he shares in some of the resignation that other experts have begun to allow to creep into their books. The only knock I have against the book is that here and there, he plays a bit loose with terminology or characterizations of things like evolution and these could be seized upon by science deniers to claim the author isn't very good. However, when talking about actual climate issues, he seems to be on top of the latest research and makes excellent observations. As can be seen from the title, the overriding theme of the book is how current practices are putting into place effects that will probably last many thousands of years. While other books have pointed out the idea that current man-made global warming may be putting off the next ice age, few authors have explored the idea in as much depth and clarity as this one. He does an excellent job of putting the current situation into the context of both long-term trends and the normal factors that cause climate variation to show what the current situation is likely to lead to. This in and of itself is almost worth the price of the book. In relatively few pages, the author is able to put to lie the cottage industry of climate denial that often focuses on wrongheaded claims about natural causes for climate variation. If you are interested in the topic of global warming and would like an interesting and easy-to-read book by by someone who is an expert in a discipline related to climatology, this is an excellent choice.

At first blush, this is another in a long line of books written to introduce people to the concepts of global climate change. It covers many of the basics and includes information such as how models work, how scientists discover past climate information and what will happen on Earth as the climate warms. The twist with this book is that it goes out for thousands of years and explains why we have to worry about climate change for thousands of years. The vast majority of books take us through this century, and maybe slightly into the next century, but very few look hundreds of centuries into the future. This is generally well written, although a little repetitive at times and presents a different look at climate change.

We have all seen the projections for the current century, which generally don't affect property values beyond the beachfront. If you don't have children or close relatives, that is all that matters to your genes. Otherwise the long term matters a great deal. Global warming ranks with nuclear war and asteroid impact as likely terminators for our species within a millenium, and the only one for which prevention has additional quality of life benefits. That said, the presentation is a bit confusing. The various past events, the evidence for them, and their significance are scattered through the book in a confusing order. There is also an error in the final paragraph -- a gallon of gasoline yields about 31,000 kilocalories, not 2500 -- so its ratio of warming to useful work is ONLY 3 million rather than 40 million. And of course the emphasis on effects leaves little space for the evidence AGW, which is readily available elsewhere.Back to the plus side, the book is compact (less energy both to produce and to read) and the evidence is consistent with the conclusions.BTW, the latest models in the book indicate no ice age in 50K years even without AGW.

I was looking for a layman's explanation of dark matter and dark energy, and this came up on the search. This is actually more of an historic review of the science involved than the actual science, but it is a well written book that gives a good foundation.

Very easy reading and no formulas cloud the reader. I highly recommend this book for the pay person who wants to learn about modern cosmology.

Physics explained for the average person. Nice historical background info included, Very interesting and enjoyable reading. Personally, I would recommend.

Reading by this book, I found myself arguing against the arguments brought forth in some of the chapters, but it was the final chapter on cosmology that I 'got it', what the author was trying to get at, the true state-of-mind one should have as a scientist or researcher. My only criticism was the delving into the personal histories of the contributing scholars and scientists in each topical chapter (much I already knew from reading other scientific concepts books), but I understand why the author included them. All in all, a most enjoyable read.

Over the years I have followed the evolution of cosmology from Fred Hoyle's "continuous creation" theory until the present. As observation ability and very smart modern thinkers has dramatically to allowed new theories to develop and old ones to fade to quaint ideas, there seems to no upper limit to completely understanding how our universe started and when and if it will end - and what all it consists of. Stuart Clark offers a refreshing summary of what we think we know now and the long history of our learning to parent day concepts. Some of the material in this book requires a bit more reading to wrap your mind around such concepts as parallel universes but for the most part, current (and past) theories are well explained for even the casual reader without a foundation in physics and cosmology.A sprinkle of humor here and there adds to the enjoyment as you journey through a fascinating history of early far thinking people that, based on then-available knowledge and observations, came up with reasonably sound ideas of our physical universe. Modern science continues to mold our knowledge as more discoveries are made and more mysteries (e.g., dark matter and dark matter) portend further excitement ahead. Stuart Clark has written a fine piece to explain where we have been and where to aim next. Great reading. I hope to see future offerings by Mr. Clark.

