A Literary Hub Most Anticipated Book of 2019A CrimeReads Most Anticipated Crime & Mystery Novel of 2019A BookBub Most Anticipated Mystery Novel of 2019Praise for Lives Laid Away"August Octavio Snow is a big Detroit booster . . . Stephen Mack Jones picks up his gung-ho protagonist where the author left him in his first novel, August Snow—cleaning up his beat-up neighborhood in Mexicantown."   —The New York Times Book Review "Jones’s action-packed book has echoes of Raymond Chandler’s banter and bursts of Dashiell Hammett’s violence, with a tip of the porkpie hat to Walter Mosley. What’s more, Lives Laid Away delivers a bracing amount of rough humor and a whole lot of heart." —Tom Nolan, The Wall Street Journal  "A terrific story . . . The setup allows Jones to deliver some stinging observations about our current immigration policies, leavening his heavy themes with a judicious amount of dry humor." —Adam Woog, The Seattle Times "Packed with local color and references, this book will have you on the edge of your seat. It’s an action-packed mystery novel that is both familiar and surprising."  —Detroit Free Press "Jones proves he’s just at home writing crime fiction in Detroit as Loren D. Estleman and the late Elmore “Dutch” Leonard . . . Get ready for a different kind of snowstorm." —Dearborn Press & Guide "August Snow brings diversity to the genre and the stories are both gritty and clever. The Detroit setting is beautifully done. He takes a seat right alongside other great Michigan private eye writers like (Estleman) and Steve Hamilton. I’m hoping this is going to be a very long-lived series." —Robin Agnew, The Oakland Press "A clever, punchy tale set in one of today’s more romantic locales: Detroit. A city climbing back from ruin is a great backdrop for redemptive stories like this one, about a native who is renovating houses on his childhood street to try and rebuild the neighborhood he grew up in. Stephen Mack Jones is also a playwright and a poet, which means he knows how to make every word count . . . Heart and muscle aplenty." —The Raleigh News & Observer"August Snow combines strength, vulnerability, and resolve — all necessary to the construction of a hero. Snow’s sense of honor is a liability in certain parts of Detroit — as it is most places — but the thought of abandoning it is never on the table. Razor-sharp characterization, an engaging style, and Jones’s intimate knowledge of Motor City culture give us hope for an enduring series and many years of entertainment."  —Loren D. Estleman, author of the Amos Walker novels "An old-fashioned, guns a-blazing ripsnorter—and boy, are its pulp roots showing." —Mystery Scene Magazine "This is noir as it was meant to be: incisive, socially conscious, distinctly situated, and told with real style."   —Literary Hub "Detective fiction needs a shot in the arm every now and again. That was the feeling of reading Stephen Mack Jones . . . The August Snow series is as promising as any crime fiction to come around in a long while, tapping into the iconoclasm and social justice streaks of midcentury noirs, but taking them in a modern direction, exposing human trafficking rings, abuses of immigrant communities, gentrification, and economic declines and revivals. It’s heady, exhilarating stuff."  —CrimeReads "Terrific." —Seattle Review of Books "A giddy, heart-stopping read whose distinctive, vibrant characters come at you full throttle, no holds barred . . . A toast to Stephen Mack Jones, one of the coolest crime writers on the current scene." —Irma Heldman, Open Letters    "It's hard to believe this is only the second mystery from [Jones]—with a well tangled plot, excellent pacing, and the deft mixture of toughness and generosity in his protagonist, August Snow, this is a terrific new book and a great series."—Kingdom Books "Superior . . . August Snow is an uncompromising crusader with a sense of humor reminiscent of Robert Parker's Spenser. He merits a long literary life." —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review"Hard-driving noir, with a strong dose of neighborhood camaraderie; for read-alike comparisons, think Easy Rawlins and his close-knit L.A. neighborhood meet Jack Reacher." —Booklist "Operatically violent and hilariously funny, with dialogue to die for. I'll read whatever Stephen Mack Jones writes." —Timothy Hallinan Praise for August SnowWinner of the 2018 Nero AwardWinner of the Hammett Prize for Crime FictionFinalist for the 2018 Shamus AwardStrand Magazine Critics Awards Best First Novel NomineeA 2018 Michigan Notable BookA Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Best Book of 2017    “August Snow is one of my favorite books that I’ve read recently, and I’m not just saying that . . . This book is so good, I actually put it down, and I briefly entertained the notion of moving back to Detroit.” —Nancy Pearl, NPR’s Morning Edition “[A] witty, mayhem-packed first novel . . . Snow’s own voice has echoes of Raymond Chandler’s. Be assured that when the showdown comes, Snow—an action-hero with the heart of a mensch—and his crew prove up to that task.”  —The Wall Street Journal “Stephen Mack Jones’s rock-solid debut, August Snow, is powered by the outgoing personality of the title hero and his deep affections for his hometown of Detroit. [Jones] proves himself a natural entertainer.”  —Chicago Tribune  “Jones, a Detroit-area poet and playwright brings the city, its environs, and its eateries to vital life in a mystery coiled around the contemporary crime du jour of cyber-finance meddling. His is that rare tale that, despite its thriller-level violence, maintains a fiercely warm heart at its core—and ends far too quickly.”  —The Boston Globe  “[A] polished, gripping debut. Poet Stephen Mack Jones’ novel bristles with energy, compassion, humor and a page-turning plot.”  —Minneapolis Star Tribune

