It's a little bizarre that a popular (at least according to Amazon sales figures) book about passing along media or commentary has gone over a month without having a review posted. I think it's because this is an ingenious, yet jam-packed book that looks at online participation and the sharing of information from a unique perspective that just plain forces you to think. This is not a quick read.While there are plenty of social media books out that look at the "new phenomenon" of sharing as an organizational strategy or as platforms of tools as compelling new ways to share, the authors of "Spreadable Media" look more at the material itself that is or isn't being shared. What characteristics of materials make people want to spread them? What's in it for the sharer? When people read, hear or watch something that makes them want to circulate it, what triggers that decision? The authors point out there's nothing really new about this motivation. The passing down of keepsakes, family heirlooms, newspaper articles, scrapbooks, family trees, etc. has gone on for generations. First the photocopier and now social media platforms have just made it easier and almost instantaneous.The main focus of the book is on the broadcast, mass-media business model of "stickiness" of content vs. the parallel concept of "spreadability." It's becoming increasingly apparent that if media doesn't spread today, it's dead--like a film/song/book/work of art/best practice no one sees/hears/reads/studies/tries. So while there's a loss of control in allowing your audience to manipulate and pass along one's creative effort, there's also an expanded opportunity that it will uncover new audiences and be more widely acclaimed than if you protect it and threaten users for "stealing it." Corporations, institutions, universities and other power structures are starting to recognize that.Perhaps one reason "Spreadable Media" may be slow to generate reviews is in the sheer breadth of their analysis. My personal reason for reading "Spreadable Media" was to create company communities where members will pass along content to co-workers and customers to expand product knowledge and benefits and ultimately to increase sales. Some of the most insightful information I've read about this topic is indeed covered in this book. The authors portray "lurkers" (the bane of online communities where the vast majority of members who only consume others' information without contributing any of their own) as only learning and biding their time until they too understand the rules and start to participate. In Chapter 5 they even describe what makes materials sharable. This will help me to completely rethink the development of content rather than just to focus on why community members are either engaged or not.The density issue comes into play, however, as they go through a variety of entertainment, mass-media examples about how and why we are all moving toward spreadability. These examples are interesting to consider but can be difficult to digest. There are probably few readers who have all these perspectives who can follow these various threads. So if the authors have done anything "wrong" in the book it is just the amount of commentary on how much our culture is changing to address ways that we learn across all aspects of our lifestyles. In summary then, "Spreadable Media" is a great book but prepare yourself for some pretty deep but original thinking as Jenkins, Ford and Green argue for the increasingly networked world we're all living in.

Jenkins reinforces his thesis of participative and convergence culture, adding now the notion of spreadable media. People take advantage of digital devices to spread their artifacts particularly in social platforms, opening chances to build learning communities, fans activities, globalized movements (grassroots) etc. He tries to maintain highly critical view, avoiding to discover alternative paths where there aren't. Especially he cultivates profoundly critical position in face of capitalism's market forces, since these are determined to monetize all social platforms in the name of private profit. Well documented in empirical cases and media releases, this book reveals great research talent, critical balance, very good theorizing insight, and future vision.

This book examines the concept of viral media and argues for a different paradigm based on participatory culture and fandom, where people choose to spread ideas and their interests to other people. It's a fascinating book that presents an alternative perspective on marketing, but also on pop culture studies, bringing those studies to the 21st century by focusing on the role of social media within pop culture. If you are interested in pop culture, you'll find this book useful for understanding how pop culture spreads and if you are interested in marketing this book will provide a different perspective to the prevailing wisdom of the time.

This is an excellent volume that should be required reading for anyone studying the media. While I would have liked to see more discussion of the public sphere and the implications of the media environment for the evolution of political processes and systems, the authors are more interested in culture which is understandable given their collective past work. And while I may disagree with minor points throughout the book, it is an excellent read that motivates the reader to truly think about the implications of the changing media environment

Excellent compilation of case studies and thinking about how messages spread. The authors smartly mix approaches from economics, marketing, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and mass communication to help us understand why messages spread. The discussion of fan issues and participatory culture are especially illuminating.It does to tend to focus on video examples and entertainment fan communities, however. As a journalist and mass-comm researcher, I would have appreciated more community-oriented examples (as Clay Shirky uses in "Here Comes Everybody"), but overall, it's a thought-provoking book about today's media environment. And I loved the e-book "extra" essays from other authors.

