I could use a lot of fluffy words to describe this beautiful book because it is … beautiful.And yet, I needed this book at this place in time in my life. I had visions and ideas that this book would read like all of the other teaching books of Ram Dass but I was shown wrong.There is a straight forward, easy to digest approach to this book. Ram narrates this book … rather than teaches and so in some small way, it fell a little short of my expectations.And yet … it was relatable, sweet, insightful and very relevant. I did find myself skipping over parts because … well, because they just bored me! I guess I don’t have to digest everything Ram has to say and I gave myself permission to jump forward … but only small jumps!There are very healing nuggets in this book that struck me straight to the core. The first time I pulled out my highlighter pen and my Post-it-note page saver tab, was on page 5; “But now I’m learning to take my healing into my own hands. Healing is not the same as curing, after all; healing does not mean going back to the way things were before, but rather allowing what is now to move us closer to God”.Straight away … reality check!!! How many of us are trying to get back to some place that felt a hell of a lot more comfortable than it does currently?! There’s no going back, only allowing grace to show us a path forward from this moment. I was broadsided by this revelation … broadsided!There’s a gentle nudge to keep moving and Ram Dass is right along there with us. Pain, physical and emotional, is at the base of this book. With that being said, it's not a book of gloom and doom but rather a path of honoring and relinquishing old ways ... accepting a process. Aging is a process and if you’re like me, it’s a deep descent into the unknown black and murky waters. There’s no rule book to follow and each path is so different because each of us is so different and yet, Ram touches some place in all of us.I came to appreciate the space I’m in and the path I will follow. I’m learning how to ‘Allow’ the process rather than fight it and to honor the changes. The thing about changes is it’s an endless, never ceasing opportunity to judge because we don’t understand it. It can be frightening to not know what is happening and what is coming and Ram will invite you to settle in and allow, love and appreciate the vast opportunity to draw closer to God. He offers his insights that he has gleaned from his own experiences and he will offer stories of those he was associated with or close to. I appreciate the stories because with each story, I found a piece of myself which always offered a moment of healing.I found this book to be very healing for me. I could relate to so much in this book and Ram’s own experiences. On page 185, “Before I had the stroke, I was full of fears about aging, and one of my major fears was about the sicknesses that might be lurking ahead. Gandhi says that before you can get to God, you’ve got to confront your fears.”I realize that not everyone is trying to get to God. There are those who have been on a path or are currently on a path to discover who they think they are … not so much who they think God is and yet, we’re all trying to get to that place of joy and peace. Whatever path we are taking, aging will enrich it, magnify it and draw us closer to all that we seek. It’s the judgments we attach to the process that mess us up.I may pick this book up again in another 5 or so years when I forget or when I am looking for some nourishment to help me digest the impeding changes. Sometimes I want to stay young forever because there is innocence in the lack of wisdom and yet, understanding what I understand now is quite delicious and soul satisfying. It’s a rite of passage to age and if I can settle in, release the judgments and tap into the wisdom that is being imparted at each moment, there is a whole new life awaiting me.Welcome to the aging process.

My life radically changed in 1970-1971. Part of it was due to books, opening up the vistas of life. My mind was changed by what I read, and by what I did as a result of what I read. BE HERE NOW by "Baba" Ram Das, introduced practices I still embrace. Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, for instance, helped supplement the psychedelics I was involved in using, and distributing. STILL HERE was great to read this year, published in 2000, after his stroke; there were parallels to my life: my father's strokes, his friends strokes, my cancer and treatment challenges. I am still here, after three deadly encounters (May 2009; July 2009; April 2012), so his theme of embracing death and dying is spot on. I can go on to read his later books with joy. I thank those who write to us with their life experiences with hope and determination.

