My 6 young children (ages 12 to 3) and I have all had fun with this book. In fact, everyone in my family keeps passing it around and I have a hard time finding it when I want to use it, so I purchase 2 more of Christopher Hart's book to keep for my self, and the kids get this one to use. The book has allowed me to re-find a love in art that I lost 20 years ago as a child. You will not be disappointed in the purchase.

Lots of great instruction in this one. And, humongous is the truth! While the drawings are simplistic this is the perfect beginner book. Just what was called for.

Christopher Hart is the cartoon guru and his books are easy to follow, and have a lot of great information in them. I own several of his books and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book, or any of his other books to anyone who is interested in the art of cartooning.

This book truly is humongous! Couldn't they find any thicker paper?Aside from that...Christopher Hart is wonderful!This book is wonderful!Just add some paper and pencils and you are ready to draw something silly and make someone smile.To quote Arnold Schwarzenegger, "DO IT!"

I have two students who are really interested in drawing cartoons. After reviewing at least 20 books on Amazon.com I decided to wait for this book to come out and pre-ordered a copy.I now have it in front of me and believe it will be an excellent book for both students so I just ordered another one.The instructions are clear and the examples are simply fantastic.I personally have never been able to draw anything but even I now believe I could draw a cartoon character.This book is strongly recommended as THE starter book. Even for students who can not read it would not take much time for a parent to read the instructions to the student and then let the student take it from there.This would be a great book for any home school student interested in cartooning.This book does not, and does not pretend to, discuss anything about story lines or how to "make it" in the cartooning world. Great item. A nice beginner guide to drawing. Images are simple and easy to reproduce. A lot of fun and highly recommended.

Chris Hart's "How To Draw Cartoons for Comic Strips" is a much better book in my opinion. However,this book is great for the artist that enjoys drawing cartoon characters from television animation.

This book will take you from beginner or novice, through the steps of creating Chris's own characters, which leads you to creating your own. It is incredibly useful and I refer back to it all the time.

My 4 year old's pre-k was doing Pete the Cat themes and he fell in love with cats. I bought this and a set of more of them and he was super pleased. the art is adorable and colorful and the cat characters always look calm and gentle. The story keeps his interest.

This is a cute little story for early readers or young kids. Pete the cat goes on a scuba adventure looking for a seahorse but can't find one. Little does he know but the sea horse is following him around at all times. My kids giggled on each page as Pete can't find the seahorse that is tickling him on the foot. This is about right for a 1st grade reader. It isn't all phonetic 1 and 2 syllable words, but the words and sentences repeat and are pretty simple.We love Pete the Cat and this one is another early reader winner

Although I was in the education world years ago, I had never heard of Pete the Cat until my oldest son started Kindergarten. After he begged me to get these books, I started liking some of them a lot. I have bought a few that I feel are literally pointless or complete copies of other stories (Halloween one!), but this one is a pretty good one. I like that it is a cat going scuba diving... that's funny to the kids. Plus, the entire seahorse part is funny to the kids as well. So, definitely entertaining and has some educational parts that the kids find interesting.

"Read it again Mommy, again!" That's my little daughter who can't get enough of this book every night before bedtime. She loves to call out the different sea creatures Pete the Cat encounters with each page, looks concerned when the cave becomes very dark and he can't find his way out, then smiles from ear to ear when he finds a way out of the cave and finds out what's been tickling him during his dive. This is the first Pete the Cat book we've bought for her, and it definitely won't be our last! Great to read to your preschooler!

"Can we read it again RIGHT NOW?!?!" asked my four year old emerging reader, upon finishing this book!It was an instant hit!Synopsis: Pete is on an adventure to see many ocean creatures, but especially a seahorse, after the captain whetted his appetite by telling him about it. As he traverses the wide ocean world, he discovers many interesting fish and places but never seems to put two-and-two together that there is a seahorse following and tickling him the whole journey through! Of course at the end, it all comes together!The children giggled, and their mother loved that they were learning about all kinds of aquatic animals as we went along!If you enjoy this, another hearty recommendation would be the "hilarious" book May I Please Have a Cookie? (Scholastic Readers, Level 1) and if you were looking to reinforce the educational aspect of Pete the Cat Scuba-Cat, check out this beautiful book: Over in the Ocean: In a Coral Reef.

Perfect for my 4-year old who has just started reading. The repetitive characters are great and she really likes them. The books are relatively short and the pages are one or two lines. Perfect for new readers with easy words and relatively few difficult words.

My little girl loves Pete! She was reading 98% of words in these books before she even started Kindergarten. Now I get her the books because she enjoys reading them and because they have cute stories and repetitive sight words that help kids familiarize themselves with the words and gain confidence.