In this quickly evolving world of social media, it is good to have a guide that can either echo your current thoughts or put you in line with a new way of approaching the hurdles. This book is an easy read full of helpful insight.

My first comment pertains only to the Kindle edition, which I purchased today, for convenience of availability, as I lead a Faith Formation department at a large parish --The Kindle edition does not include Page Numbers! How silly! If I want to mark something in my Kindle edition, that I've noticed in my print edition, the closest I can immediately come is the CHAPTER -- not the page! Then, I have to check the print edition, to see what's on the page, and go back to the Kindle edition to find a page that looks like that in the chapter. In the Kindle edition you can only find things by Chapter. You could find your exact page, IF you already knew the "location number" that is assigned to that page in the Kindle version. The problem is, that you can't know that until AFTER you find the correct page. Sorry, Amazon, I love ya, but this is NUTS. This is THE reason why I give the KINDLE VERSION of this Book 4 stars, instead of 5. It's a demerit for KINDLE, not for the Book itself.The Kindle Version also leaves out all of the photos that appear in the print version.Now, I'll take a breath, and speak to the print edition of the Book, which I have also purchased through Amazon.It's excellent -- provided that you also own, and have ready at hand, a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The US Catholic Catechism for Adults is not an official doctrinal/dogmatic work; it is an instrument for catechesis, based upon the CCC. I keep my CCC, and the Compendium CCC at hand, to look up the references. As a leader of a Faith Formation department, I feel a responsibility to be able to "back up" what appears in any teaching instrument, with the actual text from the CCC and/or other official Church documents.

I had wondered whether to get this book or the regular Catechism of the Catholic Church for our RCIA group but am glad I chose this one. It gives straight forward information in an easy to read format that helps them to relate to the most important facets of the faith.

I love this book! I have read the Catechism of the Catholic Church in its entirety and I recommend that all Catholics and anyone wanting to know what the Catholic Church really teaches read the CCC. However, the CCC can and does get bogged down at times with religious jargon that can be difficult for those uneducated in Catholic theology. The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults solves that problem. It uses the text from the CCC and then presents it in bite-sized, easy to digest pieces that makes the CCC much clearer than it is on its own. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know about the Catholic Church in a highly readable and understandable format.

This book is based upon the superb CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. The book introduces many Catholic Saints and other outstanding Catholics. I'm currently using the book to catechise a woman who wishes to return to the Church after being away since childhood. She is very inteligent and seems to grasp the basic teachings of the Church, The book is difficult and takes concentration to go through it. I recommend the book to those who must prepare adults for Baptism, Confirmation and/or First Confession.

I'm a Baptist pastor serving in a mostly Catholic community. This is a great resource for me. It gives me the knowledge I need to talk with those who are brought up in the Catholic faith (devout or otherwise) and connect with them. It gives me the common ground I need to connect with this community where we can agree on so we can begin a conversation. As a Protestant Chaplain in a veterans' home I am often called to minister to Catholic vets when the Catholic Chaplain is away. I am able to minister to them in ways that comforts them and I am given an opportunity to be a witness.

We bought the Kindle version for use in a class at our church. While all the content is the same as the printed edition, the formatting is different, making it difficult to follow along with the priest leading the discussion. First issue is the lack of page numbers in our Kindle Fire HD. Second, and more importantly, the printed edition contains blocked text in gray boxes which interjects pertinent commentary. This is presented in the Kindle as a section of text with a line before and after, but otherwise indistinguishable from the main text, which disrupts the flow of the reading and understanding.The US Catholic Catechism is unique in providing supportive description and examples. It is not just the dry presentation of question and answer like the Baltimore Catechism of my youth, but may include real world examples of people living the faith as well as theological truths. Despite being a Catholic all our lives, we are learning new things in an adult format about our Church.

Whereas the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) Catechism of the Catholic Church is a large book, more like a book of theology than what we have grown to expect in a catechism; this book, US Catholic Catechism for Adults selects material important to the Church in the USA and it is in the Question and Answer format. The Bishops have done an excellent job in their selection of material to put in the Q and A format we are comfortable with. It is attractively done and much easier to find the answers to questions anyone might have. As the title indicates the topics here are of more interest to adults and late adolescents than for children. Personally I like using this book rather than the CCC because the same material is more accessible and answers easier to find.

