I really wanted to like this book. It was somewhat helpful, but is too narrative and expert opinion dominates way too much. Their discussion of the ARDS protocol as a "fanatical religion" is weak, and provides no context, and hilariously minimizes further whatever little benefit the protocol provides (agree that this is the case but understanding the concept of high PEEP/low tidal volume is key for trainees in 2015), immediately following with a personal opinion posted as high quality evidence. Other chapters were more helpful. I unfortunately put this one in the "optional" stack. I hope the next edition makes some progress.

Wonderful book for beginning in the ICU. It does a great job on introducing common clinical scenarios in the CVICU. Good foundation resource.

What a wonderful collection of apparativos! The book of the summer has lead me to a collect and try as many as is humanly possible. See what a delicious collection the authors have lead me to create! Almost all of the drinks are easily made (with a few hard-to-find ingredients notwithstanding), incredibly tasty, very low alcohol and fairly low calorie - they pack a refreshing punch at lunch and through the afternoon and evening. My favorite uses one of the oldest (possibly, the oldest) apparativo Salers - made with Gentian root, it is outstanding when pared with cucumber, salt, white vermouth, lime, and soda/seltzer. Only 3/4 oz of Salers and 3/4 oz of vermouth make for a delicious adult refresher on a hot day.

I am not much of a drinker, in all honesty. For me, a nice cocktail is more theory than reality. I like a drink that is not sweet, not high alcohol, a bit fruity, a bit celebratory, even on an ordinary day. Spritzes totally fill the bill, and this book really delivers on drinks that are light, refreshing, unique, and interesting. My favorite thus far is the Taracco Spritz, which has become our spring house drink. Cheers!

This is a great, compact, well-designed book. In addition to cocktails there are a bunch of recipes for Italian aperitivos (little bar snacks, similar to tapas). Just got this book the other day, but I've already gone to the liquor store so I can try some of the more interesting cocktail recipes. Also really like how the book describes the spritz/aperitif sub-cultures of northern Italy. If/when I make it back I'm definitely using this book as a guideLooking forward to warmer weather so I can throw a spritz-inspired party.

This is the cutest coffee table book. My signature drink at my wedding was an Aperol Spritz so when I saw this book at Antropologie, I knew I needed it for my new apartment. I checked Amazon and the price here was way better than Anthropologie's (no surprise there).Aesthetically, the book's quality is way better than I expected. The cover has a cool matte vintage-like texture, as do the pages, which are very thick and sturdy. The photos are absolutely gorgeous- they're art-print quality and I would pull them out and frame them if I didn't love the book itself so much. There is also a cool mix of mid century modern style illustrations in a warm, somewhat masculine palette of colors.The writing is simple and the stories interesting. The recipes are the perfect mix of classic, modern, and DIY. It may not be a book I turn to often for recipes except occasionally in advance of a dinner party, but it's one I'm so happy to have in my collection and love leafing through when I notice it on my side table.

It would’ve been nice to get some more history or at least some better explanations of the flavor profiles on each amaro used. The kindle version isn’t great at all. Each recipe is in two different places for some reason. Over all a d cent read to get some recipe ideas, but we all know that’s easy to get online. Wished for more substance.

Great book - very informative and enjoyable. I only wish that we could get all the fantastic liquors that are mentioned in the recipes. They aren't all available in MA that I've been able to find.

I'm a fan of the Aperol Spritz and am happy to have this engaging history of the drink as well as so many new inventive recipes for variations on the spritz theme, as well as a few aperitivo food recipes to go along with it.

Fun to read, fun to make...all recipes are easy to understand although I maybe not be able to get the same booze for some of them, but heck, I improvise....no problem.

2019 version uses some of the most esoteric verses from the bible and very few of them meaningful or uplifting. Now having gone through two months of winter, this calendar has worsen my winter blues!

Just a bunch of random verses without context. Not specifically wise sayings or proverbs or things that can be seen as wisdom without their surrounding verses. Not recommended.

It was difficult to find a calendar with beautiful photography and NIV verses. This one fit the bill. The quality is good, the pages seem glued on well and aren't too thin.

While the photos are beautiful, the verse selection is poor at best and many are taken out of context. For example: "Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." Acts 17:11 or "When Hezekiah and his officials came and saw the heaps, they praised the Lord and blessed his people Israel." 2 Chron. 31:8There were very few days that actually spoke to me or encouraged me as I had hoped for. There are SO many unbelievable Bible verses that would do just that, yet this calendar included very few. I wanted to love this calendar but after 2+ months, I opted to leaf through the whole year and rip out the few that actually spoke to me and pin them on my bulletin board while throwing out the rest of the calendar.The photographs are pretty but that's not enough to save this calendar.