Engaging, well-written book, with a balanced view of the state of modern cosmology. Makes you want to go back to school and get a PhD in physics!

Very interesting book written for laymen.

Reading this material provides the reader with the opportunity to think deeply on our ideas of reality.

This was a beautiful story of hard work and determination and perseverance in the face of evil and overwhelming adversity and hardships. I have not read a book in a very long time that motivated me to care deeply about global issues, but this book stirred in me a desire to help others. At the beginning of the book, it was a bit confusing trying to understand how the two stories connected. But by the end of the book, the way that the author weaves the two stories of Nya and Salva together is incredibly powerful and moving. The author writes beautifully, using vivid imagery and robust descriptions that make the characters and situations easy to relate to even though most of us have never had to experience such hardships. The author was careful not to be too graphic in his storytelling which helps to make this story accessible to both younger and older readers. This story teaches lessons of compassion and perseverance and courage. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. It provides an incredible perspective on the definition of a hard life and is an inspirational read.

This was for my 7th grade son was assigned to read in school. This was the first book my son had ever finished, talked about and even read note than he was assigned to do. My son is dyslexic which makes reading a book laborious or even impossible. I bought the feature that reads it to him which he loved and made it more interesting since they had music and the reader used different voices for each character. It also highlighted the words as it read and for words that are hard it give the definition. Amazing it opens up a whole new world for struggling readers.

In 2008 Nya has to walk a super long distance to get water for her family. Salva who is a refugee during the 1985 war has to make a long journey to find safety. Life is hard for them both in Sudan. The stories are 25 years apart but the book talks about how their stories intersect. It is good for grades 3+,age 8+ and family and also people who like historical fiction. It is also good to learn about the importance of water. It saves lives, helps people, and brings us together by giving water to help them to lead a good life. I recommend this book because it has good examples of leadership. It is so different than any other book I have read. It is the kind of book that sucks you in then you slow down to savor it.

My grandson read the book then told his mom and me about it; asked us to read it. Very seldom does he do that but this touched him enough to cause him to speak up about it. The story was simple and presented the hardships encounted around such a basic human need - water. By also lightly describing the impact of war and other dangers in the area, a child would be exposed to this information. Questions are raised that allow parent-child interaction and help to teach our children to be socially aware and that you can have an impact on the lives of others as Salva Dut did/does. A simple well to supply water for lives and the social, educational, and economical changes that result when there is access to a good, clean, abundant supply. Excellent.

I read this aloud to my Chinese born, American raised kids and amidst the grumbling over "Mom's teaching us again", came a sudden moment of silence, and then "Mom, please read, ". And then the conversations started. This is a beautifully told story, at times horrifying sad, but it's one that our privileged American tweens need to hear. The parallel story lines are fascinating, and the understanding of tribal cultures and each child's place in their tribe are fascinating. We will pay it forward by donating to Salva's nonprofit organization. What an amazing accomplishment. Thank you.