This is the second book in the series that I have read. This author is so good. The story is so tight, the flow of the action and the characters in the event is spot-on. And at the very end I was surprised and amazed and so clear set this was a righteous in me.I am a character and relationship person. These stories are built on these factors. And I am a Detroit girl. Only left home after college. Have such great memories of that City before the big trouble. This writer brings me back to Detroit, great things I remember and the sense of its New Life in these days. The mix of crime and neighborhood and government agencies and some of the worst aspects of Michigan come together in a great story. And the writing is damn good. But maybe I said that already.

As an old Detroiter, I found Mr. Jones' descriptions of the lower West side engrossing and poignant and mostly accurate. His characters real and realistic. His treatment of the old north side and the Edison Park district are also captivatng. My wife's family loved there. He has room in whatever the rubber issue will be to spend a lot more time on the East side. My cousin who lives in GP Farms says it's still nice. We used to go to the Farms Pier to swim in the summer. My dad taught me how to swim by throwing me in the boat well. By the way, there was a Licavoli at Macchus' Red Fox with Jimmy and the Giacalone brothers. I loved both of his books. Looking forward to the third.

This is about the good people of the inner city about whom no suburbanite knows anything. It's a very well told tale.

Good for lovers of the knight, spiced with salsa, an urban renewal in literature, and yet an old fashioned private dick novel

Neo-Nazi bikers...thugs who look like they only eat glass and babies... the madam of an S&M cathouse...a priest who hides and transports undocumented immigrants...a skittish teenage girl hacker — these are some of the characters we meet in Lives Laid Away.Ex-cop August Snow is as wild and weird as any of them. Half Black and half Hispanic, he makes wonderful salsa. He’s also a dead shot and a black belt in karate — fully equipped for action. And there’s plenty in this book.Snow takes on the job of foiling a trafficking operation out of sheer goodness of heart. The victims are supposedly scooped up by ICE for deportation — but in reality, kidnapped for trafficking.Gunfights abound. It’s kind of hard to believe that Snow and friends can get away with roughing up and killing so many bad guys. But I went along with it, because shoot-outs mixed with karate moves are hard to resist. Also, the writing is lively, spiced with street wit and quotes from Bogart and the Bible. The author has a great sense of place too, so that I felt very present in his Detroit. The reign of terror by ICE in ethnic neighborhoods is vividly described.Stephen Mack Jones has a lot of raw talent, perhaps a bit undisciplined, but he’s fun to read.