I've been a fan of Ram Dass since the 70's, when a friend introduced me to "Be Here Now." That book influenced me like no other.Fast forward to today, I have severe chronic thoracic back pain which restricts me to bed for all but a few hours per day (I'm 53). Everything about my life, or what's left of it, has changed. This book has helped me through, over and over. I read it, re-read it, and chew on passages over and over. The book stays on my bedstand constantly, so I can pick it up and read a section on Lonliness, Suffering, Loss of Role, Powerlessness, Depression, Facing Fear, Dependency, The Gift of Service, Releasing the Past, Learning to Grieve, Shedding Attachment to the Future, Learning To Die, Preparing for Death, etc. The book is a treasure trove of wisdom, beautifully concieved and written with love and compassion for you, the reader.I have never been a religious person, and do not accept Ram Dass' own belief in reincarnation. But the pages of the book devoted to religious aspects are relatively few, and because the book is so profound and yet down to Earth, anyone, regardless of their personal philosophy or religion, can benefit greatly from this wisdom.

I read "" Be Here Now" in the 70's so it is particularly fitting to read this second chapter of the life of Ram Dass. As I am wrestling with health issues and aging, quite suddenly by the way, this gift through Ram Dass is enlightening, practical and most of all comforting.

This is an excellent read. American society does not provide any rituals or rites of passage for getting old. In fact, unlike other societies, we are deemed to be useless and often a burden to our family members. This book teaches one to look into one's inner self for the answers to many unanswered questions. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for answers on transitioning to elder hood.

I marvel at how this man continues to inspire. Ram Dass, you are awesome!This book is the perfect gift for anyone who is dealing with the aging process - either their own or a loved one. Not only do our needs change as we age but so do our wants, as he eloquently points out. By the time I finished the book I was less attached to things that no longer served me and more curious about what lies ahead.I highly recommend this book for people of any age for whom aging is an issue.

This was an adorable little retelling, fun and light--and painfully short. So short I never felt like I got to know the characters, and while the actual plot of the story didn't deserve more time, the characters definitely did. I finished it in about an hour and a half (tops) of mellow reading, and came away wishing it was about twice as long, and filled with Rynn actually interacting with her love interest, not to mention her awesome horse (who did, in fairness, get the most "screen time" of the side characters, as he deserved). Most of the side character development was the princess, the horse, and the antagonist, and none of them actually felt "developed" so much as "well at least they're present."I have mixed feelings on this whole novella, and it's made me uncertain about the series. It seems like, if they're all this short, it would've been more enjoyable to release them as one book compilation instead of a staggered release of too-short stories that (judging by this one) tease you for the next part which isn't out yet instead of being a wink before you hop into the next story.A Goose Girl is cute and fun and I wouldn't recommend against reading it, but I don't feel inclined to tell anyone they should read it based on its own merits. It feels incomplete, like the outline of a story, missing the filler that makes it actually a story. But on the other hand, it really is cheerful and bright, and I wouldn't mind rereading it later as a quick little pick-me-up.Yeah, I really can't decide how I feel about this. I think it's more of a $0.99 novella, just on length alone, which is something to consider. For those who consider wordcount, I don't know the actual number, but this felt like about 30k.

I love KM Shea and have read nearly all her books. I have also referred many of her books to others with positive feedback from them. Unfortunately, this particular story fell very flat for me. I felt like the majority of the story took place in Rynn's head; her thoughts. Relationships weren't developed at all and everything was extremely rushed at the end. There was so much potential for this story and I liked the twist on the original. I was so looking forward to this release, but I really feel it should have been a full-length book instead of a novella.I really don't like to leave a poor review for a Shea book, and will definitely continue to read her future publications, but she has so many other stories that are better than this (try Red Rope of Fate, Cinderella and the Colonel and others of the Timeless Fairy Tale collection, or the King Arthur series, etc.). These are all favorites which I have read and re-read.

I loved this! The heroine is sweet, practical, and mouthy as many of her protagonists are, and unlike the original goose girl, I enjoyed that the talking horse was a more prominent character and the princess wasn't the central POV. Plus, for some reason I pictured Falada (the talking horse) as speaking with Liam Neeson's voice just from the description, which was awesome. Did anyone else get that?Anyway, I loved the world building and am now going through the rest of the Entwined Tales by different collaborating authors. All of them are fairytales with a new twist, connected together by one family's dealings with a cranky fairy godfather, and clean reading. I can recommend these without any misgivings to friends and family.