This is an updated catechism from the U.S. bishops - a current Baltimore catechism. It is great for personal or group use. Each chapter begins with a brief biography of an American Catholic and how their life fulfilled the topic to be covered. At the end of the chapter are questions for reflection.I just wish it was available in large print.

Overall: Excellent book packed with many photos previously unpublishedThe Good: Norman Franks is considered by many to be the "dean" of First World War aviation. With dozens of books on his resume, one expects nothing less than the best from Franks and he does not disappoint. The book is written with Frank's expansive command of WW1 aviation history, mixing an overview of the progress of the war tactically and strategically with a very intimate view of the pilots who fought in the last half of the air war. Given that the book is a pictorial record of the war, Franks uses the few pages allotted to non-image history to good advantage. The captions accompanying the photographs frequently add a depth of information lacking in most photo-sections of books on this subject.The Bad: Unusual for Franks, the book has a meandering style that links one pilot to the fate of another to the fate of a third. While imparting the intimate nature of air conflict in the First World War, especially given the limited number of combatants, it does take a little getting used to and does seem a trifle random. There are some spelling errors in the photo-sections that the editor missed and a few minor omissions in the history. For instance, the deaths of Robert Little and Manfred von Richthofen in the 1918 section are not even mentioned but in fairness to Franks, they were discussed in earlier sections of the book.

Rabbi Avi Weiss is the Founding Rabbi of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale-the Bayit, and founder of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School and Yeshivat Maharat. I started with reading her first book "Hold Me Tight." Absolutely loved it! Then I went on to this book, loved it again. The way she frames couple interactions as attachment bonds completely opened up my mind and heart to understand love and how we get stuck in patterns that veil and close the door or love. Reading through the various examples of couple breakthroughs using EFT helped me realize that we have alternate choices in communication besides the usual criticize-attack mode or the withdraw go-cold mode that we all too often get caught up in when relationships get stressed. This cuts down to the core of relationships issues and distress, and gives awesome tools for "changing the dance" as she likes to say. I'm reading her book for therapists now, "The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy," because I find this information so valuable and transformative. I also highly recommend it to my colleagues, patients, and anyone suffering from relationship distress, or just wants to better understand this unique and special human bond at a deeper level.

Sue Johnson has a gift for presenting science with such delight and joy that it's like opening an extra special birthday present that the giver is as excited about as the receiver. In Love Sense, Sue opens up the science of love for all of us. She begins by pointing out that our first instinct is to seek contact and comforting connection rather than sex or aggression. This idea opens up a whole new arena for understanding behavior and interactions. The idea that we must stand alone and strive for independence falls away for the idea that what we all really need is closeness and comfort. We worry that if we are "too soft" that we will raise self centered people but, in fact, we are mostly driven to be empathic rather than competitive. Sue reveals the science of her ideas in much the same way that Richard Feynman reveals physics - with joy and engagement. Sue discusses emotion, the brain, sex, monogamy. She addresses many issues couples struggle with over a lifetime of partnership such as making a commitment, parenthood, coping with the empty nest, retirement. Along this journey, Sue explains the common cycles couples get into and the emotion that is underneath those cycles that drives them. She uses examples from her work with couples to demonstrate what happens in these dynamics and how attachment styles and needs affect each person. She slows down the dynamics and digs deep into the emotion and attachment needs to expose what reassurance or support is needed to circumvent the cycle. In chapter nine Sue tells a love story and describes a betrayal between a couple, the opening up, understanding what was happening between them that created the environment for this fracture to happen and then the repair. This will be a wonderful piece for our clients to read to begin to understand the opening that needs to happen when people have hurt each other. Sue moves on to expose many of the challenges we have in our ability to be present with those we love. Throughout this book, the conversational style Sue has, her deep understanding of her subject and her passion for this topic are palpable. This book will be a best seller and I believe that it will create the revolution Sue talks about. We will begin to find each other, open up to each other, expose our vulnerability, understand our emotions and heal our interpersonal fractures. Thank you Sue for caring enough to bring forward these important messages. This is a lovely, mesmerizing book.