Former Marine, ex-cop and self-described "rakishly handsome Blaxican," August Snow is the hero of "Lives Laid Away," in this sequel to the author's first mystery novel. When the book begins, he's received a hefty payout from a court case resulting from an incident while on duty and is staying busy perfecting his homemade salsa, taking martial arts lesson and keeping an eye on his neighbors who are being hassled by ICE. When August gets wind of an even bigger potential ongoing crime in his Michigan area home, i.e. human trafficking, after the body of an unidentified young girl dressed as Marie Antoinette washes ashore, he swings into action, along with several other assistants, including Jimmy, his young handyman and neighbor; Tomas, the brawn to his activist wife's Elena's brains; and Ogilvy, a seemingly harmless British man with a penchant for doing yoga on his front porch. August also receives help from Lucy, a Native American hacker whiz and Lady B, whose doughnut shop owner exterior is deceptively benign. With their support, he's well-equipped to take on the underworld of strip clubs, drug dealing and other sleazy doings, which provide clues to identifying who is responsible for the murders of undocumented young women. However, since this involves putting their lives in danger repeatedly, August and his crew will need to have all their wits about them to crack the case and secure justice, however imperfectly.Thoughts: The book starts off intriguingly with a main character who's hardened from his combat experience and tenure as a cop but has a not-so-hidden compassionate streak for the underdog, plus a lot of quirky interests and habits. His neighbors and friends are well-drawn and mostly sympathetic, even when they decide to take justice into their own hands (and hence break the law). However, the author does have an agenda, i.e. championing open borders, which may mar the enjoyment for readers who have an opposite position on the subject. Also, I didn't personally care for the overdone brutality; it seemed like almost every encounter with the bad guys ended with a bullet or an impromptu amputation of a digit.Overall, this is an absorbing mystery, if you have a strong stomach for violence.

Superb book in that it contains the right amount of details to help anyone in California do a fantastic job of landscaping their yards beautifully and do it a with 230 Native Plants that will deliver a lush, low-water landscape. I am a Landscape Professional and I find the authors information correct and current is just every aspect! This book is intelligence on steroids! It is cohesive information from start to finish. It has solid rationales, and it's information is arrived at not merely by opinion, but, by solid facts and strong scientific data. I have over 55 books on landscaping and I'd say this book is now in my top five. The data, the verbiage, and the accompanying photos are wonderful, great for reading and finding information.I love the discussions on plant communities and how native plants fit in to those communities. The authors mince no words and get down to business, they will teach you how to have a beautiful yard in tune with nature. They by no means want anyone to have a bare dirt garden or lawn, gravel or sand pit yard, or anything else like that of a yard!A great classic book awaits you!

I bought this for myself. I'm an experienced planter of CA natives in my own gardens and currently have an all native yard. I own the first book and used it heavily for my current garden - it echoes what I'd learned from Las Pilitas over the years in a straightforward format. This second book was a slight disappointment in that I found nothing new. Perhaps I should have expected that! However, this second book has been heavily borrowed by friends as a straightforward place to start with a CA native garden. If you are looking for help getting started, this new book is based on years of experience and Greg's practical approach. Some years ago, Greg designed and installed a high end garden for my neighbor, but was generous with his time and expertise toward my amateur efforts across the road - and still gives his time spreading the CA natives message. Greg and Lucy have 'walked the talk' and no, you won't find many garden plans, because you will be taught to look at your own land, plot, container, whatever, assess the conditions and plant accordingly. My husband and I have half an acre planted from scratch with CA natives over the last three years. We do all the work ourselves and yet still have time for other hobbies. This book (and the previous one) will set you up for success.

Great follow-up to the first book. This book describes each California native in detail and how to grow and use it. As a landscape designer in San Diego, this is a very valuable resource as well as an enjoyable read.

This volume highlights the most compatible native plants for California gardens. Lots of color pictures and outstanding advice regarding how to care for native plants. I particularly like the idea of micro-sprinklers instead of all that ugly black irrigation lines.

I love this book. I recommend it as the first book to read for those interested in converting their lawns/landscapes to drought tolerant plants/California natives. Greg and Lucy are very thorough to set the stage with the history and the biology of how the plants are connected. Then take you through the complete process of design, plants, installation, and maintenance. All of the chapters were informative, but I especially liked the chapter on design as I think placement is crucial for appeal.

