I hate Terry Pratchett.I get home from a hard day at work, I cook dinner, I eat dinner, I wash up, and then sit down to some TV. In a short time, I'm so sick of commercials I turn off the TV and begin reading.The problem is that I start reading and then the next thing I know it's 5am, and I've got to get up in an hour, so I think, "might as well keep reading for another hour." Then I look up again and it's 10:30, I haven't slept and I'm 4 hours late for work, so I call in sick and finish the book.The absolute worst part, even when I'm finished with the book, I'm so anxious to read more Pratchett that I am compelled to run to the bookstore and get the next one.So, basically, Pratchett sucks because I'm out of sick days.

This entry in Terry Pratchetts wonderful Discworld series concerns the disruption caused when the magical fantasy world discovers the pros and cons of daily newspapers. Many old friends appear, including Gaspode the Talking Dog and Captain Carrot of the City Watch. We are also introduced to several new characters, including a reformed vampire (hes taken the pledge not to drink human blood) and Discworld's first gossip columnist.Pratchett, as always, manages to be funny and touching, wildly inventive, and pointedly analytical, all at the same time.

This is one of my favorites in the Discworld books. As someone who does a lot of writing I can so get into and enjoy the mind of William de Worde, but there are also so many fascinating characters either added or fleshed out in this book. Imagine a vampire photographer who uses flash photography! Pin and Tulip are -ing hilarous (you have to read the book to understand the -ing reference) and worth the time the book takes even if nothing more were to happen in the story. The Truth gives you time to visit with the Archchancellor of Unseen Univerity, the Bursar, Vetinari, CMOT Dibbler, Cheery Littlebottom, Vimes, Captain Carrot, Angua, Igor, and Mr. Slant so you aren't ignoring your favorite characters even while you learn about the life of a mild-mannered newsletter writer like William. Anyone who didn't grow up to be what their father planned for them to be will relate to William and find themselves cheering for him to succeed. I highly recommend this book. We took it along on a road trip and everyone who listened as it was read aloud has been demanding a chance to read the book for themselves, too.

I recommend this as a starter for anyone interested in The Discworld books. Its a good stand alone that has many of the series main characters in side roles. It gives a good sense of the intelligence and humor of Pratchett's work. Its not my favorite of the series but a good point to go anywhere from.

It's important to note that in the Discworld, newspapers have never existed. The engravers guild, in order to preserve their monopoly on printing, preventing anyone from using a mechanical press. That is until a group of dwarfs arrive from the mountains yearning to make money by printing.Along comes young William de Worde, a prodigal aristocrat whose broken from his wealthy father to make it on his own. When William visits the printing shop, he finds himself plunged into the new world of journalism. Together with a proper young lady named Sacharissa, they set out to create the Disc's first newspaper called the Times.As luck would have it, just as they're starting out, a huge story breaks. The metropolis of Ankh-Morpork's leader, The Patrician, is accused of stabbing his clerk with a knife and then trying to flee the city with embezzled funds. The City Watch is baffled by the case, but William soon finds a "man" on the inside, the mysterious Deep Bone. Aided by Sacharissa, the dwarfs, and a vampire photographer (on the wagon, meaning he only drinks animal blood) who turns to dust if he uses flash photography, William is determined to get to the bottom of things. But the truth isn't always so easy to set free, especially when hired goons are trying to kill you.This was a good addition to the series, but it could have been better. When I first read the description, I thought for sure there'd be some Citizen Kane references in there. I was expecting William to be one of those larger-than-life type characters like Charlie Kane and his real world counterpart William Randolph Hearst. That never materialized, which is disappointing. Instead William is an earnest young man in search of The Truth, which is OK too, but don't we all like more grandiose characters?There are some good insights into what makes the news, especially in the comparison between the Times and its rival The Inquirer--which despite its name is more based on Weekly World News. As the Deep Bone indicates there are references to Watergate and also the hired goons Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip are based on the killers in Pulp Fiction, as evidenced by the line, "Do you know what they call a sausage-inna-bun in Klatch?"On a side note, this story probably was the template for the later Going Postal, the first in the series I read. That involved the creation--resurrection really--of the post office in a similar fashion. Though the central character of that one, Moist von Lipwig, was more interesting. Conmen are just more exciting than conflicted aristocrats.And that's all the news fit to print.