The Entwined Tales series is a series of six fairy tale adaptations written by six different authors about characters who must deal with the trials and tribulations of an oafish fairy godfather named Mortimer. The first book in the series is A Goose Girl by K.M. Shea, based on the Grimm Brothers fairy tale "The Goose Girl." I've become familiar with K.M. Shea's writing style as of late, and while I enjoyed some of her books more than others, I must say that this was a very fun read. I became reacquainted with the "Goose Girl" fairy tale recently after reading a version of it in Magic at Midnight last week, so I was eager to see someone else's take on the story."The Goose Girl" by the Brothers Grimm is a fairy tale about a jealous maid who stole a princess's identity while they were traveling to a foreign kingdom so that she could marry the prince and become a princess without anyone knowing the truth. The scheme would have gone through without a hitch if it hadn't been for the princess's talking horse named Falada, who communicated her secret even in death. K.M. Shea's novel was a different take on the story in which Rynn, Princess Davina's maid, was forced against her will to take her lady's place as princess so that Davina could seek adventure and shirk her responsibility to marry a man she had never met just in case he might be unattractive. She may sound like your average Disney Princess, but Davina was more of a comical character who hated responsibility and never quite thought things through all the way. As a result of her foolishness, she ended up getting robbed and seeking employment at the very castle where she had sent Rynn in her place.Rynn, on the other hand, was a terrific heroine and welcome breath of fresh air from the two-dimensional maid in the original fairy tale. Unlike most girls her age, Rynn had no desire to become a princess or to marry a prince. She was loyal to Princess Davina but even more loyal to her kingdom, which is why she was completely against the idea of such a treasonous act. Unfortunately for Rynn, Princess Davina had paid off the guards to ensure that her silly scheme went off successfully and used magic to keep Rynn quiet about her true identity. Rynn quickly realized that something was amiss when Captain Hulderic threatened her life at the slightest prospect of her failing to cooperate with the arrangement. Unfortunately, there was very little she could do about it thanks to her magical vow of silence. Her fairy godfather Mortimer was no help to her either by giving her the ability to control wind.Falada, the talking horse, played a smaller role in this book than he did in the fairy tale. With his occasional one line zingers, it was easy to forget he could speak. He often provided comic relief in more of a "Mr. Ed" style than that of a fantasy sidekick. Falada related to Rynn because they were both placed in situations that they couldn't control due to their sense of responsibility to the royal family. His ability to talk was another unwanted magical gift that the air-headed Princess Davina often took for granted without taking the time to get to know her equestrian companion. Falada provided Rynn with a mode of transportation when she went to investigate Davina's situation as the new goose girl. Great ideas for stations

Used in classroom

I have used these books in my classroom for a while. I bought this one for my ESOL classroom and for my son. I always get the pages laminated so that they will last.

There's a ton of laminating & cutting involved with these but they're worth the effort. My kindergarten class loves them when they use them as independent work centers.

I am a K SEI teacher, so my kids are very low to start. I use this with my very very high kids, and plan to use more at the end of the year. Right now, this is way too high for most of my kids.

I bought these for below grade level second graders and am very pleased. They work very well for these kids for independent work while still teaching valuable skills.

Easy to make and use. Everything you need is included. Colorful and appealing to children. I used colored 9x12 envelopes instead go folders or bags.

This is a sequel to one of Grisham's best, "A Time to Kill." Not necessarily a prerequisite - this books stands just fine on its own. picking up a few years later, lawyer Jake Brigance and his family still haven't recovered fully from the side-affects of the Hailey trial in the previous book. Once again we have a suspenseful plot with the same theme of whether racism and greed will overwhelm the outcome of a legal battle steeped in 1980's Mississippi. Grisham is definitely an expert story-teller with vivid characters and twists that keep you interested in what 'should' be a tedious and boring lawsuit over a hand-written will. A wonderful blend of comedy, tears, drama, suspense and gut-wrenching angst. Your opinion of the verdict sways back & forth but just when you think the outcome is obvious - guess again!If you haven't read "A Time to Kill" yet (or watched the movie), you might want to read it first, because it is equally good and this book will be a bit of spoiler.

