About the Author

George M. Cole, PhD, PE, PLS, is a practicing surveyor whose assignments have ranged from surveying remote areas of the Arctic to participating in the first worldwide satellite geodesy program. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Tulane University and a master of science degree and doctorate from Florida State University. In addition to authoring PPI’s Fundamentals of Surveying Practice Exam and the Principles and Practice of Surveying Practice Exam, Dr. Cole has contributed articles to Point of Beginning magazine and published a guide to the legal and technical aspects of water boundaries. He has recently served as a visiting professor of surveying at the University of Puerto Rico and currently teaches at Florida State University.

I am currently in school working towards obtaining an SIT and eventually an RPLS.I have only covered 50% of the book at this time but so far here are the things I like about it:1) Allows the students to progress from simpler methodologies to more difficult math topics.2) Shows how problems can be solved and provides all answers.Issues:1) Some topics/ chapters are not covered in the order they should be but if the student takes these suggestions, they will be less confused.Ch.4 (or systems of units) should be covered before Ch 3 (unit conversions)Ch. 9 (rectangular coordinate systems) should be covered before Ch. 8 TrigonometryCh 10(analytical geometry) should be covered right after Ch 2 (basic geometry)Big Issue:Make sure you read ch 15-5, (azimuth) BEFORE you start Ch 14-3 (compass survey) since you will need to know how to calculate azimuths before solving the problems in ch 14. I can't believe the editor didn't catch this one but it confused me until I read ahead and learned how to solve problems in ch14 by doing the work in ch 15.Overall, it's an good and educational book but the editing of chapter order needs to be looked at.I hope the author reads this review since I am truly wanting other future geomaticians like myself to be successful.Thanks!

Used this for the CA PE Surveying Exam; great reference!

Hard to find a better resource for studying for the FS and PS Exams. Pricey but what's your time worth?

Must have for the FS and PS exams. Easy to read and detail solutions to common problems.

This book is full of useful info. Each chapter is very detailed and offers several examples of each topic. Great reference for the SIT.

I was very Happy with my book purchase, and the ease,of the Amazon shopping experience (1st time user ).