I'm giving this three stars because, depending on what you're expecting it deserves either 5 or 0.If you are a relatively accomplished pianist with an understanding of theory, command of scales etc. this is an excellent compendium of jazz knowledge. Even so, it's more of a guide book than an actual method. For example, it might ht take months to digest and apply what's in the first chapter.If you're a relative beginner and want a book to get you started playing jazz piano, I would not advise. This book assumes you have a lot of knowledge already.This is not a method book by traditional definitions. As a piano teacher, I define a method as having short, easily digestible modules delivering information and giving you songs to practice those skills. This book delivers the information densely, then turns you loose to practice, more or less on your own. As an analogy, imagine a book on woodworking explaining how to make various joints, then instructing: "Okay, go build a bookcase, two desks and three china cabinets."All that said, if you do want to get serious about jazz piano, this book is indispensable.

In tandem with Levine's "Jazz Theory" book, this massive tome is a perfect Bible for beginner-to-intermediate jazz pianists. It gets you from theory to polychords, builds off of voicings and stylings by artists like Mulgrew Miller, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Keith Jarrett and more, and approaches everything in bite-sized chunks that you can practice and build off of.Best advice I can offer though: take it slow, and be okay taking it slow. This is a DENSE book. You can spend a month mastering a page of material. When it comes to getting voicings, riffs, chordscale relationships etc under your fingers, there's no shortcut. There's a lot in here.

This is a great book for the serious pianist who wants to learn jazz techniques,it is not a collection of jazz sheet music.So if your style is to learn jazz while you play it, this not for you.Rather this is a jazz theory instruction book.There are only a few bars of jazz songs in here,not complete songs.

This book is awesome, but its not a walk in the park. I've been paying the piano for a long time, playing classical music for a long time that is. Even though I can play classics with little to almost no effort, I have my troubles with this book, i.e. with jazz. The trouble is not so much in the technique as it is the trouble to getting accustomed to this kind of playing. If you want to play classical music, you pick up a sheet and just play, in the sense that you read the notes and the tempo and just do it. Here, however, things are a bit different. Where in the classical world you almost brainlessly follow the rules on the sheet, here you can play many things and how it will sound is up almost entirely to you. It takes time to master the cycle of fifths for example and the music is played in a different way, that is, minimum information about what to play is given and filling in the 'gaps' is expected from the player. The content is great, in the sense of clarity and exposure of jazz in general. Conclusion : Don't expect to rush through this. Even if it seems to go a bit slower than expected, stick to it, practice the things that Mark suggests until you've mastered them (may take some time) and see yourself becoming a player that knows how to play the piano in an improvisational manner.

I have purchased at least six jazz piano books before this one. I have wanted to study jazz for a long time and I just got bored with every single book that I have tried to study with. The thing is that most authors write endless pages of chord progressions without actual song applying method. I have fake books of course but I have no way of knowing how to voice the chords written in them.I got frustrated for the longest time. I tried to study with a few teachers who recommended me to practice more inversions and exercises without any musical reference, just drills. I got bored and stopped.Finally, this amazing book was recommended to me and I smiled again. Here's the thing: Levine talks about theory, as he should, and teaches you little by little how to apply that small portion of theory towards a chord progression. Then, he adds a nice standard and teaches you how to apply that voicing to the melody in two or three different ways. For instance, he'll show you the melody of "Infant Eyes" by Wayne Shorter with basic 7th chords in a lead sheet style. Then, he'll remove the melody and writes a three voice harmony. Next page he'll add that voicing to the melody and encourages you to come up with your own voicing. Next, the same melody with voicing that includes 13th, b9, #4, and suspensions.He notates where the 9th, 11th, and all 5th are so you know what is happening. This is very helpful when you read 7 different notes in an inverted chord. He explains why he is doubling the melody or how to substitute the 7th for the 9th or the 5th for the b13, how to play the same voicing in rootless position, etc. It's a complete study on how to approach a song from different angles. Then, he continues with more harmony and standards. This is the best approach because you are learning to voice along with actual songs and not just endless drills. You are forced to think how to add the 9th or whatever according to the inversion you are playing and what the melody is doing rather than just chord progressions without any musical context.This is the best way to learn anything, period. You don't learn a new language by memorizing every verb in that language. You learn a little bit and then try to write it, pronounce it, say it slowly and then fast, etc.You'll learn a lot from this book.Before studying from this book: you must have a very SOLID understanding of music theory. You must know how to read music.I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.EB