John Grisham's original work was outstanding. He then fell off with less than impressive work - almost like he was rushing to meet a deadline. Case in point, The Associate which ended horribly leaving loose ends all over the place (and I've successfully forgotten the other failures). But with Sycamore Row, it seems Grisham's got his mojo back. It holds your attention by not revealing what 8 year old Ancil saw until the very end and the question that's the elephant in the room all through the book is why Hubbard left all that money to Lettie. About half to 3/4 into the book you start to figure out the why he left it. But not until the end do you realize the significant of why he hung himself. All these things become significant in the end and the book wraps up well. Basically couldn't put it down and am looking forward to JG's next novel. Hope it's not a bust!

SYCAMORE ROW by John Grisham is a fantastic read. The story takes place in a small town in the deep South in the late 1980s. It centers on the suicide of a crotchety but wealthy old man, Seth Hubbard. Hubbard leaves a handwritten will, legal in Mississippi, with very detailed instructions on how to dispose of his assets down to specific instructions dealing with his funeral and burial arrangements. In the will he leaves ninety percent of his very substantial estate to his black maid, Lettie Lang. The problem is that Hubbard had a legal document drawn up a year earlier by a large law firm in Memphis leaving most of his assets at the time to his two children and their families. In the handwritten will he specifies that nothing is to go to his children who he says have not bothered to visit him in years. The prime character in the story is Hubbard's lawyer, Jake Brigance, who never met Hubbard but whose job now is to administer his client's handwritten will. It is the trial of the century for the small Mississippi town with the colorful local judge, Reuben V. Atlee presiding. Sycamore Row is one of those Grisham novels that you cannot put down. John Grisham is one of the finest fiction writers of our time—he has proven it again with this writing. I give this outstanding novel a 5-star-plus rating.

The storyline so rich with vivid details, riveting characters, and humor that I found myself reading it for hours at a time. Last novel I read from Mr. Grisham was The Rainmaker. This one was okay, but man it took a long time to get set up. Trial scenes take time, I understand, but it didn’t deliver the way it should have. Big storyline, broad stroke characterizations, and some antics thrown into the equation, but about a quarter of the way in you start seeing people who are getting more in the way of the story and you start to wonder when things will get streamlined. You could read far worse books, I guess, but I was a little disappointed in how little return I got for all the effort. I have great respect for Mr. Grisham and the story he tells is rich, it’s just not my kind of story. Maybe I’m more disappointed by the numerous high star reviews that influenced my purchase. Will be reading another of his books shortly since it helps pass the time on the exercycle.

John Grisham’s Book, Sycamore Row: A Novel is a must read. It touches so many old and current topics.A good trial is when you listen to one of the lawyers and think, “Of course, there’s the truth. He’ll win.” Then you listen to the next lawyer and think exactly the same thing.The characters are so well drawn that you feel for them all. Some you love and some you hate, but the ending will find you with tears in your eyes.

After reading many books by self-published authors, this professionally written and edited novel was a reawakening as to why certain authors have earned the attention and respect of big name publishers. I admire the talent and intelligence of John Grisham to weave an amazing story and write a page-turner with such great ease and finesse. Well done! If you haven't read his work yet, I highly recommend that you do. Although some of his books have been made into movies, as they say, the books are always better.

So many twists and turns in the plot made this book hard to put down. Characters were multidimensional and believable. Just as good as A Time to Kill and I hope more Jake Brigance books are in the works. The ending was an emotional rollercoaster and I have to admit my eyes were moist. A reminder of how horrible people can treat each other but how justice and overcome evil. One of the most talented writers of our time.

Stephen Mack Jones is a published poet, an award-winning playwright, and a recipient of the prestigious Hammett Prize, the Nero Award, and the Kresge Arts in Detroit Literary Fellowship. He was born in Lansing, Michigan, and currently lives in the suburbs of Detroit. He worked in advertising and marketing communications for a number of years before turning to fiction. August Snow was his first novel.