A purchase as a gift for an enterprising young person, they really got a kick out of some of the ideas presented in this book. Her only complaint was some of the projects were really simplistic and she was above their experience level.

We were lucky enough to meet Sophie at Maker Faire in San Mateo, my daughter was completely enamored and was able to make a duct tape project. We ordered the book on our return and she is now hooked! The instructions are easy to follow and achievable, it is full of great projects for starters and up.

Sophie is full of creativity and so is this book. A great way to get everyone involved and keep the creativity flowing!

My grandson has a passion for making projects out of duct tape. I sent this along with the duct tape for some new ideas for a Christmas present.

This is a gift, but it looks like it has very manageable projects for someone over the age of 9 who enjoys creating things.

Most everything in this book you can find on her YouTube channel. Also, the kindle edition is unreadable. If it weren't for my iPad, I wouldn't even be able to read it.

Shipped super quick. Very extensive and the color is a great touch. A must buy for those into duct tape crafts. And the designs are easily adaptable to your own style.

I have to admit this is one of the best books I have read in a long time! Not only because my best friend for 75 years happens to live on Olive St., in Fair Oaks, Ca (who could have guessed)! The books revolved around the lives of four friends who gathered weekly at the house on Olive St,, they range in age from mid 20's to mid 60's - what a generation gap! But that gap is combined with a whole lot of living! The characters show a depth beyond what we usually find. I love the housewife whose husband and kids are slobs (can so relate to her!!) and all the other characters. We find kindred spirits in all of them. I have recommended this book so many times - to book clubs and friends alike. It is great! Human! Loving! Giving! Super! And I certainly recommended it to my best friend since birth who now happens to live on Olive St, In Fair Oaks, CA!

This is the first book by Robyn Carr that I read. I absolutely love this book. Four very different women brought together by writing. They all have different issues. They are brought together one summer after their dear friend Gabby dies. Elly is given the task of going through Gabby's writings and photographs so she moves into Gabby's house on Olive Street. One by one the other women join her as their lives implode in different ways. This is the story of how they learn who they really are and what they are worth as women. It's a beautiful story of friendship.

This is a stand alone read. Although I read about two books a day of various types, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, literary and political criticism etc. I review very, very few books because it takes time I could be reading or doing other things and my day is very full. I'm not a book snob. I like a good, well written hearty book that makes me care and feel something about the place and the characters in it. I love series like that. Robyn Carr is a master of this genre. This book, while a stand alone, made me wonder at first whether I was going to regret my reading journey but I knew the author and trusted her. Good call. The journey is well worth it and when I finished the book I felt as if I had shared something special. If you have not read Robyn Carr before don't start with this one but save it for later when you have developed that trust that she won't let you down. The book begins with a tragedy and continues with the positive impact of that tragedy on the lives of a group of friends as they work together through their grief. The strength of the deceased and her love impacts them all in unexpected ways. This is not a formula read and I think it will be less appealing for some because of that but it is really a lovely book.

The plot sounded interesting but I quickly deleted it from my Kindle library because I didn't care for the domestic violence of one couple or the foul language of one family. Sorry, I don't even remember -- or care to remember -- their names. Not my style. There's enough such behavior in the world but I don't need to invite it into my life and home. I sometimes share my Kindle/iPad with my grandchildren and certainly wouldn't want them reading it -- or even thinking that I read it.

One of the most inspiring and fascinating books I've read in a long time. A small group of close friends, all professional writers, some successful but others not so much, must deal with the loss of the dearest member of their group who dies suddenly and unexpectedly. The rest of them rally around to sort out their friend's unfinished writings and estate, and in the process find their personal lives changing very differently to what they had expected or planned. Any woman who has had friends who are closer than blood-sisters will relate to and be touched by this story. Highly recommended.

