King Hammurabi of Babylon: A Biography

Review

“Van De Mieroop evokes vividly Hammurabi’s rise from one King among many to Lord of a territory stretching from the Gulf into Syria …. He succeeds in delineating Hammurabi’s remarkable achievements and providing glimpses of his personality.” Amelie Kuhrt, University College London "In an age that featured aggressive militarism and shaky thrones, Hammurabi of Babylon forged clever alliances and practiced patient strategies. In these accessible and well-turned pages, Marc Van De Mieroop explains how Hammurabi created an empire through martial and administrative talents. But he also details another of Hammurabi's major achievements: sponsoring a law code that places him, along with Moses, as one of antiquity's greatest lawgivers. I recommend this book to one and all." Jack M. Sasson, Vanderbilt University "Marc Van De Mieroop brings to history a flair for a story....Mieroop has delivered a readable history of a time strangely familiar as we watch modern Iraqis working towards hopefully, a similarly benign relationship." Insights "This is an excellent book, also easily accessible for the uninitiated. It provides authoritative information on a ruler who was a conqueror, the ancient lawgiver ... One can only look forward to the future volumes in the series on the lives of great men and women of ancient times." Scholia Reviews "Insofar as it is possible to write Hammurabi's story, Van De Mieroop has done so. Based as it is on a thorough knowledge of both long-known and recently published evidence, a solid acquaintance with the most up-to-date scholarship, and a historian's awareness of the varying reliability of the ancient sources, this book is an excellent account of a fascinating ruler, and as near to biography as one is going to get." Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies

This book presents the first biography written in English of the famous Babylonian lawgiver, King Hammurabi, who ruled from 1792 to 1750 BC. It presents a well-rounded view of this ancient Mesopotamian king's accomplishments, by drawing on the extensive writings of his time, including those by Hammurabi himself. Numerous letters and reports by ambassadors to his court and others are presented in translation.Marc Van De Mieroop traces Hammurabi's career as a diplomat and conqueror, describing how he dealt with powerful rivals and extended his kingdom to create the large state of Babylon. He explores the administration of the kingdom and looks at the legacies of Hammurabi's rule, especially his legal code, the earliest complete body of legal instructions in world history. The book demonstrates how Hammurabi's conquests irrevocably changed the political organization of the Middle East and shows that Hammurabi was long remembered by the ancient Mesopotamians as one of the greatest kings of the past.

American historian of the ancient history of the Middle East wrote a book entitled ''King Hammurabi of Babylon: A biography'' where he reconstructed the life and reign of Hammurabi - the famous lawgiver and the king of Babylon. This is a work of the mature historian who knows his craft and its different limitations. One has to admit that this book is very well written and one reads its text with the pleasure. Author decided to keep the chronological order of narration in his work constructing a very decent biography interspersed with properly chosen quotations from the original clay tablets excavated in the land of ancient Mesopotamia.Hammurabi whose famous code of laws is actually the set of royal verdicts/recommendations in case of this and this happens appears to be very energetic, smart and canny diplomat as well as a thrifty ruler who was really taking care of his possessions he greatly expanded during the second part of his reign and his subjects. Fact that were taking place during his long reign greatly confirm his sills as a ruler, because he started as a king of small state in the politically divided Mesopotamia that was politically dependent of the will of the powerful king of Elam ending up as an independent sovereign of entire land. Initially as a ruler of small country Hammurabi was acting sparingly pursuing a very cautious international policy that was allowing him balancing between acting powers of the region. When the political situation changed rapidly Hammurabi attacked like a crouching tiger being additionally equipped with diplomatic alliances with other city-states rulers. Within circa four years he conquered new lands founding a new large country. It is worth mentioning that Hammurabi acquired eventually also the possessions of his previous allies. Documents that have survived till our times allow us to follow how king Hammurabi was acting as an administrator. Available sources depict him as a strict, demanding, but very efficient administrator of his rapidly expanded kingdom. He was awarding his good servants and punishing disobedient rebels against his rule.As a good complement to this book one should also read the ''Cuneiform texts and the writing of history'' by the same authors to properly understand the type of problems and limitations historians of Mesopotamia encounter in their daily work, while working with clay tablets. To sum up one has to state that this book does not contain dated info like it happens even in case of a very popular as well as very fundamental study by Georges Roux (1914 - 1999) entitled ''Mesopotamia'' (published under English title as ''Ancient Iraq''). This old book can be regarded still as a great survey of all known Mesopotamian states and their societies. Despite the fact that this book contains some dated info. For instance author claims that people who were sacrificed in the ''royal tombs of Ur'' died ''painless death'' what suggests poisoning before being buried together with their lords, but recent investigations of their remains revealed traces of boiling and skulls damages. In spite of all it is still great general book on this civilization we all owe much.

While the topic, for some, might seem a bit narrow the influence of Hammurabi on the history of the ancient Near East was significant enough to merit Van De Mieroop's book. He carefully works through the early environment and rise of Hammurabi as well as his powerful rule and widespread influence. The author gleans much of his material from the rich corpus of letters from Mari as well as other documents, especially the prolog and epilogue of his famous legal stela. Van De Mieroop handles the source material well and provides an effective history of this significant ancient Near Eastern ruler providing a different kind of glimpse into the beginnings of the Old Babylonian empire. His endorsement of later memories that this ruler was accomplished is well chronicled but his seeming endorsement of Hammurabi as "just" appears to be at odd with his treatment of the way he built his empire. Van De Mieroop's book is insightful, well written and I recommend it for the generalist as well as those interested in the history of the ancient Near East.

I willy njoyed reading this book

This is a great biography of an important king of ancient Mesopotamia. The book puts into a historical context the life and times of the King who created the famous "Law Code of Hammurabi". If you are interested in the ancient history of a region unfamiliar to most people, I would recomend this book.