Lots & lots of information. It will make it much easier for me to choose native plants for my new planter. Thank you!

35 native plants in the backyard thanks to the information in this book.

The plant it right and sections that follow make this book great for drought tolerant planting advice.

I had to play these etudes as a Percussion Major at Crane School of Music in 1980 and '81 ! I didn't nail them all, butthey were GREAT for my chops. It's fun to work on them now again.I WISH I had the time to practice all evening NOW, like I could THEN !Maybe someday this decade, God willing.Percuss on !Geoff CunninghamB.A. Music Ed., S.U.N.Y. Very Good

My daughter's percussion instructor requested she buy this. We had purchased her a wooden marimba as she prefers mallet percussion to any other. Her instructor is in professional level orchestras and is training her in techniques she will use in the youth orchestra she is in.

Good quality, arrived on time and just what I wanted...THANKS

Good, thorough content for my development as a percussionists. I originally bought it for an audition piece, and one year later, I have been working through it for my private lessons as a performance major.

Easy to use

My son's drum instructor recommended it!

Great for sight reading/beginner book to marimba!

Review

The Cruising Guide to Abaco is a wonderful help on board as well as for planning a sailing trip in the Abacos. It has all the necessary charts for approach planning and nice aerial images showing the way to anchorages. To make navigation easy there is an outstanding set of GPS waypoints you can use with the boat's plotter. An exceptional help are the charts of dive moorings and dive spots to find all the dive spots on your own not being dependent on the dive shops and their preselected dive spots schedule. I wished this guide would be regularily available in Europe as well. Amazon 2015 --Amazon.comFormat: Spiral-boundVerified PurchaseGreat guide. This cruising guide has just too many commercials and promotional material to be a good book; especially when you pay for it. If they want to have as much advertisement in this book, they may as well give it out for free and let the businesses advertising on it pay for boaters to have for free. There are less ads in your local phone book - and that is free!

The Abaco Cruising Guide is for any one who loves the Abacos not just boaters ,and Steve Dodge and sons do it right ; history , availability of restaurants , fuel, accommodations ,activities along with the routes and dangers to avoid for safe passage . As a sometime sailboat renter and recently just hanging out on island time [ we try every other year ] the Guide is invaluable tool to enhance your travels to this wonderful part of the Bahamas . We update every year and give our old copy to like minded friends .

Dodge is slightly better than Pavlidis at showing charts and pictures that explain how to get into an anchorage.... but Pavlidis has a little better verbal explanations of what to expect and what is in each anchorage to see.... so I appreciate both authors.

I have used this series for quite a few years and would not leave for the Bahamas without one. Gives all the headings and distance to mosteverywhere you would want to go in your boat. Can't imagine being without it.

This should be a standard piece of gear for anyone cruising in the Abacos. Hundreds of color photos, many aerial, of islands, inlets and marinas. The navigation charts are accurate and updated every year. There are diving and fishing charts included too, as well as street maps. There is even a yellow page section of business listings. The ads help you find goods and services before you go or while you are there. There are sections on history as well as current events, plus the current tide tables and moon phases. Tons of information in this guide.

As far as I am concerned, "The Crusing Guide to Abaco Bahamas" is a must have cruising to the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas. Mr. Dodge's GPS waypoints are tried and proven year after year. You always want the latest edition for tides and business additions and changes. Don't leave for the Abaco's without one and with a GPS this is all you will need. Of course Amazon always has the best price and you don't have to leave home to get one.

EXTREMELY helpful on our week long charter in the Abacos. We did 99% of our planning with this cruising guide and when we got there we found all the info to be up to date and relevant.

Extremely helpful for navigation because the rental boat had no gps or navigation other than a compass.