I want to live in this house with these women! This story goes beyond a simple work of fiction. It's an empathetic, sympathetic, life-worn, pull-it-out-of-the-closet masterpiece. I read this book because I love Robyn Carr's writing, and because it's been sitting in my Kindle collecting dust and making me feel guilty for leaving it there unread. And now, having read it? I'm kicking myself for taking so long. So many of life's trials and accomplishments, sorrows and joys shouldn't be allowed in one book. Robyn Carr took four characters through the wringer and brought them out whole on the other side, leaving so many instructions for those of us not living our lives to the fullest. Sound maudlin? Not in Ms. Carr's capable hands. Go along with these women. Cry with them, laugh with them, love life with them. You won't be disappointed in this book.

Five writers from very different backgrounds and of different ages have bonded and created a writers circle. Unfortunately, Gabby, the one who really kept them all together and whose house was used as a sort of club house, has just passed away. But she tasks the girls with one more project; put together her papers and manuscripts. This leads to a summer of discovery for each of the four women and brings them to places they never saw themselves going.This is a great novel of how friendships help to clarify things that you can't figure out for yourself. Each woman has her own strengths, which she lends to the others to help them discover what it is they need to do to be truly happy. The best part is not only are the four main characters well written and lovable, but the side characters are also extremely interesting and have dimensions to them. So you end up in a world full of zany and funny people just waiting for you to get to know them.This is a great feel-good novel. Nothing complicated, just an easy fun beach read.

This is the second book I've read by Carr, and I really enjoyed it.This is a good book. It's about the relationship between five now four completely different women with totally different lives who all just happen to be writers of various genres. A highly entertaining book book, with complex characters, and an intricate, layered plot. I recommend it to the reading community. I plan to read more of Carr's books. Check it out.

Have had the previous edition for many years and it is the mainstay of safe practice used in my labs for many years. The new edition does not disappoint and now resides alongside it older sibling on my workplace bookshelf. I recommend this to any person working in a laboratory environment using hazardous materials.

Lauren earned her MFA in Fiction Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has been awarded Fellowships from the Middlebury Fellowship in Environmental Journalism, the 11th Hour Food and Farming Journalism Fellowship, the Mesa Refuge, and the Rotary Foundation. This offers excellent and accurate insight into why people immigrate from Central America, what it takes to make it to the US, and what life is like once here. By using the true story of twin brothers, the author conveys the human realities of undocumented immigration. At the same time, she portrays the twins very honestly, not as saints but as young people who are stronger than most in many ways, but with flaws and immaturities that are common in most young people. They may take different expressions than they would in American born youth because of different and very difficult circumstances. But as I read this book, I became less judgmental about their behaviors and choices. These were kids taking on more than I have ever had to take on.I used the word thorough in my title. The author uses data and facts very well to portray who immigrants are and to explain immigration laws, agencies, and processes. I am somewhat knowledgeable about those topics, and I was impressed. I am going to recommend the book to friends who want to learn more about the technical as well as the human aspects of immigration. She was fair and balanced in her treatment of this topic.The book is well written. It’s is a good story that could make a good movie or series. A good read that is a learning experience as well.

Markham's book seamlessly weaves together the story of one family while telling a much broader story about illegal immigration from Central America. I found myself immersed in the characters and story and had to remind myself multiple times that I was reading non-fiction. While heart-wrenching, it's also enjoyable and educational. Highly recommend!