My kids love Pete the Cat and the set of books for beginning readers is great. The sentences are short and vocabulary are at the perfect level for the beginning reader. We have almost all the books as well as some of the more non beginner books as well. highly recommended!

Kids love Pete the Cat! Very fun to read and nice for learning with word repetition for increased word recognition. With the word repetition, kids don't get so frustrated and sustain attention. The illustrations are also great and help with word/concept identification.

I especially appreciated the transliterated mantras, the extra lists and the glossary. My meditations have really been enhanced and I feel more intimate with the massive active consciousness of the Lord of the Cosmos. A little old lady wrote this book, you can find racier versions of this material. Being a little old lady myself, I was much relived at the dignity with which the stories were presented. I only wish the book could have been much thicker with more in depth intricacies, but that would not be one book. Good job condensing the essentials! I will re-read this one. Aum, Namah Shivaya!

I love this book. It tells of Shiva which is my favorite of Trimurtis. It explains many different aspects of Shiva instead of him just being the destroyer, which is more realistic. If he was just the destroyer he be more akin to a messenger or angel than a personification of the one God. Iy even tells you how you can worshio him/her and even speaks of Shakti/Shivaa. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in eastern religion.

I've gained a lot of knowledge about Shiva from this book. It's a very great one although stories told in this book are quite different from what I've read before. I'm sure anyone reading this book will enjoy the stories.

The book is a well written trove of information about Shiva, those whose worship him, and a glimpse of what "devotion" is. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the source and foundation of many of today's books written as a basis for religions.

This is a remarkable book for those looking to grow in their depth of connection and understanding of Shiva.

There actually is no competitor to Meltzer's book when it comes to a book of this type for the SAT Writing/Reading (she has a great Reading book too). It isn't about drilling as most of them are. It's about the philosophy of the SAT. She also backs up her advice with relevant questions from Khan Academy in each chapter (Khan has partnered with College Board to provide free practice, so these are not made up questions by someone who is not connected with the company who writes the test). There is a LOT of information in this book and it does NOT go on ad nauseam about process of elimination, which seems to be the basis of most other "strategy" books. Anyway, a very good book. That being said, there are typos (just as in ANY other book - so certainly NO reason to condemn this book as some on here have - that's just silly - what you get out of it far overrides the flaws found in it), as others have said, and the only thing I could wish for is for the author to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE respond when people write with questions, or alternatively, just to simply be proactive and publish a listing of the known typos in the book. This would allow me to give the book five stars. Note to the author: As you have a blog, Erica, I would strongly recommend posting an entry simply listing these errors (that's not so hard, is it, Erica? Erica, you must know them by now. And it would be so simple to make this product fabulous.), so the young people who are supporting you, Erica Meltzer, by purchasing your book (and relying on you) aren't confused, forever wondering if they've run into a typo or if they truly do not understand your advice. Help your supporters out here, eh? And help me out, so I can recommend your book without caveats. I hate to see fantastic products fall short of what they could be.

After completing this book getting around a 87% on the practice test in the book, I took an official college board practice test. After reviewing answers, I found that I have gotten 13 answers WRONG in the writing section. Before the book, I have gotten 11 answers wrong consistently on college board tests. Maybe it is the way I studied, but I literally know all the concepts in this book from head to toe yet I am still performing poorly. Worst sat prep book I have ever bought, honestly...

This book is well written with SAT like practice questions at the end of each chapter. Though the examples within the chapter are explained, answers to the practice questions are NOT EXPLAINED at all. Only answer keys are provided. I wish explanations were provided too. It's because of this reason, I'm leaving a 3 star feedback. I'm disappointed.

I am a full-time test-prep tutor, and have found that most of my students only have a rudimentary grasp of the many of the grammar rules that the SAT tests. Though many of these students are excellent readers and writers, no one has ever taught them the fundamentals of grammar or explained the building blocks of sentences. Meltzer's book is a fantastic resource since it thoroughly covers all the grammatical concepts an SAT test taker needs to know. Things I liked:1. All error types are explained. Unlike many other SAT books, which gloss over or skip certain errors, this book covers everything with the insight that only comes from long-term scrutiny of actual SAT tests.2. Blue Book (College Board Official SAT Study Guide) questions are categorized. This is important, since students need to be able to recognize the errors in actual SAT questions and can use this book as an index to look up and practice troublesome error types.Things that I think could be improved:1. The book often is dry and utilitarian. It's hard to make grammar interesting, but all but the smartest and most motivated students may find this book difficult to read and use, even though some of the writing is down-to-earth and funny. I think changing the layout, graphics, and look of the book might help.2. Most of the practice questions and exercises do not have answer choices. It would be great if the author had written SAT-style answer choices to go along with the exercises. Of course, students should spend more time with blue book questions than with the questions in this book.Overall, this book is the best of its kind, and is a great resource for SAT tutors and for motivated students.