I decided to read this book after I finished reading another book written by Linda Park (See Saw Girl). As a 5th grade reading teacher, I sometimes struggle with my recommendations for interesting historical fiction/non-fiction selections - most especially when recommending to my students who typically aren't interested in those two genres.I found See Saw girl to be a very quick read with "friendly" writing for those who just aren't into history. It'll be my book to "hook" them into the genre. A Long Walk to Water, in my personal opinion, would be the next step up for these students because of the way in which the author chose to write the story. The story is told in first-person narrative by two different characters AND the story takes place during two different periods of time in Sudan. The two stories flip back and forth with each chapter. Never did I find the two stories confusing or difficult to keep up with.SALVA is a Sudan boy who, when gunfire breaks out while he's at school, is forced to go on the run due to the civil war - leaving his family behind. The story focuses on the heart wrenching details of his journey.Nya is a young girl whose story takes place several years after that of Salva. Also a child living in Sudan, Nya's job is to make a very long, daily (sometimes more than once) journey to fetch water for their family. All the time I was reading, I knew that at some point Salva and Nya's lives and/or story would intersect. And, in the end, it did! But it wasn't until the very end was I able to figure out how their life story would intersect.Although the challenges these two characters face will pull at your heart strings, the author has put in just enough detail without being too graphic for young readers. This is a beautiful story that definitely deserves its place on my classroom bookshelf. I cannot wait to share it with all my students. And, I'm anxious to read another book by Linda Park.

I just lead a 5th and 6th grade language arts class through a unit on this book. We all enjoyed the material. The topics are intense, but presented in an approachable way. The vocabulary is easy for most readers to understand. It is short enough that challenged readers are not scared away.

Review

It is Sanouillet's exhaustive approach and painstaking attention to detail, coupled with the obvious pleasure he gained from his research that makes this excellent translation a must for any Dada fan who has not read it in the original language.―The Art Newspaper

Review

An illuminating account of the ragged emergence and decline of Dada in the Parisian literary world, and the volatility of the human relationships behind the magazines 391, Dada, and Literature in particular.―Clive Phillpot, freelance writer and curator, and former art librarianTzara famously declared that 'Dada is not modern'; Michel Sanouillet's history of its most fruitful and tumultuous years is for its part timeless. This classic study takes its place alongside Hans Richter's Dada: Art and Anti-Art and Robert Motherwell's The Dada Painters and Poets as an indispensable reference for any serious Dada-watcher. The lengthy appendix of correspondence alone is worth the price of admission but Dada in Paris offers much more than that: having sifted through mountains of unpublished and archival documents Sanouillet has crafted a detailed nuanced astute and even (appropriately) humorous account of Dada's migration to France, its guerrilla blitz against the status quo, and its formative impact on decades of intellectual life. The French edition of Dada in Paris has well withstood the test of time; its publication in English arrives not a moment too soon.―Mark Polizzotti, author of Revolution of the Mind: The Life of Andre BretonSanouillet's Dada in Paris is rigorous history while managing to be simultaneously voluptuous like a bath and thrilling like a tabloid. The enormous research and detailed scholarship of Dada's crucial Paris years unfolds here with a joie-de-vivre possible only by having an artist-in-residence, a feat that Sanouillet accomplishes with grace and verve. Short of having experienced 1921 in Paris at the side of Tristan Tzara, I can't think of better company than this dream-inducing thriller, document, and love fest. Like Dada itself, Sanouillet married incompatibles and created a text that resounds with the urgent concerns of the twenty-first century. Dada's timeless time beats are impossible to ignore now.―Andrei Codrescu, author of The Posthuman Dada Guide: Tzara and Lenin Play Chess

#1,728,193 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The absolutely indispensable book on this topic, though very scholarly and perhaps not for the beginner seeking an introduction to Dada. A big bonus is the transcribed contemporary correspondence of all the key players...Tzara, Picabia, Breton and many more, in a large appendix comprising a third of the book. Voluminous notes further enlighten with exacting detail, and an exhaustive bibliography includes nearly every title of interest on Dada, plus all the cited journals of the period. I only wish there was a section of plates -- documentary photographs, images of the journals, artworks discussed, etc...though of course Google can bring these up fairly easily in most cases. The bibliography also includes web sites with pertinent images and info for further exploration.

.......You'd think funny Dada annecdotes would be 10 a penny, but this dry, dull slog through the various exhibits and pamphlets of long ago offers up not a single smile. It's a reprint of an older text and big news for boring scholar types to finally be able to get this translated from the orginal french. But general art history fans will feel fairly tortured.Love the cover, though.