I used this book to start to learn from scratch how to programming Unix. This book is self-contained,concise and easy to read. FYI, it is very readable and not dry. There's a number of good diagrams, for example, illustrating file descriptors allocations and the effects of system calls like dup2, etc. The authors uses short code snipplet to illustrate how to use a particular system calls, which I think is rather neat. A number of "projects" very quickly help reader to expand their skill level. Of interest is also a project on distributed "Richard" and "Linda" , the forerunner of Sun's JINI. The authors could have expanded this book another 100 pages and make it a companion to Steven's "Advanced Unix System Programming". I strongly recommend this book to beginners, intermediate Unix Programmers.

This is an awesome book. You'll have to be patient when going through it. And you'll learn a lot if you follow along with the examples and make everything work. It took me probably 6 hours just to get through chapter 2 - not because I can't read, but because I'm paying attention to every little detail, and making sure I learn what's going on.The other thing that came as a big surprise, was that this is the best introduction to C i've come across. I've read quite a few books on C. Generally, I get through these other books on C - I get the syntax and pointers, and headers, etc. What I can never get through in these other C books, is that they use Math for all the examples. Which bores me, and sometimes frustrates me - because what I want to do with systems programming is not math - that's just me.Of all the C books I've read, this one, and "C - A Reference Manual 5th Edition" are the best C books. One pitfall in the book, is that with most of the examples, the conditionals to check pointers, and some other conditionals are somewhat amateur looking (that's just me). For example, in chapter 2, the "listlib.c" file has tons of conditionals like this:list_t **newptrs;if(headptr == NULL){ errno = EINVAL; return -1;}That started to confuse me, why not just write:list_t **newptrs;if(!headptr){ errno = EINVAL; return -1;}Which is ok. So there are many times where it seems the author is either purposefully writing conditionals to be verbose for readers, or doesn't know how to simplify with "not" flips.Another example:if(ptr != NULL)can be simplified to:if(ptr)Other than those small things, this book is great.EDIT: One other thing that's slightly annoying. The authors like to put all of their code in conditionals. Like this:if ((sigemptyset(&twosigs) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGINT) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGQUIT) == -1)) perror("Failed to set up signal mask");For me that's ok in only a few places. They do it everywhere and it's really annoying. Maybe they did it just to save space in the book?

its a texbook

Fantastic book with great code examples and exercises. The discussion and examples escalate very quickly so much prior knowledge is recommended. I would recommend it to anyone that is wanting to learn about UNIX.

This is an invaluable reference to keep close at hand if you are a programmer supporting UNIX. The only thing I didn't find in this text is how to change your process name on-the-fly. Everything else I've looked for was there, and in most cases, described in detail. If you do systems programming on UNIX then you should have this book.

Lots of useful sample programs

If Stevens is the Old Testament this book is the New Testament.I was thinking lately what it is about Stevens books that has made them the best material in the industry for the past decade. I cant really nail it, if I could I would have been an author myself and make millions, but the other day it suddenly hit me: When I read Stevens books sometimes a question arises and then I pause to think about it, only to turn the page and find the answer witinf for me. It is about being comprehensive, it is about covering all aspects of the topic, thinking forward on behalf of the reader, thinking what the reader may not understand and how to make it clear.Well Robbins and Robbins belongs to this category of books.I am a book maniac and I have most of the Unix/Linux programming books out there. This is by far the best systems programming book available. The other day I had to look up about asynchronous i/o in Linux and its interaction with POSIX real time signals. Opened the book, read the example, downladed the source code, in an hour I was flying and writing an asynchronous web server in Linux. For the networking stuff I never bothered to read the relevant chapters of the book since Stevens Network programming is the book I was trained by and it is still relevant. For my threading needs I used to use Butenhof's "Programming with POSIX threads", but this book has great examples and I learned a lot by browsing it. I mean I had a question about signal interaction with threads and the book had a section about it. Come on, it has saved my butt many many times. It is very comprehensive.I wholeheartedly recomend it to any serious systems programer, beginner or advanced.