For those of us who live in comfortable surroundings in well-ordered towns such as Berkeley, the day-to-day realities of life as experienced by undocumented migrants may be impossible to understand. Most of what we know comes from news reports and occasional exposés about the efforts of the Trump Administration to expel what Right-Wing politicians have insisted we call "illegal immigrants." In The Far Away Brothers, Berkeley journalist Lauren Markham brings the lived experience of two young Salvadoran migrants and their family under a spotlight. The picture she paints is nuanced and moving as well as sobering.Identical twins Ernesto and Raúl Flores were seventeen years of age when, separately, they crossed the Rio Grande into Texas with the help of coyotes. Though in so many ways their experience is unique, they also stand in for the tens of thousands of young Central Americans who flooded across our southern borders earlier in this decade—and for many of the millions of Salvadorans, Hondurans, and Guatemalans who now reside in the United States. Nearly all recent refugees from Central America were driven north by the gang violence and official corruption that are now endemic in the region. However, as Markham makes clear, economic motives also loomed large. Abject poverty conjures up visions of prosperity in "El Norte" among many Central Americans, as it does in many other people around the world.As I read about the often horrific circumstances that confronted the Flores brothers over the three-year span described in the book, I couldn't help but think about the sharply contrasting experience of my father's parents, who emigrated from Russia early in the 20th century. Their lives in the shtetl where they had lived, plagued by repeated pogroms, were at least as difficult as those of the Flores twins in El Salvador. Also, it was no easy feat for them to make their way through the vastness of the European continent and then across the Atlantic in steerage. But the welcome they received at Ellis Island, though decidedly chilly, was in no way comparable to the repeated violence and official hostility that met the Flores brothers both on their way and after their arrival.As the author makes clear, the massive migration of young Central Americans to the United States is, in a large sense, the consequence of US policy in the region throughout the 20th century, but especially in the 1980s. In El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala alike, our government actively supported local efforts to stamp out local insurgents in the name of anti-Communism—murdering tens of thousands of peasants in the process. Large numbers of young men fled to the US to escape that violence. Many succumbed to the lure of crime and were imprisoned in California. There, in prison and on the streets of Los Angeles, the most violent gangs that victimize Central America today were formed (Mara Salvatrucha, or MS13, and Barrio 18). Today, these gangs are enormous, multinational criminal enterprises. They're responsible for an outsized body count in our cities and a major share of drug trafficking in the US today. In a real sense, then, we're paying the price of our government's intervention in Central America in the last century. And so are tens of thousands of migrants from the region.The Far Away Brothers is Lauren Markham's first book, but the Berkeley author and journalist has been writing fiction, essays, and journalism for several years. Riveting story that portrays one family being torn apart by violence and our inhumane U.S. immigration policies. It's also a beautifully told coming of age story for these brothers who have normal adolescent struggles on top of being unaccompanied minors. High recommended!

This was a great book.. Especially for our book group here in immigration rich California.. Amazingly for non fiction, (it had me in the edge of my seat hoping all would turn out well. Love this entire series! It's great to read a christian book that has a good story behind it. You get to experience everything through the eyes of a teenage girl and the ups and downs of life and finding love.

I read these books as a teen, and have now purchased the new omnibus set for one of my students. Christy Miller is an average American teen girl, and these books tell the story of the development of her identity as she explores her faith, relationships, and what it means to be a woman. Books 4-6 are some of the most fun, as the characters get fleshed out and the romantic tension between Christy and Todd escalates. The books are certainly Christian-focused, but they leave a lot of room for discussion of tough issues. I strongly recommend these for middle school girls who want to read about romance but aren't ready for the sometimes graphic world of YA.

I'm a thirty something lady but God is really speaking to me thru the development of the Christy character beginning with the age 14. God bless you Robin; so cool to see God move thru the gifts of People.

Great book for teen girls. Christy's struggles are common to many girls and her attempts to respond in godly manner (though she fails at times) will be an encouragement to young readers.

Although I am an adult, I've enjoyed all the Christy Miller stories. Christy is the sort of person I would have loved to have had for a friend during high school, and I think many girls can relate to her. The pacing of the stories is sometimes a little slow, and the supporting characters, especially Christy's parents, should have been much better developed. Still, the stories are so enjoyable they are well worth reading.

Gift for a young lady that helped us serve dinner every Wednesday night at our church's Family Night.

I'm not a teenager but I am young at heart and I highly recommend this series!You just fall in love with the main character Christy and you hope that your daughter or grand daughter might "live" like Christy with her values.

Robin Jones Gunn is my favorite author. The Christy Miller series is "must read" literature for all teenaged girls and their moms. I just wish I could have had this resource when my girls were teenagers!