This is the second book in the series that I have read. This author is so good. The story is so tight, the flow of the action and the characters in the event is spot-on. And at the very end I was surprised and amazed and so clear set this was a righteous in me.I am a character and relationship person. These stories are built on these factors. And I am a Detroit girl. Only left home after college. Have such great memories of that City before the big trouble. This writer brings me back to Detroit, great things I remember and the sense of its New Life in these days.The mix of crime and neighborhood and government agencies and some of the worst aspects of Michigan come together in a great story.And the writing is damn good. But maybe I said that already.

As an old Detroiter, I found Mr. Jones' descriptions of the lower West side engrossing and poignant and mostly accurate. His characters real and realistic. His treatment of the old north side and the Edison Park district are also captivatng. My wife's family loved there. He has room in whatever the rubber issue will be to spend a lot more time on the East side. My cousin who lives in GP Farms says it's still nice. We used to go to the Farms Pier to swim in the summer. My dad taught me how to swim by throwing me in the boat well. By the way, there was a Licavoli at Macchus' Red Fox with Jimmy and the Giacalone brothers. I loved both of his books. Looking forward to the third.

This is about the good people of the inner city about whom no suburbanite knows anything. It's a very well told tale.

Good for lovers of the knight, spiced with salsa, an urban renewal in literature, and yet an old fashioned private dick novel

Neo-Nazi bikers...thugs who look like they only eat glass and babies... the madam of an S&M cathouse...a priest who hides and transports undocumented immigrants...a skittish teenage girl hacker — these are some of the characters we meet in Lives Laid Away.Ex-cop August Snow is as wild and weird as any of them. Half Black and half Hispanic, he makes wonderful salsa. He’s also a dead shot and a black belt in karate — fully equipped for action. And there’s plenty in this book.Snow takes on the job of foiling a trafficking operation out of sheer goodness of heart. The victims are supposedly scooped up by ICE for deportation — but in reality, kidnapped for trafficking.Gunfights abound. It’s kind of hard to believe that Snow and friends can get away with roughing up and killing so many bad guys. But I went along with it, because shoot-outs mixed with karate moves are hard to resist.Also, the writing is lively, spiced with street wit and quotes from Bogart and the Bible. The author has a great sense of place too, so that I felt very present in his Detroit. The reign of terror by ICE in ethnic neighborhoods is vividly described.Stephen Mack Jones has a lot of raw talent, perhaps a bit undisciplined, but he’s fun to read.

Former Marine, ex-cop and self-described "rakishly handsome Blaxican," August Snow is the hero of "Lives Laid Away," in this sequel to the author's first mystery novel. When the book begins, he's received a hefty payout from a court case resulting from an incident while on duty and is staying busy perfecting his homemade salsa, taking martial arts lesson and keeping an eye on his neighbors who are being hassled by ICE. When August gets wind of an even bigger potential ongoing crime in his Michigan area home, i.e. human trafficking, after the body of an unidentified young girl dressed as Marie Antoinette washes ashore, he swings into action, along with several other assistants, including Jimmy, his young handyman and neighbor; Tomas, the brawn to his activist wife's Elena's brains; and Ogilvy, a seemingly harmless British man with a penchant for doing yoga on his front porch. August also receives help from Lucy, a Native American hacker whiz and Lady B, whose doughnut shop owner exterior is deceptively benign. With their support, he's well-equipped to take on the underworld of strip clubs, drug dealing and other sleazy doings, which provide clues to identifying who is responsible for the murders of undocumented young women. However, since this involves putting their lives in danger repeatedly, August and his crew will need to have all their wits about them to crack the case and secure justice, however imperfectly.Thoughts: The book starts off intriguingly with a main character who's hardened from his combat experience and tenure as a cop but has a not-so-hidden compassionate streak for the underdog, plus a lot of quirky interests and habits. His neighbors and friends are well-drawn and mostly sympathetic, even when they decide to take justice into their own hands (and hence break the law). However, the author does have an agenda, i.e. championing open borders, which may mar the enjoyment for readers who have an opposite position on the subject. Also, I didn't personally care for the overdone brutality; it seemed like almost every encounter with the bad guys ended with a bullet or an impromptu amputation of a digit.Overall, this is an absorbing mystery, if you have a strong stomach for violence.