Sue Johnson's perspective on relationship dynamics is core to our current scientific understanding of love. She writes well and persuasively makes her point that the need for bonding comes from deep instinctual roots, and when our bond with our beloved is threatened we respond typically with either a fight or flight response.This is probably the most useful book I can recommend to my clients to help them understand the basic dynamics of loving relationships. This, and Dr. Johnson's previous book, - Seven Conversations - which is extremely helpful for couples who are working through distress. These two books are essential reading to anyone who wants to understand how love works and what often makes it go sour. Still, both these books can be difficult for the layperson to follow in places; and somewhat frustrating for the practitioner/scientist who wants really clear links to the research base she claims to depend on for her many assertions.The book has a set of references for each chapter, but these are unfortunately for the entire chapter and are difficult to link with the many individual assertions she makes in each chapter. Thus it is unfortunately extremely difficult to follow how her "research-based" arguments and conclusions are really linked to research. This is particularly vexing in her chapter which asserts monogamy is essential to human bonding, which is a controversial issue.Attachment Theory does not, of course, explain the whole mystery of love - as if anything really can. Readers who are looking for the "single silver bullet" to understanding their relationships and resolving relationship differences will be disappointed, although Johnson's work goes a long way toward this understanding. A convergence of contemporary theories on relationship goes further to this end. For example Harville Hendrix's work on Imago theory (based on Jung's Imago theory) is still essential to understanding how opposites attract (but you have to sort of subtract some of the rigid psychosexual developmental theory of Freud that Hendrix's work also hinges upon). Also, the work by John and Julie Gottman on what is needed to "Build a relationship house" is extremely helpful for couples who often lack a sense of basic direction and basic relationship skills - but of course the Gottmans' work is really a collection of useful observations rather than a cohesive theory about relationship and bonding. Sue John's work, and John Bowlby's work before her, prove a clear theoretical foundation for understanding relationships. You might think Sue Johnson's writings on attachment theory as providing the FOUNDATION upon which the work of Hendricks and the Gottman's can stand. Without the foundational understanding of attachment theory provided by Johnson the edifices built by Hendrix and the Gottmans can not stand firm.

Quite the eye opening scientific study of why we are who we are and what we can do about it. I have already recommended the book to friends and family members in order for them to see themselves through this view of how the mind develops though the actions of those we care about the most. The creation on attachment styles through the actions of others is a phenomenon that awakes our realization of why we act the way we do under certain conditions.If this was required reading in every K-12 curriculum, it would do the world a huge favor.Read it and pass it along!

A good map of a difficult region to map out, with enlarged map portions for various island groups. However, it isn't super-specificfor very small islands, and there were several tiny islands we went to, in Papua New Guinea's Louisiade Archipelago, which were barely indicated on the map (by a tiny dot) or not at all. I think I'd almost need a detailed atlas for getting those on a map.I am not sure that such an atlas even exists.I was on a National Geographic expedition to the region (its first to these specific islands) and even the maps in the ship library had very little detail, although the islands were shown.I think that for most purposes, this map would be just fine. I like the way it groups islands together according to which nation they belong to, by using a line border around nation-groups. This map makes the region more easy to understand politically.

This map will only be useful to you if you don't have any other basic resources, like a general world atlas or travel guides, at home.The main map itself shows the entire South Pacific region, with country boundaries clearly marked, but individual islands reduced to the size of dots.Major islands are shown on inset maps, however even these are still tiny - you will find bigger, more detailed, and more accurate maps of the same islands (and many more) in travel guidebooks to this region by Lonely Planet or Moon.In short, unless you just want a general map to hang on your wall, don't waste your money on this one!

This is a great map. We studied this area in homeschool this year. This map worked perfectly.

This is a pretty detailed map. I bought it to plan a vacation around the Fiji islands and it provided me a good overview of how the islands are located relative to neighboring islands. The map folds out nicely and everything is labeled clearly. Contrasts are good and islands are not too small.

A great map for getting around this part of the world.It's big - the area - so the map by definition cannot be too small-scaled. But if you only want to carry one map - this is it.

It's exactly what it says it is - a map of the Pacific Islands to show the general geography of the area, but not in as much detail as a guide book. These maps are hard to find but I got exactly what I wanted. It shows a big map of the Pacific Islands plus smaller maps of specific islands in more detail. The only thing I would like it to show which it doesn't, is the markers to show where Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia are(although without having all of NZ in it, obviously the bottom of the Polynesian triangle would be cut off.)

Useful map in planning travel in the Pacific.

I'm brand new to iOS and iTunes. This book really helped me get up to speed quickly without having to wade through a lot of techspeak. It's a reference I can easily use until I become more proficient, and then to answer specific questions to enable me to advance. The graphics and tips sections were very good, as was the summary at the end of each chapter.