I hate Terry Pratchett.I get home from a hard day at work, I cook dinner, I eat dinner, I wash up, and then sit down to some TV. In a short time, I'm so sick of commercials I turn off the TV and begin reading. The problem is that I start reading and then the next thing I know it's 5am, and I've got to get up in an hour, so I think, "might as well keep reading for another hour." Then I look up again and it's 10:30, I haven't slept and I'm 4 hours late for work, so I call in sick and finish the book. The absolute worst part, even when I'm finished with the book, I'm so anxious to read more Pratchett that I am compelled to run to the bookstore and get the next one.So, basically, Pratchett sucks because I'm out of sick days.

This entry in Terry Pratchetts wonderful Discworld series concerns the disruption caused when the magical fantasy world discovers the pros and cons of daily newspapers. Many old friends appear, including Gaspode the Talking Dog and Captain Carrot of the City Watch. We are also introduced to several new characters, including a reformed vampire (hes taken the pledge not to drink human blood) and Discworld's first gossip columnist.Pratchett, as always, manages to be funny and touching, wildly inventive, and pointedly analytical, all at the same time.

This is one of my favorites in the Discworld books. As someone who does a lot of writing I can so get into and enjoy the mind of William de Worde, but there are also so many fascinating characters either added or fleshed out in this book. Imagine a vampire photographer who uses flash photography! Pin and Tulip are -ing hilarous (you have to read the book to understand the -ing reference) and worth the time the book takes even if nothing more were to happen in the story. The Truth gives you time to visit with the Archchancellor of Unseen Univerity, the Bursar, Vetinari, CMOT Dibbler, Cheery Littlebottom, Vimes, Captain Carrot, Angua, Igor, and Mr. Slant so you aren't ignoring your favorite characters even while you learn about the life of a mild-mannered newsletter writer like William. Anyone who didn't grow up to be what their father planned for them to be will relate to William and find themselves cheering for him to succeed. I highly recommend this book. We took it along on a road trip and everyone who listened as it was read aloud has been demanding a chance to read the book for themselves, too.

I recommend this as a starter for anyone interested in The Discworld books. Its a good stand alone that has many of the series main characters in side roles. It gives a good sense of the intelligence and humor of Pratchett's work. Its not my favorite of the series but a good point to go anywhere from.

It's important to note that in the Discworld, newspapers have never existed. The engravers guild, in order to preserve their monopoly on printing, preventing anyone from using a mechanical press. That is until a group of dwarfs arrive from the mountains yearning to make money by printing.Along comes young William de Worde, a prodigal aristocrat whose broken from his wealthy father to make it on his own. When William visits the printing shop, he finds himself plunged into the new world of journalism. Together with a proper young lady named Sacharissa, they set out to create the Disc's first newspaper called the Times. As luck would have it, just as they're starting out, a huge story breaks. The metropolis of Ankh-Morpork's leader, The Patrician, is accused of stabbing his clerk with a knife and then trying to flee the city with embezzled funds. The City Watch is baffled by the case, but William soon finds a "man" on the inside, the mysterious Deep Bone. Aided by Sacharissa, the dwarfs, and a vampire photographer (on the wagon, meaning he only drinks animal blood) who turns to dust if he uses flash photography, William is determined to get to the bottom of things. But the truth isn't always so easy to set free, especially when hired goons are trying to kill you. This was a good addition to the series, but it could have been better. When I first read the description, I thought for sure there'd be some Citizen Kane references in there. I was expecting William to be one of those larger-than-life type characters like Charlie Kane and his real world counterpart William Randolph Hearst. That never materialized, which is disappointing. Instead William is an earnest young man in search of The Truth, which is OK too, but don't we all like more grandiose characters? There are some good insights into what makes the news, especially in the comparison between the Times and its rival The Inquirer--which despite its name is more based on Weekly World News. As the Deep Bone indicates there are references to Watergate and also the hired goons Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip are based on the killers in Pulp Fiction, as evidenced by the line, "Do you know what they call a sausage-inna-bun in Klatch?"On a side note, this story probably was the template for the later Going Postal, the first in the series I read. That involved the creation--resurrection really--of the post office in a similar fashion. Though the central character of that one, Moist von Lipwig, was more interesting. Conmen are just more exciting than conflicted aristocrats. And that's all the news fit to print.