I decided to buy this book, because quite a few websites and youtube channels have said that Erica Meltzer makes the best SAT prep books. But as I have been going through this book, I found myself more puzzled than before, because of all the errors it has in the book, the teaching of wrong information, and the exercises without any explanation to the answers.I don't recommend you to buy this book. Don't make the same mistakes I have made.

Not nearly as good as the reviews would lead you to believe -- unless you really enjoy silly juvenile behavior. As usual, DeMille puts together a good story and he knows how to write -- but he absolutely ruins the book with the obnoxious character of John Corey. I've read a number of DeMille's more recent books and expected (and received) Corey's typical excessive smartass comments -- well, I knew what I was getting into, so that's not even a critique. This one, however, goes even farther over the top. There was a heavy emphasis on Corey's sex drive (Neanderthal competition for women that I've never witnessed by any man anywhere in my entire life), to the point I was just disgusted with it, and his behavior (e.g., deliberately vandalizing things with an axe because he was angry) would get him fired from any police agency anywhere.

I love the John Corey books. this isn't the best of them but any John Corey is worth the read. And this has an interesting mystery at the center of it. When two scientists at a highly restricted germ warfare lab on Plumb Island are killed, John Corey is the only person who doesn't buy the theory that they were trying to sell their latest discovery to the highest bidder and that he should keep it hushed for the sake of national security. But, this turns out to be incorrect and the real reason is a straight up cop-shop mystery with the patented Corey humor pushing the story along. Like a lot of the Corey books, this isn't action packed, it's a deductive mystery with some memorable characters and that's fine with me.

Plum Island is the third of this author's books I have now read and I am hooked. i'm working on number four now and enjoying every minute. He's a great writer with a mix of knowledge of investigative work, inter-agency conflicts (all true), sarcasm and great humor. the self-deprecating humor of his John Corey and other lead characters, is a true skill. clearly, Mr. DeMille does extensive research on his topics and locations. i actually did some fact checking on things I hadn't known before and found that he took real facts, local lore, geography and procedures, mixing them into a carefully crafted story that rings true and holds my interest. That is not always easy because I am an extensive reader and have experience in the fields of which he writes. But he has hooked me and I am ordering more of his work. This author has made it to my personal Hit Parade.

This was my second Nelson DeMille book. I previously read The Gold Coast, which I loved. But Plum Island was only okay.I have two reservations about it. First, this time out I didn't find the sarcastic, jokey narrative funny. The Gold Coast's narrator-protagonist was also kind of like that, but it was more restrained and not distracting there (in fact, it was a pleasure in that book). Here, it was over the top. I found John Corey to be obnoxious at times and simply not funny. (Example: I didn't know that haughtily referring to yourself in the French -- "Moi" -- is a real hoot; must be because John Corey does it all the time).Second, it just wasn't that strong as mysteries go. It unfolds in a very linear way, no twists or turns, really. Corey uncovers clues and reaches big conclusions way too easily, and by about 55-60% into the book, you can pretty much see where it's going.I give it three stars because it has its occasional charms. It wins a few points for a good setting which is easy to envision, and frankly a good hook that dominates the first 100 pages or so -- the story had a promising set up at the get go. But it was only okay after that. I don't expect to read any more John Corey novels, but I probably will try The Gold Coast's sequel, The Gate House.

I've read many of Nelson Demille's novels and decided to go back to this first John Corey story recently. It is a book I believe that I read at some point in the past, probably shortly after it was first published in 1997.John Corey is one of those characters that can be found in many stories of this type - irreverent and smart-alecky, a rule breaker who somehow still manages to cleverly solve the case even while pissing off his boss and half of the people around him. Oh, and not to forget he has an eye for the ladies and manages to partner up with an attractive female at some point in each story, often leading to some degree of romantics along the way.So it is formulaic in that sense, but enjoyable as these stories usually are. The setting in this case is Long Island, bringing in some of the wealth that inhabits the area, as well as a secret U.S. Government lab residing on, you guessed it, Plum Island. Plus - buried treasure! (The skull and crossbones on the book cover should be a giveaway to that aspect of the story). Altogether there are plenty of story elements to keep it interesting, and DeMille writes well and it is an easy read with enough suspense to keep the reader motivated to the end.

First let me say that I started the Corey series with Lions Game and continued as each new book was published. Then I bought this one..the first in the series.If I was a new reader of the Corey series, I am not sure I would have continued the series. The story was ok and character development was fine, except for the female detective..she seemed rather shallow. But what really annoyed me was Coreys lack of ability to answer a question without being sarcastic or making a joke. It got tiresome halfway through the book.Also the idea that boat drivers can yell at one another, in a hurricane, and be heard. As a boater I can tell you that would not be so unless you were side by side, which was not the case in this book.