Pretty cheesy decision.On the whole, this is a book incredibly important for the well being of our children, and to bare down on the pricks of this case who call themselves lawyers -- they enabled an extremely successful, almost industrial-level, serial child rapist.Why? Because Epstein was Filthy Rich. In American Justice, money talks. And in Epstein's case, it screamed.Hats off to Patterson for walking on the wild side of non-fiction. The world of sane, healthy people, and all parents, owe him and the others a lot of gratitude for getting this story out to the public. Child Sex Trafficking is the scourge of the 1%. Epstein over here, and Savile across the Pond, each will become doors to this dark, foul world of sexual parasites feeding on the most vulnerable, just like the Vatican became a symbol for the same in the church. Hooyah.

Researched and written with John Connolly, an investigative reporter, and Tim Malloy, print and television journalist, James Patterson turned out yet again an interesting and page-turning book.Chapters remain short 2 — 4 pages in this 287 page book, including Coda and Epilogue.The subject is Jeffery Epstein, convicted in 2008, for soliciting an underage girl for prostitution. He serves 13 months of an 18 month sentence in the Palm Beach County Central Detention Center [the Stockade]. Wearing an ankle bracelet Epstein has "work release" privileges and allowed to leave prison grounds six days a week to go to his attorney's office, his office, or to his home on El Brillo Way in Palm Beach.In chapter's 32—33, Donald Trump bars Epstein from Mar-a-Lago when a member of the posh private resort complains to Trump his young daughter has been invited to Epstein's house, about two miles from the twenty acre resort. She goes, then complains to her father Epstein tries to get her to undress.Patterson writes, "...in no uncertain terms [Trump] told Epstein that he was barred from Mar-a-Lago" and Trump severs all ties with him.Epstein caters to ex-presidents [Clinton]; international politicians, royalty [Prince Andrew]; CEOs, Hollywood moguls ... you get the picture. His parties are infamous. His penchant for young girls, 14 and up, remains hidden from public scrutiny. The exceptions are those Eyes Wide Shut elite who pander along with his pedophile whims.Patterson, Connolly and Malloy have taken a sensitive subject and presented it with taste, in an interesting format in the Patterson drama to keep you turning the pages.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This is the story of Jeffrey Epstein and just a few of his victims. A man that did not come from money, and didn't even finish college, moved himself into some of the most rarified circles in the world just by his gift with numbers and knowledge of people. Amassing a great fortune, and having a reputation as a great man- smart and charming; one would think this would be enough. But he has a dark secret-an obsession. He likes under aged girls- "the younger the better". He would have them brought in to give him "massages" and would sexually abuse them. This went on for years with many young girls. When he was finally caught, he was charged only with one count of soliciting a prostitute and spent 13 months in jail of a 18 month sentence. How did he get off so lightly? How did he get away with this for so long? And even though he has been made to make restitution to many victims and is a registered sex offender, was justice really served? This book goes into all these question. I don't normally read true crime as I like a bit of distance between reality and my mayhem. This one, though.... the idea of it just would not leave me alone. My niece is only a year younger than Epstein's youngest victim listed in this book. That anyone could take these girls and do this to them.... it kills me. And then there's the fact that I had never heard of this case- nor had my family. How did it get kept so quiet? How was the time he served sufficient? What happened to his associates- and to the girls? There were so many questions. The authors took care, changing names and giving respect to the victims; and did their best not to sensationalize this case. Indeed, some reviewers even called it dry in parts, but I loved it. I liked that they added chapters in the victims (and Epstein's) point of view, so that you could better understand them and feel for them. I also liked that they added pieces of the police interviews. To me, this was the best way to do a story like this. I would give it a four star review. Four Stars On the adult content scale... by the very nature of this book I would not hand it to a young teen. It isn't written for a young audience. There is language, sexual violence... The 49-Mile Scenic Tour is a great way to see San Francisco at your own pace and you can make your own choices about where to spend more or less time. This book is worth the purchase just to have the turn-by-turn directions as it's hard to sometimes find or see the street signs. We also purchased the SF Guide Map as it has the tour highlighted in red. With both the map and the directions we had no difficulty navigating our way. The book gives detailed information about each area covered by the tour.

This is the the second time I've purchased this book (I lost the first copy) and upon receiving it I remembered why I purchased it in the first place. This is THE quintessential guide to the 49-mile drive.
